Title: Ever Been Fired?
Post by: D_Average on June 16, 2009, 03:34:02 PM
Obviously, just got let go. First full time job, almost five years in. The short story is my company was illegally forcing its employees to work over time at no cost, got sued, lost, was forced to change its policy, and removed some associates to save $$$
Considering I have approx 10 weeks paid to find a new gig, I'm going to consider it a gift rather than fight it. I've been meaning to quit for a while now and this is just what I needed to get started.
However, getting let go never looks great to the next employer so I'm curious who else has been through this and found something better when it was all said and done. Overall, I'm surprised how relieved a feel considering how bad I wanted to avoid the stigma of getting "fired".

Somehow I don't equate being "let go" (we're unable to sustain so many employees, sorry and goodbye) to being "fired" (you fucked up! we'll never forget this! you're outta here!).

Yeah, it sounds more like being laid off, which is very different from being fired. Unless you're omitting some details!

Well, technically, I "resigned". Basically, after the lawsuit, anyone who could not complete their 60 hour workload within the new 40 hour threshold was "forced to resign". It was pretty shady, but there wasn't much I could do considering I work in a state where you can be let go "at will". So it was a bit of both as I had no choice to stay, but I was still given some sort of severance pay to cushion the blow. And damn, sure felt good to get out of there and play a round of Frolf on their dime!
Its an HR firm by the way, similar to Fidelity, but bigger. Looking to land a job at a small company but I'll take anything I can get for now.

Just say you quit if that's technically the reason and I don't think a new employer would care to probe much further unless you were becoming an FBI agent or something.

I almost got fired from my first job, at Winn-Dixie, basically for being the anti-model employee. It's a long story, but it ended when I wanted to stay home to go to a friend's birthday party, but I was already in trouble for something else, and the manager told me to come in or I'm fired - "I'll be there...", then I went to my friend's party instead and never went back to that **** hole. This was nearly 10 years ago, I had been with them for 2 years and worked my way up from bagger at $5.15/hr to office staff at a whopping...$5.90 an hour. Oh well, they'll be bankrupt soon, I'd like to think that me quitting was the beginning of their complete downfall.

This.
I lie on job interviews all the time about why i "chose to leave" certain jobs, and every job i've landed has been progressively better (pay wise..) than the last. At your next interview, if it comes up, just say something like "I just to leave my most recent position in order to find newer, more challenging opportunities. My prior firm ended up letting many people go, and I feel good about my decision to leave on my own tersm" or some other BS

I absolutely love this topic so much because it relates to me in some way or another.
I'm sure others can relate to employers BSing their way around things.

Haha. Nice. Good to hear its worked out well for you. And there is no way a future employer could find out the truth. My former employer does not talk to other employers. They use an Employer Verification line where the only info give is the dates I worked for the company. Groovy.

Oh yeah, of course!
The car drealership i'm working had was sold to a private owner (used to be corporate) and it just happened to be right before my vacation time kicked in. So 6 months ago when this all happened, i technically became a NEW employee of this private owner so me (and everyone else who didn't yet acquire vacation time) had to basically start all over...
There were even talks about our health benefits being dropped (or reduced at minimum) but luckily that never happened. Still though, as "new" employees we were all on a 3 month probation period, and once that 3 months was over... wtf? ANOTHER 3 month probation period? What kinda **** is that? Thats all over now and even though i still have my job. I guess thats good with the way things are now, but i can't stand this place. Ever since the massive lay offs back before Christmas, i've had to bust my ass 3 times as hard because i'm literally doing 3 peoples jobs simply because they refuse to hire someone new to fill those other two positions. Did i see a pay raise from it? No. Instead, when i spoke to my immidiate supervisor about it he fed me some bullshit lines about how "everyone" is taking on more responsibility because of the situation at hand (lay offs) and that we're all probationary employees (himself included) so perhaps when the probation period is over there might be discussions of pay raises available.
Bull ****. 6 months later and i'm still getting paid for doing 3x the work, meanwhile they HAVE hired like 5 new people, and they're all really minor jobs (4 guys to wash cars down with a hose, 1 guy to assist the parts dept by delivering parts.. yet we still tell people we no longer deliver to other shops and 1 guy to assist this other guy who only drives cars and forth to places we work with to prepare the new cars being sold.), oh and week after week (every wed.) we get food delivered to the dearership for all employees; i found out that **** cost like $400 or so a week, all because the new owner believes "a happy employee is a good employee" or som other BS. All that money they spend on food to try and brainwash us into thinking this guy really cares about his employees would be better used adding a lil to our god damn pay checks.
So yeah, i'm sure we all know about bullshit

I've never been fired, but I have had to fire people. :/ Never fun when that happens.
I also quit a job once with less than 24 hours notice.

