Title: Google Wave
Post by: Caliban on July 22, 2009, 06:28:39 PM
http://wave.google.com/

I just watched the 1h20m presentation for this API from Google. I'm starting to think they're the Borg because they seem to be making apps to assimilate everyone.

This API is just crazy though. I'm not even going to give too much details, watch the whole presentation, but I can really see this being implemented into Nintendo World Report, and I can see the number of readers, and forum users increase if such API was used.

I saw this a while back and I could never bring myself to actually watch it all. I, however, have seen some of the features and I'm intrigued.

I'm also really hyped about there new OS coming out in the fall.

Yeah, I'm also interested to see what will be the outcome of their OS.

Could google wave be the reason why google talk has been all but abandoned since they released it?

I'd assume so.

I do plan on integrating the Google and Facebook APIs to NWR eventually.

With the constant use of the name Google, something funny i recently heard came to mind, and i have no choice but to post it here now.

That and I wouldn't know where else to post it!

"Hey baby, wanna come to myspace so i can twitter your yahoo 'til you google all over my facebook? ;)"

google wave is basically a cross between forums/e-mail/ and chat

basically its like e-mail because you can sort through conversations as if they were mail

its like a forum because you can have ongoing coversations on organized subjects in a public manner

and its like chat because you can do it in real time

basically its like having a saved aim/msn conversation, but you can keep it in your mailbox, and you can add to it in real time, and so can anyone else who was in the conversation.

also it has a crapload of other cool features. One of the key benefits to the way it is set-up is the collaborative aspects. Like for instance I want to write a screeplay with one of my buddies, so if we wanted to we could bounce back dialog as if we were characters in an improve and save different plot points as chapters or story arcs. We can sort of do this in a regular chat client, but only one of us would have access to the conversation in the end, or if we both saved it we would have to combine them together later.

I applied on Google's page but haven't heard squat yet.

Aaron, have you tried it?  My plan was to use it for staff meetings, but it sounds like it'll have wide-ranging public applications as well.

Does it force your real name on the screen or does just a nickname/handle/username show up for you guys?
Title: Re: Google Wave
Post by: Stratos on October 27, 2009, 10:47:18 PM
It has my real name, but I gave it my real name when I signed up for Google in the first place years ago.

I got the invite and tried it out. Pretty neat. Probably the best place for Maxi and I to collaborate on mafia games.

A couple of issues so far without having really experienced what Google Wave is beyond a realtime chat. I know that it is only in Preview status (aka beta), but if I knew where to submit feedback this is what I would send in;

1) Display name. I want an easy way to decide what my display name is and if possible, a way to choose the display name based on who is looking at it.
i.e. If I'm talking to one of you, I want to use my forum name, if I'm talking to maybe a friend from school days, then maybe I want to display my real name.

2) Inserting Text. I guess inserting text anywhere into the conversation is a good idea on paper, but the conversation moves on in real time. How am I supposed to know if someone new joins the conversation and decides to comment directly to something said off screen? This also leads to a very jumbled converstation that can be a littel hard to follow if you were to read it later.

3) Alert Sounds. It is a completely silent program at this stage. The only way you know someone replied is to physically check and see. It would be nice to not only have an alert sound, but maybe be able to assign a certain sound to certain people or certain sounds to different conversations(waves).

Anyone else have any other feedback so far?

its buggy too, the last convo we had i cant even look at...it just displays blank

also i found out you can display more than one wave at once, which could be pretty nifty

It would be great for staff meetings, and probably for general purpose stuff, like our editing process, e-mail chat threads, etc.  But without the ability to have anybody you want on it right now, it's pretty much useless.

I found out that the middle section "inbox" numbers how many unread messages there are in each conversation for you and if you click on the number it will jump you straight to it. It's colored yellow for easy identification.

so inserting random text shouldn't be a problem like I thought it would be.

I actually can't figure out how to send the invite. I badgered Kraken about it so we'll see what he says. I assumed every user got invites to send out like with Gmail.

They have an invite form for a reason. I sent a request and then realized that I might not be allowed to transfer that invite to another person so I figured Maxi should request his own.

If somebody wants to start an NWR Forum wave, go for it.  I'll make a post about it in the Announcements forum.

Could somebody toss me an invite?  Google is just stingy with these things.

I'm not really sure what use a single NWR wave would have aside from as a place to find out everybody's Google account name.  It would be more apt as a replacement of the entire forum system (but it's too buggy right now for that).

NWR 3.0 perhaps? ;)
