Title: Contra Rebirth coming to Wiiware
Post by: GoldenPhoenix on May 08, 2009, 03:34:42 AM
http://www.konami.jp/products/dl_wii_contra_re_ww/ (http://www.konami.jp/products/dl_wii_contra_re_ww/)

Fantastic news, it looks like it has similar visuals to Contra 3 and IV. Even though I suck at the Contra games I love them. Definitely a must buy for me! Sadly it will probably take several months to come here even though it is supposed to come out in Japan on May 18th.

So just hang in there. While were waiting for games like Contra Rebirth, and Bubble Bobble we get to play greats like Happy Penguins give you Hugz.

I'm making a small effort to make sure that the rest of the forums are more colorful (pics & videos) than the talkback section.

I have Contra and Super C for the NES, but the only times when I could make any real progress in them was when I played co-op with my brother. We had to use the lives code though... he didn't need it, but I sure did! These days I can't even get past the first stage...

I liked 8-bit Contra more but overall we'll have to wait and see how this turns out.

What a surprise. Is Wayforward developing this? As far as I know, the people who made Konami's awesome games before 1998 have now left the company. (AKA Treasure, Good Feel)

Still looks great though.

Nintendo Life said the Gradius Rebirth team is doing it.

If it is like Contra IV I may pass but if it is like the AMAZING SUPER GREAT STUNNING Contra 3 I'm so buying this.

I really liked Gradius Rebirth so I am looking forward to this. I hope it comes out this year for US WiiWare.

Wasn't Gradius Rebirth a new game in the series? I never played it.

I'm excited about this. I love Contra 4.

Contra 4 plays like 1/2 (from what i remember playing back in the day... mainly dying.) Super Contra III was the best one, but it was probably easier (i actually beat it, alone) than the rest. I'm hoping this new one is like III ;D

Contra 3 had fantastic boss battles and was so memorable because of the variety it had.

Yeah I believe so, it looks like a SNES game which is neat and I really like the customizable controls and for high score people it has online rankings. I think that it's worth the 1000 Wii Points.

It also let you hold L+R to let you use both weapons in that awesome jump move that I loved using but always got me killed... GOOD TIMES!

Contra IV had the problem that it was on a damn portable.  I want to play Contra co-op in the living room, DAMMIT!

So yeah this gives me a chance.  My only concern is that those pics only have ONE PLAYER!  Come on, Konami!  Nobody plays Contra one player!  Show us co-op so that we have no fear that you guys are fucking up huge and not including it.  Though since there is a lot of space on the screen for a second status bar I think we're safe.

Co-op has already been confirmed.  What isn't quite clear is whether it's local co-op, online co-op or both.

If it had online Co-op this would be a must-buy game. One of the reasons i can't go back and finish Contra 4 is the fact that its kinda boring alone.

They HAVE to have local co-op.  It's fucking Contra!  Online co-op would be a great feature but when everyone is on the same screen there is no excuse to not offer local multiplayer.

Hell, that's a good topic for a different thread.  It used to be the online play was a bonus and you never really knew for sure if you would get it.  Now it's so common that old-fashioned multiplayer is no longer a sure thing.  Why just swap one for the other?

I'm assuming local co-op.  It would be incredibly stupid to not offer that.  For me the absence of it would be a complete deal breaker.

I don't think Ian's comment is a complaint, rather just a statement. And for alot of people its probably a valid one.

Funny how every topic he posts in has to turn into a rant of some kind. This is about CONTRA REBIRTH, not "let's rant about co-op that may or may not appear a certain way". It just goes right to the core that unless he can get angry about something he doesn't have anything good to say. If they reveal it is online co-op only then you can rant but before then it seems unnecessary.

Local Co-op is a deal breaker for me as well. Games like this I almost never play alone. I like them for when a buddy comes over.

LOL Orbital sky diving sequence? Not original, but no one has ever had the guts to use it outside of Mecha.

Contra 4 is a fantastic game. The only flaw outside of co-op was that it may have paid too much tribute to pass titles. That and the flame thrower was the worse weapon in the game. They should have copied Contra 3 version.

OK, tangent, but this just reminded me of MDK2. Suddenly, I wish the game would get remade / series would get revisited with Wii pointer controls...

Also, less tangential: did anyone play Shattered Soldier for PS2? I thought it was fantastic, and I enjoyed it thoroughly in one-player mode (though I guess that's because none of my friends were willing to join me in working for 100% on each level).

1UP has videos of the first two levels (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3174178)

Looks good, albeit a bit busy.  The over-the-top explosions obstruct enemies and bullets.  Makes it difficult to see what's coming at you.

Downloaded this on my Japanese Wii today and I'm enjoying it so far having played the first three levels. The graphical style is a little more cartoony than Contra III for Super NES, with more lively animation and greater use of sprite rotation, but it still comes out looking pretty similar overall. It is more smooth considering the size and number of sprites being pushed around here (and a few neat extra touches like glowing effects), but really that's no more than we should expect from this sort of thing. The music will be instantly familiar to Contra fans, though the instrumentation sounds more reminiscent of Treasure's Genesis games than Contra III.

The trademark Contra crazy setpieces are in evidence so far, the first boss being a fight against a humongous space caterpillar which has you hopping from bits of debris (from a space station that just exploded) as you re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. Oh and if you like fighting robot ninjas that hang upside down from giant missiles, this one's for you!

Any robot pirates? That would make the game perfect!

Looks cool in the video.  But they're playing ONE PLAYER!  What's the lowdown with multiplayer?  I assume it's all fine but just a quick confirmation would be nice.  Greg, does it support two players?

Hey Barry, where's Chris?

He was last seen in Africa... but he'll be making his comeback to Nintendo later in one of Capcom's NINE hotly anticipated titles to be shown at E3!

The port?

Yeah, that one, Jill.  You're in it, too.

So are you, Barry.

Yeah, the first level is so visually busy with explosions and smopke everywhere it's often hard to see the enemies before they kill you...
