Interview.  Wii Motion + support. Yay!

Another pretty wii title from HVS.  And this is looks to even outshine the conduit.

wow. Are they gonna slow it down a bit? I mean, they are really risking it all on Wii. WTF.

Not that I mind.

Well it still have about a year at least before releasing.  They said they were shooting for a 2010 Q1 release.

I didn't see any images, but you think that was what the secret game pic was from?
I posted a photoshopped cleaned up version of the pic that seems to fit the title perfectly.

let me go dig it up.

edit:
here is a pic that most closely resembles what I think I could see

Yes it's the same game. The picture that was cleaned up is concept art that matches one of the in-game shots on IGN.

This sounds awesome.

I didn't see any any images at teh IGN link. can you post a link to them?

edit:
Nevermind, FF wouldn't show them so I had to switch my rendering engine to IE
anyway, heres the direct link to the pics for those interested:

I'm not all that interested in this. I guess I need to see more, but so far the descriptions don't grab me. But its me, not the game.

Sounds like Nick enjoys being the flame bait haha. I'm still not sold on HVS due to their inconsistencies, however it's awesome that they are putting in a lot of effort on their big original titles. For some reason I wish that HVS makes another Hunter: The Reckoning.

Did HVS really make the Hunter games? I liked the GC one a lot. May have been a bit shallow but with a few friends it was a blast.

The game looks cool. I dig it.

I'm especially excited to see how they use M+ with it.

We are implementing a split-screen mode for multiplayer. We currently have it running in either horizontal or vertical configuration for player customization.

Looks like Excite multiplayer haters will not have to be stuck with a wonky split screen.

After scouring the interview to write up an article based on it (should be up soon. someone please edit), it looks like it could be pretty good on paper. Kind of like that Lucasarts game Gladius, but with less RPG stuff.

I'm interested to see how the combat works with the controls and to see if each character's story is actually good.

Every big thing HVS plans to do sounds great on paper, but we still haven't seen a finished product. I'll be considerably more excited for this game if I like The Conduit a lot.

if this is done like soul caliber or tekken i think it could be interesting. the picture looks too linear, which i am hoping is just a issue with the camera angle.

i was a H:TR fanatic (the paper game). I own all of the games, but only played the GC version (lol, no xbox or ps2). good games, but really didn't have much to do with the paper game.

It's supposed to be an over-the-shoulder camera so you more easily relate to the Wii+chuck motion combat, so it's definitely not a last-gen 2D plane fighter.

State sponsored murder gaming FTW.

It really depends on where that hole in the wall is, as lots of gloryous things can happen with a hole in the wall, some of which really might surprise you.

It's apparent this game is what their engine demo was really trying to showcase, not The CondomUnit.  All the roman junk and architecture was already there for a reason.

I need to see how well The Conduit turns out first.  Then I'll have an idea if these guys are a dev where I'm going to be excited about every game they make.  In the hands of a good dev this concept COULD be good but if Conduit is TEH SUCKS then I'm only going to pay attention to this if it cleans up in reviews.

So if the Conduit is mediocre, are we going to live though another 2 year hype train for Gladiator?

Some more than others.  Mad Dog McCree: Gunslinger Pack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIzTLGD2JkE) is dropping next week, but I don't see a thread for it.  There's just not the same love for Mad dog in 2009 like there was in 1989.

so hopefully there is a better trailer on the way.

Yeah that trailer sucked. Hard.

The gameplay couldn't look less interesting from that trailer, and the graphics weren't anything write home about. I'm guessing they may have a hard time picking up a publisher for this game. The Conduit seemed from day 1 to be perfectly capable of getting one, however, this is far gorier, and far less interesting looking. I guess it all hinges on the success of The Conduit.

Did you read what I wrote in the talk back thread? I pretty much told them, I appreciate the attention, but I don't want them to kill themselves over this :P

Trailer is very early.  This game isn't really my cup of tea also.... so I'm not sure I'm going to be into it. The Conduit and The Grinder are more my cup of tea.

Title: Re: HVS: Gladiator A.D. OMG
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on May 28, 2009, 12:47:32 PM
I think IGN produced that trailer from the early copy that they got to play. I'm pretty sure thats why HVS contacted them saying that they were gonna send them a better trailer that is more representive of where the game is at now. But I think in the eyes of many right now, the damage has been done. People will forever be critical of The Gladiator A.D. even though we know it has atleast 6 month minimum to go.

The new trailer is up. The one thig that I love about the game is the character animation. The guys just look and move like they have weight to them.
Other than that, its all gameplay but I can't tell what the gameplay is. Just a bunch of waggle or what?

I don't mean: "They must be exhausting all their man-power on this game This project looks way too hard to complete!"

I mean: "These guys are fucking douches and they're trying way too hard to seem cool and hardcore. This looks like a bland, uninteresting and ugly game and the only reason it's getting any attention is because it's on the Wii."

Understand? Thanks for playing.

There's practically no such thing on Wii.  The trailer wasn't encoded too well, again, and the best measure against it is art direction and framerate.

