Title: Final Fantasy Heading to Japanese Virtual Console in May

Famicom Wars also included in May’s Virtual Console updates.

 Nintendo’s Game Developer’s Conference revealed that the original Final Fantasy, released on the Japanese Famicom in 1987, would be hitting the Virtual Console service soon. Nintendo recently released details on its Virtual Console lineup for May, and Final Fantasy is confirmed to be included in one of the weekly updates.    


Final Fantasy was the first Square Enix(Squaresoft at the time) RPG for the Nintendo Entertainment System, created by Hironobu Sakaguchi. The game was published by Nintendo in the United States and was released in 1990. Its storyline follows four young heroes called the Light Warriors on a mission to rid the world of its many evils.    


Final Fantasy became a big success for Square Enix, saving them from bankruptcy and spawning over thirteen entries in its main franchise and countless spin-off games across many consoles. The first Final Fantasy alone has received many re-releases and remakes on the Wonderswan Color, Playstation, Game Boy Advance, Japanese mobile phones, and the Playstation Portable.    


The classic RPG will also be joined by Nintendo’s war strategy game Famicom Wars, known to American gamers as Advance Wars. Both titles will be priced at 500 Nintendo Points ($5).

I wish other regions would follow Japan's lead and let us know ahead of time what games we will get for the month.

I know it's hopeless, but it would be REAL COOL if Aksys Games (current publishers of Million, who are ex technos members and currently hold the rights Kunio-kun games which us yanks would know as River City Ransom) decided to translate and release Downtown Special Kunio-kun no Jidageki Dayo Zenin Shugou.  Which is, for those who don't know, a feudal japan themed river city ransom.  It's awesome!

But it will not happen...

I sort of thought after SD solution NOA would ramp up VC and Wiiware releases. 
I thought wrong.
I'm jealous of Japan they constantly get a large number of titles and rare games.

I think it's pretty good to see that Square Enix isn't against putting their top titles on the VC.  We all assumed that because of the DS ports they wouldn't suppor the VC very well for fear of it cutting into sales.  Now that probably is why it has taken this long but it's good to know that at SOME point we'll probably get all their big titles.  They probably just want to wait until the time is right and it won't be eating into a different re-release's sales.

Final Fantasy was last re-released on the PSP in 2007.  It appeared on the GBA in 2004.  Maybe that will give us some indication of the time frame here.
