Title: Wow, Nintendo this is ridiculous....
Post by: kraken613 on July 28, 2009, 03:58:38 PM
So I was sitting in my room and just had opened Wii Sports Resort, then I went to put the box with the my other boxes on the shelf and I went "Holy Crap!".

Look at this!

That's pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Just think how much energy and space is wasted shipping these games. I don't have a single 360 game that came in a huge box.

*waits for someone to bring up one of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games.*

Seriously, those boxes are huge because of the peripherals.  Nothing new there.

I hope you realize that the games you mentioned are peripheral based games that include the peripheral. In some cases it is required to include it since the game won't work without it (like Wii Fit). Not to mention that some of these games are sold with just the game, rendering the argument obsolete.

If these huge packages were to just house the game then yeah it would be ridiculous. But like brood said many peripheral games come in big packagaes because they need to SAFELY secure all parts.

I do have single 360 game that's huge, it was Rock Band. One time purchase of a huge box then you just buy the game though.

Just the amount that Nintendo puts out though.

Dude, you are just arguing for the same of arguing now. Like I already explained these games come with peripherals which need to be housed in a big box so both the game and the unit are housed safely, especially when shipping overseas. Also, both Animal Crossing and Tiger Woods are sold in stand alone versions, meaning that it was your choice whether to buy the game with the peripheral or not.
Title: Re: Wow, Nintendo this is ridiculous....
Post by: BwrJim! on July 28, 2009, 04:16:04 PM
actually the point was that these were all peripheral games, so my point is valid.   See, that is one of the points of showing just those games.. Unlike others like say The Conduit, Zelda TP and so on, they all carry a peripheral.

So yeah, its valid for what I am saying..

Im not trying to argue, I was just saying its crazy how many peripherals they have.

Indeed, it is crazy.  But as long as the casuals need a plastic doodad for every new experience they come across we'll keep getting them.  Hell, on the rare occasion there's actually a game that I want that uses or needs a peripheral, it is nice to get them both at once for usually a cheaper price.  I look forward to mocking the 1 ft.^2 box that'll have the Wii Vitality Sensor packed in with Wii 'X'.

And by the way, I can understand keeping the box for Wii Fit since you can always pack the board away in it, but why are you keeping these boxes anyway?  I just use the ol' ziploc bag to hold all my other random accessories, and then I just trash the box.  If I kept every game box I ever got in my gaming career, I'd have to clear out a whole closet for all the trash bags containing random game boxes I'd collected over the years (it's bad enough I still have one for all my PC and N64 game boxes).  Just pull the peripheral out, store it in something safe, and then trash the box.  Most of these boxes just contain the peripheral and a sealed game case anyway.  Problem largely solved.

i actually was able to sell my n64 boxes only on ebay for like 10-15 a piece.   anyone remember when nintendo said they were done making accessories with the motion plus.. oh wait the vitality sensor!  it could really work well, but they need to turn it into a strap that doesnt interfear with gameplay.

Realistically you could pull off the same sort of thing with SNES boxes.  Put the boxes for the Super Scope, Mario Paint, Lethal Enforcers and Earthbound and you'll have the same thing.

These boxes are pretty much the smallest they could possibly be considering what comes in them.  I think the whole thing is perfectly reasonable.  Boxes have to exceed the size of what goes in them.  Simple physics really.

Not necessarily. I've seen shops just put out the appropriate amount of DVD cases out for the stock they have.

Housing a peripheral doesn't make it necessary. Wii Speak and Motion+ both could have been bundled without the extra cardboard.

How to they get bundled since they can't fit in the DVD case?  Would you rather they use a plastic blisterpack?  Cardboard is biodegradable, recyclable and actually LITERALLY grows on trees.  There is pretty much no such a thing as a "waste of cardboard".

Hey, if it makes you feel better I have a special bin set aside to hold LE/SE/CE boxes, since those tend to have pretty artwork on them or are special containers in themselves like the Fallout 3 lunchbox.   ;)

Those usually aren't worth much since most people tend to keep them. If you decide to rid yourself of your Nintendo 64 boxes, don't trash them, SELL them!

