Title: ENTERTAIN ME!!!...please...(It's that time again)
Post by: Stratos on June 13, 2009, 10:26:48 PM
I'm bored and stuck in the security office at my school. It's lock is broken so I have to stay in here and watch the cameras until it's time to go home. I don't want to go much farther than e-mail, social networking sites and here because if I go too far or do too much online then I could run the risk of getting internet privelages revoked. And there are no new threads here to comment on that I see.

Could somebody tell me a story or something to entertain me for the last few hours of my shift? It's been a long day and I want to hear a story.

Thanks  ;D

A funny story.. hmm. After my post in the game inventory thread, a certain poster read it for about 10 minutes and never posted. Looks like I was right

Why don't you tell us about yourself. What games are you playing now and want to get this year?

So I guess LineRider is out of the question?

OK, I'm obsessed with Animal Crossing City Folk right now because hanging with the NWR crew on there is amazing.

...I play MyBrutes...that counts as a game, right?

Not a whole lot else right now, actually. Been pretty busy. I play a lot of hearts on my cell phone. I also play some Pop 'Em Drop 'Em Samegame on WW. I try to also squeeze some Mario Kart Online in when I can. Also the coin launcher game on Brawl has been a huge unwinder game for me since there are still several thousand coins I have stored up. So I play that. I keep trying to get into Sam & Max but I am stuck on a major roadblock and refuse to look up the answer or go ahead to the next episode and play out of order.

I'm getting BWii for the WiFi night. And I hope to buy Conduit, Indiana Jones and Overlord on the 24th if my deposit check from my last apartment comes soon enough.

I actually spend more time on here than playing games. Kinda sad, I guess. But that's how it's rolling right now.

All right, Whatchyou Been Playin?

So I guess LineRider is out of the question?

I don't own that game. I will not go onto any online flash game sites because I will not risk my computer priveleges being revoked.

My most recent Wii game is Rubik's World. Yes, I was interesting in it because I like the Rubik's Cube, but it actually got some decent reviews as well. The premise of the game is that all of the cubes of Rubik's Cubes have wondered off to create their own puzzle world. The game contains eight types of puzzle games, which include things like stacking cubes to form certain shapes, guiding rolling cubes so they don't bump into each other, and of course the original Rubik's Cube itself.

I haven't played much of it but I'm enjoying it so far. It actually has all four sizes of Rubik's Cubes in it but the interface is kind of clunky. I'd been wanting to try the cube that's one larger than the original (it's called Rubik's Revenge) but I'd rather have it in physical form so I could watch TV or something whilst I twist.

I've been curious about that game. It goes right along with Mercury Meltdown as bargain games that I'd like to get.

I've never understood how they work. I've been able to get one side completely solid but not more than that. I guess I'm not a three-dimentional thinker.

I'd recommend it if you like puzzle games, but some of the puzzles have a difficulty that's comparable to the Rubik's Cube so beware.

Solving the Rubik's Cube isn't easy. Part of what it takes is memorization, especially if you go the trial-and-error route. Getting the middle and especially the final side requires you to figure out sequences of moves which will move the cubes on one side but leaves the others where they were after you're finished. If you can memorize the moves you made when trying to figure out a sequence then you can reverse it if you make a mistake.

Starting with the Rubik's Junior is also a good idea because it is easier to learn basic sequences with it.

What I think is crazy is the person who solved it when blindfolded. In three minutes, no less.

I've been playing through Minish Cap and every now and then Wii Sports. Also guitar hero, only IRL.

I am following the Tiger Woods Wii thread closely to see if M+ is working out and it sounds great. I want to get that and WSR, as well as Endless Ocean 2. They all sound like great improvements over previous iterations.

Do you have wireless internet and mario kart ds at your work?

No...no wireless.
I don't even have it at home right now because the security is too high. My Dad had to be prodded to lower it enough to allow the Wii to use it.

Though I do enjoy that and Phantom Hourglass online.

I had a kid in an old youth group I led who could solve a Rubik's Cube in around 5 minutes while blindfolded. It is very impressive.

I've got it!  Play tetris on a piece of paper.  We'll give you the pieces, and you draw out their placement.

I'll start:

L-block Z-block I-block o-block L-block z-block z-block I-block.