Now that's mean. Unless they deserved it.
The place I did it at deserved it because the manager didn't know what she was doing, the store was a dismal wreck, we ran out of everything before the dinner rush every day, and she told me I got certain days off, then scheduled me that day and every day she knew I couldn't work because of school EXCEPT for the days she had told me she had needed me, I got those off ???. I already had travel plans made and she disappeared the whole week between posting the schedule and the day I left.
So I talked to her the day I left and she blammed me for it and claimed she said the exact opposite even though I wrote down the days she had said. So I just left my uniform on her desk and left.

when i worked at my fast food job i was supposed to get spring break off, my mom was coming to vist. Well the management changed. Manager Todd just disappeared. I got put on the schedule. So, my mom was visiting, i said **** it, i'm tired of this job anyway. So i quit. Not only that my Roommates grandpa and his mom was in town visiting him and we ended up visiting Old Tucson. It was a lot of fun, his mom bought me a gigantic margarita and we got on the train that went around the park. It felt really good because I had a nice buzz going. His Grandpa was in a wheel chair and just had his leg amputated because of his diabetes. I didn't mind pushing him around either, because he said something hilarious every minute or so. Anyhow, I'm glad that's what we did because the old man died a month later. He was a cool old dude, that's something you'll never get a chance to do again.

I've been fired before.
A couple year back, I was working at "fancy" restaurant in a hotel and they had me doing the worse jobs you could imagine. For example, I had to scrub the grime between the tiles on the floor for an entire week. I had to use industrial Lime cleaner and I'm pretty sure that fucked me up on more than one occasion.
Anyway, that **** sucked and I wasn't going to let it go. So to get back at them, I drank beer out of the bar and even stole a couple of the bottles (I was 19 at the time). I also ran a lit'le scheme in conjunction with a friend in order to steal money (we would pocket buffet money).
Everything was going real well till I forgot I had to work one day, so I was fired.

Unless you were fired with cause, future employers won't care as long as you have a reasonable explanation and good references.

This is true in some cases. Yet if you did something like shoplift, then you are screwed.
Wal-Mart, however, is the only company I know of that won't fire bad workers because they can't, unless you did what I mentioned above. My local Wal-Mart suffered this one BADLY when I worked there. Hard workers like myself broke our backs while the stupid teenage pricks goofed off, we complained and while the managers gave us the typical "We're fixing it" BS, we resigned while they were stuck with the ****.
They say that once you worked at Wal-Mart, you can work ANYWHERE. Oh boy, was it true. ;)

Have you ever seen that Jeff Dunham ventriloquist skit with Walter where Walter says he wants to be a Wal-Mart greeter? "Welcome to Wal-Mart, get your **** and get out!"
I was more hoping Unclebob knew of it and would reply with that quote.

I've only been to 2 Wal-marts ever, one was a super wal-mart somewhere upstate and there was no greeter. The second was a 'regular' wal-mart near the city i work in and i've only been there a handful of times but only ONCE was there a greeter... but boy he did his job well!
Oh and that wasn't sarcasm, he was a very pleasant man, came off very freindly and genuine with his greeting.

So tomorrow is sort of going to be a moment of truth. It is the day the new schedule is posted and I will find out if I've lost my main job through 'lack of hours' or not. I can badger the pizza places for some hours possibly and am applying at a nice custodial job my brother-in-law is quitting and he put in a good word for me.
I could also try and negotiate with the current boss to give me at least a few shifts. I mean, is it fairer to cut people entirely or just give a number of poeple lesser hours so they at least get a paycheck? We will see.

I'm sure there will be plenty of chances to play together soon.
On another note, my boss hasn't called me which is a good sign. Last week he called to tell me in advance that I was not going to be on the schedule so I wouldn't be shocked and surprised. The schedule typically goes up around 5-7PM.

Just quit.
Your story reminds of another in which my friend, who manages a restaurant, gave less and less hours to one of his employees till one day he just stopped giving him hours. He was trying to let him down easy instead of firing him, but eventually he had to tell him off.
Just quit and keep some dignity.

^That. When i used to work retail, this was a tactic used by the store manager to encourage someone to quit rather than have to fire them. Its a shitty tactic if you ask me, but i guess it works...
Do yourself a favor and start looking for other work.

I already have. The suckything is that I think it could have to do with two mistakes I made. I misread the military time and thought I was supposed to be at a sight at 8 and it was really 6. The second time I forgot my phone and since that is our only way of checking in we had to do a workaround. He wanted me to go buy a new phone on the spot.
:/
I have a pretty nice one thanks to my brother-in-law that I will find out next week. He's leaving his job and the workers are pretty scarce. Full benefits, medical, dental, paid really nice compared to what I am used to. It also sounds like I have the deal sealed since I know them well and used to work for them a while ago in a different role. The only question is if they want to rehire somebody. That seems to be what they are deciding.
