Title: Klonoa
Post by: BeautifulShy on May 02, 2009, 07:27:36 PM
For some reason there isn't a topic about this. Even though it was announced last October.I am somewhat interested in it. I haven't played this series. So I would like to know what it is about. The game comes out on May 5th. Is anybody going to get it?

Wow thought it was coming out this week.

Golden in one of those talkback topics last week about game releases and DLC. If I am wrong about the date I'll change it and that will give us some time to talk about this interesting game.

It looks OK from the videos I have seen. $30 isn't too bad, but I probably wouldn't spend more than $20. I never played any of the Klonoa games, so this re-make of the first one has no nostalgia for me.
Amazon has it listed as releasing May 5 (this Tuesday). If anyone wants it, please order it from my Amazon Associates site: http://astore.amazon.com/spyke-20/detail/B001PBDBNQ

Ah thanks TJ Spike.I'll correct that.

I pre-ordered it today. I've been wanting to try the original Klonoa ever since I played the first (and only?) GBA Klonoa game. I think the remake looks quite presentable, and it's about time we start seeing more side-scrolling platform games on the Wii.

This game is so pleasant to play. I love it!

There was two GBA games, Caliban. Now then, how is it for reply value? More or less the same as Wario Land: Shake It?

I haven't received my copy in the mail yet, but from what I remember of the PS One original, the replay value wasn't too high. You could go back to all of the levels and collect 100% of the gems, which unlocked at least one wicked secret level. But, aside from starting a new game file a year or two later (which was pretty enjoyable), that was it.
However, it looks like this version of the game has some added modes and such that'll extend replay a good bit further. I think $30 seems reasonable, and most of the game will be a retread for me. I suppose it might make for a good, longer rental, though. But if you like good platformers and can spare the full entry fee, I say go for it.

So this game came in the mail today ... with some shwag. I present to you, the Klonoa hat.

I played the first game then. Thanks True Blue. I haven't played past the first area, but so far from what I've seen, and NovaQ is correct about it, is that you can go back to have the levels at 100%.

I played a friends copy of the GBA one and thought it was fun. I plan to get this game later on.

The logistics of playing the game are going to be a pain, just in the last couple days I got Tenchu IV (got it for $15!), DK Jungle Beat NPC (Never played the original version), and MySims Kingdoms.

Yay for Tenchu! :)
Looks like Klonoa is going to have to wait until next month.

Sounds like a great rental from what I've read, the only negative is it's short and a bit to easy. Hopefully they port Klonoa 2 too.
I'd rather they made a whole new one next if this one is successful but I'll be fine with a remake of number two since I never played that one either.
A brand new game could better take advantage of the Wii's specialties without feeling gimmicky.
I'd much rather have a new Klonoa than Klonoa 2 as well. K2 was easier than the first, and I have a feeling the PS2 graphics wouldn't receive much of an upgrade. Just as long as a new Klonoa expanded on its gameplay and added some difficulty (and avoided any rad-U.S.-teen design changes (http://kotaku.com/5071318/klonoa-may-get-poochied-for-american-wii-release)), I'd be all for it.

I was finally able to pick Klonoa up today. It's been a title I've been interested in since it was announced in October. I'm a sucker for platformers, and I was never interested in Klonoa for Playstation for some weird reason. I've played through the first two bosses, and the game does not disappoint. The visuals look colorful and vibrant, and the music in the game is fantastic. I'm so glad Namco put the game out here, and I'm really hoping they put out at least another one on the wii. I'm going to have to track down the GBA games, too.

You can easily get the 2nd GBA game online for around 10 dollars new. The first one I'm having trouble finding a copy.

Even though I picked up this game launch week I've only now had the opportunity to play it. I just beat vision 3-2 (read: the sixth stage) and so far I'm enjoying it greatly. The jumping mechanic it lots of fun. I think it was Jonny who said that in Klonoa enemies are tools (you use them to perform a double jump) instead of simply obstacles. It's a very good way of describing it.
The game isn't as easy as everyone says--there are definitely a few challenging parts. Then again, I haven't lost a life yet due to running out of hearts (although I've lost a few from falling off the stage). I think your average 10 year old would have a hard time with this game.
A couple minor complaints:
1) The English voice-acting is HORRIBLE. Luckily, you can play the game using the original Phantomile gibberish instead. I turned on the English once out of morbid curiosity and was so disgusted I had to restart the stage halfway through just so I could go back to Phantomile.
2) The level design--while somewhat interesting--is annoying because it's not always obvious which way to go. There are many branching paths that lead to collectibles. Unfortunately, it's not clear which path is the main one and which is the branch. I find myself double-backing quite often because I accidentally took the path that leads to the next section.
Overall, very fun game. Definitely worth $30.

I 100% agree with your description / evaluation. (I would add that the music is great.)
About the hearts: I believe in the original version, you could only lose whole hearts as opposed to half-hearts. This made some of the later boss battles more challenging. If memory serves, Klonoa 2 introduced half-heart damage for teh kiddiez.

Better pre order this one hey? Infernal tells me Atari is doing the distribution in Australia, so it might as well no be getting distributed.

Watched a Boobtube video of the PSX version, and no, the hearts just shrink. Unless there was a hard difficulty mode in the PSX version...

Maybe hard mode is the secret unlockable for finding all of the medallions? Do we have any idea what the reward for that is?

No, I'm just wrong / was worse at videogames back when Klonoa first came out.

I was working on finding that out, but one of those devious challenges was too much for me and I kinda stopped playing the game at all. I've got to go back and try again...

Just started playing this as well through Gamefly and it's a great little game. I haven't had a good platformer in a while.
I really like the 3D/2D thing and the branching, interwoven paths. The game has been a bit easy so far, but we'll see how it progresses.