This needs to get put on the back burner and chalked up as a tech demo, for their engine that they are obviously trying to promote, and start focusing on an earlier release date for The Reckoning: L4D

Which isn't a terrible game to be compared to.

A weapons based Punch-Out could be cool. I still think once this gets farther along it will look better and play better.
After all, it's still got, what, 8-10 months before their targeted completion date? Early 2010. Not like it's releasing this Fall.

It's biggest problem is the actions have no transitions whatsoever, therefore no sense of flow.  They need to be able to string together appropriate actions and reactions, otherwise the game is practically turn-based.

If you guys want to watch a show that looks like this game would tie in very well with, watch Spartacus: Blood and Sand on Starz (also available on Fancast and Netflix).

That is the one. But after seeing the new screens for this game, it doesn't look the same anymore. New game lacks CSI: Miami yellow bloom.

I don't like the new style. I hope they turn my impression around though.

Looks like HVS just can't catch a break.

Now that there is the WiiWare Gladiator game that uses M+ and Sony is releasing Gladiator Champion (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2780/4422318263_60d4ab3359_b.jpg) for Move, HVS's title isn't so unique anymore. I bet they wish they could have released their games on time and had the "Gladiator" market all to themselves.

They better rush this game and get to work on The Grinder so that it releases before Halloween 2010.

LAFFO at how HVS has dug their own grave by working with whatever publisher they're with.

Okay, I actually like the colorful new direction.  I personally enjoy art direction more when it colorful, no graystation 3 for me. :P  Everything looks nicely detailed, but the presentation i sreally hoakey and over  the top, BUT i like that too. This game is much more visual appealing than the original concept. Hell, at least it looks like the art team is actually trying this time.

Combat looks a bit slow and needs to be smoothed out , but it looks like it has potential.  Just make everything more over the top , HVS.

They should get Kid Icarus on loan from Nintendo, that should move some units.

Question to ask HVS:
Why do they keep showing games and then changing the overall look and play style so drastically between reveal and release.

What happened to Motion Plus Support?

How do they feel about Gladiator Champion(Move) and that other Gladiator game(WiiWare)?

Have they had any luck licensing out the engine that they have spent so much time perfecting for the Wii? (It's producing some pretty nice visuals for the Wii)

What is the status of The Grinder on the Wii? Are we getting the FPS that was originally shown and if we are, can we also get the 3rd person over the top shooter too?

What is the status on Animales De La Muerte? Is it still on the backburner? Retail Release? Do they have an interested publisher(Sega)?

The Conduit 2..... will it happen? how many copies has the original sold up to this point?
And general ideas on what they would do for a sequel?

Now that they are developing for PS360, what do they think of the motion control alternatives that they provide?

And finally, what other games are they working on right now?

I think I may boycott this game until The Grinder releases as an FPS

Is it too late to ask another question?

Have they ever considered a "camera lock (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=24800.msg592903#msg592903)" button in their configuration? What are the chances of something like that showing up in their next FPS game?

Good news! Sega is doing the smart thing and releasing this game at $30!

New Trailer looks.... garish. I don't think is going to be a Soul Calibur Killer.

Actually, after watching that trailer I'm fairly interested in the game. Sure, the voices and dialogue seem less than stellar but the gameplay looks promising. If it's even remotely similar to Soul Calibur with motion controls I'm down with it. It may not be a 'Calibur Killer' but it could still be quite fun.

For $30 it is more tempting. This is what they should have priced HOTD:Overkill
Title: Re: Tournament of Legends (Gladiator A.D.)

Overkill is $20 now. Though I'd rather get Darkside Chronicles once that is cheaper.

They should re-advertise HotD now that it's $20. It could push a worthy amount of copies if people knew it at that price.

You know, I think that is one of the biggest failing third parties do. They should advertise their games for longer than the first month before release.

Well, the verdicts are coming in for this game and it's not looking too pretty.

IGN-5.0

Destructoid-75

Nintendo Power - 70

Metacritic - 45

Ouch.

so it averages out to an above average game, nothing to rush out and pre-order.

That only confirms what we already expected since the day it was revealed.
Now they can concentrate on what we do want them to finish which is The Grinder.

If they can make the multi-player like L4D2, it goes from a will buy to a will pre-order.

This game is out already?

One thing I wonder about with reviews of games like this, is if they take the price into consideration. I don't think anyone expects this game to be as good as a $50 game. That said... some of those scores sure are low. GameSpot gave it a 4.5, and I tend to agree with their scores.

Also, some stores are selling this for $50. Watch out!

So it'll be interesting to see what you think of the game, ShyGuy.

Whew! This waggle fest is giving me a workout! Not bad for a Soul Calibur clone. Character roster is small but interesting. Graphics have a lot of nice affects but the color scheme is very garish. Arenas are pretty. I think there is more to the combat if you learn all the moves and specials.

It may not meet the standards of Ty "I hate Wifi" Shugart, but I like it!

A fighting game value at twice the price! (two times $2.69 equals $5.38)
