Title: The Legendary Starfy
Post by: BeautifulShy on May 30, 2009, 02:47:15 AM
There was some talk about this game a few months back when this was announced. Haven't heard much since then. Is anybody interested in this game?

Somewhat depends on the quality, Starfy 4 was supposedly not very good.

Is this game based on any of the previous games?

The Legendary Starfy = Densetsu no Starfy 5 in Japan. KDR is correct, Starfy 4 was definitely not the greatest game, however the ones preceding it were far better.

Basically, it's a cute little platformer with some boss battles and a focus on exploration. I have enjoyed the series and am greatly looking forward to the game. I'll also be doing the review when I get back from E3.

I'll probably pick it up if and when I get a DSi because platformers are my favorite genre and I'd be losing my large library of them on the GBA.

I've picked it up, barely touched it, it seems cute so far, but by no means is it difficult, and I'm on the fence about fun so far, but it's still trying to teach me how to play, basically, despite me already figuring it out much quicker than it has.  It's definitely made for beginners to platformers/action games, I will say.  Starfy is similar in characteristics to Kirby, so is the art, as we've all heard and seen.

I've played through the first 2 worlds of the game now, and it's really just been "Meh," the whole way through, as far as gameplay is concerned.  There's not much challenge, but neither is there much fun.  The best thing about the game is a sub-par combo system, so far.  You spin into enough enemies with a short time between each hit, and are rewarded with relatively pointless jewels.

The game's cutscenes and non-gameplay art is gorgeous.  Starfy, and all the characters in the game are drawn like soft, fluffy stuffed animals.  So much so that every time I notice a "seam" drawn in, I can practically feel the fluffiness.

Aside from that, exploration is merely "Go in every direction, and look at the walls for a crack in them every once in a while."  Starfy requires holding down a button to swim quickly, but it should have been automatic, as moving otherwise, is practically a crawl.  On land, you hold the spin-button down to run, but you're not on land often, at least, not yet, so it's not too bad.

You gain abilities as you progress through the game, but not typically by any plot-driven means.  Starly learned how to glide partway through the second world, and I was left wondering why they didn't just leave the glide available from the start, truly.

All-in-all, I feel like this game is almost exactly what it's marketed as:  A beginner's platformer/exploration game, truthfully meant for children.  There's not much gameplay, and the story is cute, at best, but has no where near the charm of say, a Pixar film, meant for all audiences.  If you have a little brother or sister, or any child interested in gaming, The Legendary Starfy would be a great start, but I say this with respect when I say it's just not for us, ladies and gentleman.

I'm actually glad Nintendo localized this game!
I tried the Japanese version back when it was released and enjoyed it. Plus, it looks like they just translated the text and did not change anything.
I'll probably buy it when it's a bit cheaper.

How much is it? I might get this as a b-day present for my little sister.

What's up with high profile DS games costing $35? Surely this doesn't use one of the larger and more costly cards?

Okay, so I finished playing the game last night - got 100% (I believe).

The first half of the game is very meh.  It does pick up though.  By the end of the game, at the super secret final boss of the super secret and somewhat difficult level 10, I was cursing at vudu because I kept getting my ass kicked.

The level design reminded me of Super Princess Peach - which could just be because I played SPP right before playing through Starfy.  The levels were pretty straight forward, with plenty of hidden things that weren't too difficult to find - combined with the built-in hint system (Moe on the bottom screen tells you when you're in an area where there's a hidden secret), you won't be looking on GameFAQs to find any hidden treasures or how to get out of a level.

It's not the worst platformer ever made, but it's not the best on the DS.  Worth a playthough if you already own it or you can pick it up on the cheap (I got mine, buy one get one half off at TRU with Super Princess Peach when it first came out).

Yes, it's not hard to make comparisons to SPP since TOSE made both games.

I absolutely love the artwork in this game. It almost rivals Mario's 2-D artwork.

I will definitely agree, I love the stuffed-plush art direction, and I'd like to see it more, in other games.  It's something I admired from the Tonberries in My Life as a Dark Lord on Wii-Ware, too.
