Eidos' brand will be left intact despite the recent acquisition.

Every time news of a company buying/merging with another company emerges fans begin to doubt and wonder if the quality and brand of each company will change or be affected by the events. In the case of Eidos and Square Enix, many wondered if Miss Lara Croft from Tomb Raider would be venturing into the realms of Final Fantasy. This, according to Square Enix, will not happen.

On Monday April 27, a week after the successful 84 million pound acquisition of Eidos, Square Enix commented that even if they own Eidos, they will let them operate as their own independent company.

Square Enix Holdings President Yoichi Wada commented that "this is an exciting beginning to what I believe will be an incredible journey. I am very happy that Phil Rogers has agreed to lead Eidos in what I see as an international marriage between our two companies, a marriage that will give birth to great things. Eidos is a content rich company and a culturally significant business to the Square-Enix group."

So the old adage holds true today: The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I wonder if Square Enix and Eidos will collaborate in any way to some effect in the future. It would be wasteful if they just kept on doing things as if they were separate.

Normally, I'd be all for this but let's face it: Eidos needs someone commanding them right now.  If they were an altogether great developer on their own, they wouldn't have needed to be acquired by Square to begin with.  Besides, by keeping the two companies isolated like this I really wonder what Square gains from this merger, since the one thing they could really use right now is someone teaching them how to do non-RPG games (from what I've heard of Dirge of Cerberus, Square is horrible at making such games right now).

Even though they get to remain independent Squeenix could send over some talent to oversee and advise major Eidos projects, thereby ideally bettering the final products.