GO!

Technically, it is possible to be forced to lose tetris.  If the shapes are all randomly either only s-blocks or only z-blocks hundreds of times in a row, then you'd be forced to lose.  Apparently, this means that even if you tried to play tetris forever, if the random number generator did it's job, after years and years, you would eventually, someday have to lose.

It made me cry.

Here's something you might find entertaining, my review of Carmageddon, the worst game I've ever played:

The first paragraph is kind of weak but the rest is pretty good.

That is a brilliant idea. Sadly it must wait for another time or be played without me. It is time for lockdown. Thanks for keeping me busy y'all :)

The game gets infinitely faster.  After reaching so many levels, the blocks would move too fast to control.  The tetrominoes that fall wouldn't matter.

Depends on the version of Tetris. NES and Game Boy versions cap at level 19. The highest speed does create a sort of "cone" of where it is possible to move pieces, so it wouldn't take very many s- and z-blocks to fill it up. Certainly not years. Maybe hours.
Title: Re: ENTERTAIN ME!!!...please...
Post by: that Baby guy on June 17, 2009, 07:06:42 PM
The reason why it takes years is that the sequence of just "s-blocks" or "z-blocks," well, the number of them needed in a row, that might take time to come up on the RNG.  It's not like you can just will the RNG in your direction.  If that were the case, it wouldn't be an RNG.

Post by: Mop it up on June 17, 2009, 07:11:20 PM
But at the highest speed level you wouldn't need to get very many in order for it to fill up the movable space. If you could play where the speed level stays at level 1, then maybe you could play for years, but not at level 19.

Don't forget the terrible plague of infinite spin that has been an official part of Tetris in recent years.  I've maxed out the line counter in Tetris DS, and it's easy.  My record is 180 something on the Game Boy version, and that was a rare feat that took everything I had (I think I only broke 180 twice).

That's exactly why the NES and Game Boy Tetris are the best versions. I like it when my games end after a reasonable length, thank you.

Tell that so some friends of mine. If their games of RTS' like StarCraft last less than an hour it was a poor game in their mind. Real matches take whole days to finish right.

Well those are strategy games, big difference there. Puzzle games are scored-based, so they should be about achieving a high score within a certain amount of time, not a marathon to see how long you can last.
Title: Re: ENTERTAIN ME!!!...please...
Post by: Stratos on June 18, 2009, 12:16:34 AM
Those guys tended to translate that to everything they played.

Isn't the point of 'Marathon Mode' in puzzle games to go for as long as possible?

Title: Re: ENTERTAIN ME!!!...please...
Post by: Mop it up on June 18, 2009, 12:19:28 AM
No. Your score isn't measured in time.
Title: Re: ENTERTAIN ME!!!...please...
Post by: Stratos on June 18, 2009, 12:43:34 AM
then why the name "Marathon Mode"? You want to keep going for as long as possible. That is what that mode is for. For a player good at the game, more time playing = higher score.

That doesn't mean it has to last for hours. The difficulty should ramp up quickly so you can try to last longer and longer without having to have 5-hour sessions each time.

Some games take a long time to ramp up in difficulty.

Guess who's working the 13 hour security shift and is bored? At least I can patrol the building from time to time but that's getting old again. Instead of the security office door not opening my mag card can't open any of the outer doors. But I have a hard key for all those so it's not a problem so long as I have those.

Anyone want to tell me a story? (a safe for work story?) ;D

I actually enjoyed that part a whole lot back in the day. Partly because as soon as I got Epona wandered anywhere and everywhere I could in the game and felt all special discovering it before the game told me about the area.

Good times.

Nobodys told me a story yet... :(

But I did see a funny poster in the school here.

It says "Protect Yourself, Taste The Rainbow" and has a bunch of different colored condom packets falling from the sky and a whole bowl full as well. Odd and funny. Thought about starting a thread about it but I can't find the image online and I think that would be perfect.

Has nothing to do with that.

Client I was highered specifically to help with canceled their contract. I'm not the only one getting little to no hours. Besides, I'm allowed to use the internet. So long as I make a patrol every hour and watch the cameras it is all good. That is what I was told. I don't normally work here anyway. I'm the official cover guy for this site when the two main guys are not available.
