Title: *Official* Google Voice Thread
Post by: Stogi on July 17, 2009, 08:47:39 PM
So I just got invited to Google Voice. It's a service that allows you to have one number that encapsulates all your other phones.

Anyway, I need your help to come up with 7 or 10 letter phrases or words that I could use for my phone number. I've found some funny ones already, but nothing I'd consider good enough to keep.

Let's hear what you got!

Well I found my phone number:

(___)CDZ-NUTZ
(___)239-6889

So let's turn this into the Official GV thread.

It's by far the coolest thing to happen to my cell phone. The feature I've used the most so far is customized voicemails.

Don't be dumb, Vudu. Just like Gmail, Voice isn't open to the public just yet. BnM, I don't have any invitations right now, but when I do I will PM you.

Don't be so lazy as to not follow the link.

Please leave your name and email, and we'll invite you as soon as Google Voice becomes available.

Yes seriously.
Can you summarize what some of those links are talking about?
actually can you just bullet point the Pros & Cons?

thanx vudu ;)

As much as i am interested in Google Voice, it's won't work here in europe: We don't get charged to receive incoming calls, hence Google wouldn't make any money off it here.

So I thought my favorite feature was the personalized greetings but I found something better.

When someone calls you for the first time through GV, they first talk to an "assistant" asking for their name. After it records their name, it proceeds to forward the call to you. Once you answer said call, you have a few choices. First, it tells you who is calling, then it asks what you would like to do.

Pressing 1 accepts the call.

Pressing 2 sends the call to voicemail.

Pressing 3 sends the call to voicemail but allows you to listen in like you would with an answer machine at home; pressing 3 again picks up the call.

Pressing 4 (and this is my favorite) accepts the call and records it.

So it like a phone call mediator that takes your call and forwards it to your phone?

I didn't read up on it yet, even though that is what I could be doing while I'm doing my online traffic school right now.

That's one part of it, yes. It also allows you to access all your conversations, text or voice, through a gmail like service. You can also call and text through your computer and best of all, the more you use it, the more money you gain to make cheap international calls. You can also pick up a phone call or reply to a text through your computer.

I'm having a lot of phone with this.

Sounds badass to me. I'd love to be able to send a text from work so i don't have to look like a tool whipping out my phone everytime i feel it vibrate (i'm kinda OCD about responding to emails/text).

I'd love my number to be:

642-4235 aka MIC HAEL. Thats easy enough to remember right?

Ya, I tried my name first as well, but they didn't have it. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Who knows. I just think its funny you can pick because i was takling about such a subject with my girlfriend. I'd love for my phone number to spell out something simple, so it'd be easier for people to remember. The first 7-letter word i could think of just happened to be my first name, how much easier could it get than that?

So I did a little minor research on this, and now do I not only wish I had it, but didn't print out so many business cards a few weeks ago.

Google Voice lets you have one Ph# in whatever area code you want that will simultaneously ring all your other phones so that no matter where you are, you don't have to miss a call, and no matter who is calling you, they only have to call one number.

It allows you to read your voicemails in text format, which could come in handy if you are in a noisy environment or don't have a phone nearby.
It also allows you to screen all your calls like an answering machine before answering, if you choose to answer.

But one of the major draws to this service, is the "FREE" minutes exploit.
(If you primarily use your cell hone for out-going calls, then this is what would interest you)

Some of the major cell phone services providers (Sprint, T-Mobile & Verizon) offer a Favorites plan, where you get to choose a certain amount of phone numbers that you can call, regardless of their service provider, and not be charged any minutes. A you choose your own "IN" plan. You set your Google Voice Ph# as your "IN" # and all you do is call that number before making any outgoing call. Now you have unlimited talk minutes for all outgoing calls as long as you remember to route it through GV.

That would especially come in handy for people that run their business on the go(like myself), and can't check every phone for missed calls every 30 minutes.
I could put 2 #''s on my business card. My GV # and my main office front desk #. My GV would then ring my home office, & cellphone with every call, so I would never have to worry about missing a call again.

I checked my gmail account and I didn't receive an invite, but I hear you had to sign up for it a while ago. Kashogi, whats up wit the invite? hook a brotha up.

I got an invite, too.  I'm trying to think of something clever to use for a phone number.  Nothing I come up with is available.  :(

Is it possible to create one now and then change/add a Google number later?

Blyk is closing up shop here. It was a mobile network mean for 16-24 year olds who got £15 free allowance in exchange for receiving MMS/SMS adverts. I had it (and loved the freeness; i just deleted all the ads!).

Blyk closing up poses questions for Google Voice and how it's going to make money the same way if Blyk tried for 2 years and didn't.

It's Google... they don't need to make money from you, just collect all your information.
They collect information, identify patterns and trends and then sell that information.
We are slowly inviting Google into every aspect of our lives, and none of us seem to care.

There were only two 'vudu' numbers available in my area code.  The extra three numbers in one of them spelled 'sux'.  The other one didn't spell anything.

Damn, I can't get my Magic Jack(MJ) to work with Google Voice(GV).
I had to forward my MJ calls to be able to accept GV, but now if you call my GV I cant push buttons to accept the call from my MJ.
I'm soo close to this being a good thing, yet not close enough.

Looks like Google Voice has just made a very nice expansion
http://www.google.com/chat/voice/

now you can do you GVoicing through GMail.
all within the browser and no cell phone or house phone needed.
I'm assuming a headset or mic and speakers will work through gmail.