Hmm...never knew there was a market for empty boxes.  Fine, whatever.  I suppose I understand where you're coming from on that, considering I have a similar attitude about books (I can't bring myself to deface a book, even something as simple as ripping a coupon out of a magazine).  I had actually saved those boxes to use to store and ship the games should I ever want to sell or give the games away.  I'm more than a bit of pack rat, but I try to draw the line when it just becomes impractical to keep up with it all.  After all, my apartment's only so big.

Recently? They stopped using the huge cardboard boxes a long time ago. Well, outside of the Pyramid, that one gives games huge boxes that never had any in first place. It's how I got a huge Bioshock box.

Would you rather they use a plastic blisterpack?

I call 'em hellpacks and absolutely despise Sony for using them.

Obviously you've never seen the original Bioshock PC box, which like a lot of PC boxes is probably at least 1.5 x bigger than it needs to be.

They went to the smaller cardboard after the huge ones. Now most are in DVD cases. Its been more than a year since I bought a PC game at a store, plus stores buy me are getting pathetic PC selections anyways.

It was just a DVD case here IIRC, the collector's edition was larger of course but it also included that figure.

The "DVD case" version came later (which coincidentally was the same version used for the actual disc case in the Collector's Edition, but the original PC release was one of those big clunky PC boxes with just the game in a paper sleeve and some instructions.  I should know...over the course of my time with Bioshock I've actually bought the game 3 times (original PC, CE PC, PS3).

I still have my Earthbound box with game.  I'm not sure what I did with the strategy guide though.  If Nintendo ever appeases us and puts it on the VC, I may actually think about selling the game.

I got mine from NCSX, but I preordered them months ago. They just came out so it may take some time to restock. The Classic Pro is great, it feels just like a GameCube controller with the face of a Classic Controller. Get the black one if you can, even though they can get smudged a bit like a black DS Lite they really look great.

Yeah, in Europe, they always came in cardboard boxes but not in the US.

thats because in the US a lot of the teens and young adults steal from one retailer and sell them to the local retailers..  these individuals have been given a name of "Street Vendors"

A lot of youth is really really good, but the bad ones clump up and just ruin it for everyone.   I like the look of the blister packs, i just wish you didnt have to fight to get the product you purchased.

I bought those $10 "seen on TV" clippers to deal with blister packs and packages.

I also I don't like the name "blister packs," it hints to me it's going to explode with puss all over the product.

I've always considered it "people proof" packaging since no one can ever seem to open it without trouble.

The exposed edges of sheared plastic are also pretty dangerous.

I have witnessed cuts & stabbings at the mercy of "people proof" packaging.

I have EXPERIENCED cuts & stabbings at the mercy of "people proof" packagine. You cut the damn thing enough where you think your hand can fit in and slide the product out but what happens every time? You lose your grip, the plastic snaps closed on your hands and you scrape skin off trying to get your hand out.

Luckily i grew out of being an impatient kid and always carry around a box cutter.

Those packages SUCK, especially if you don't have any utensils near by. I don't even dare try to open it unless I have a pair of scissors or a knife.
Title: Re: Wow, Nintendo this is ridiculous....
Post by: EasyCure on August 04, 2009, 04:33:27 PM
Well there are some that look like your standard blister packaging but actually *gasp* snap open! Those are the best, but obviously not very secure.. thus we're stuck with blister packaging for most of the pricier products.

Like i said, I always have a box cutter with me. There's a small thing blade in my wallet, i keep one in the car, and there's at least 2 in my bedroom. Makes opening Wii Points cards has never been sooo easy :)

They come in hell packs in the US? Over here they're in folded cardboard sleeves (used to come in proper Wii DVD cases but I guess those were too bulky and reusable).

Over the past few years though, since the wii launch companies have been told to come up with a better solution as the blister packs are not eco friendly.   I think thats what started to spawn the newer styles that are easier to open as well.

Yep yep. Though the part where the actual card is placed is a small bubble, so it makes it easy to make just one cut and then slide the card out without damaging your fingers lol

You also can't save the plastic packs for collection purposes. No more lining shelves with boxes...
