Title: The NBA thread
Post by: BeautifulShy on April 17, 2009, 05:27:01 PM
So the playoffs are coming on Sunday. My Lakers have the second best record in the league behind the Cavs. They are the number 1 seed in the west. It looks like they are going up against the Jazz in the first round.I looks like Andrew Bynum is healthy for the playoffs so if they go up against Boston than it will be a evener match up.

Who are you rooting for?

Garnett :(

Also, there is an NBA playoff thread but there was no March Madness thread?  This place is all backwards.  Although this year WAS kind of meh, UNC had won it before it even started.

So the Lakers beat the Jazz today.I'm pretty happy with the Lakers. They were pretty dominating as a team.

Well the Laker/Jazz series could end on Monday if the Lakers win game 5 at home. The series is 3-1 Lakers.

Well the Lakers had a good game. They really only made a few mistakes. The bench did a good job. Kobe was dominate from the outset.

That is too bad Stogi.I think the Celtics will either make it to the Conferance Finals or the NBA finals. The latter is a stretch but its possible.

That said, I'm pulling for Atlanta and Orlando mostly.

I'm a Bulls fan, so I find this sentiment pretty amusing.  I thought John Paxon ruined my team too, but it looks as if they're tougher than I thought.

Title: Re: NBA Playoffs 2009
Post by: KnowsNothing on April 28, 2009, 05:24:51 PM
I love the Celtics, but man are they struggling.  I don't think they have a prayer of even making it to the finals...they have no Garnett and a pretty shallow bench right now.  Defensively without Garnett they're having a tough time containing Rose.  He seems to be able to score at will.

Last game was awesome even though the Celts lost.  Both Rose and Rondo had good games, and a double overtime is always exciting.  Ray Allen hitting that three at the end of regulation was epic, too bad they couldn't finish it.  But hey, the longer the series the better because it just means I get to see more basketball (provided the Celts eventually advance :P)

Well the Lakers won their series.4-1. Denver has a commanding 3-1 lead on the Hornets. Looks like the Nuggets are going to win that series. The Mavericks is a 6 seed but it looks like they are going to beat the Spurs the 3 seed. Mavs got a 3-1 lead. The Rockets have a nice lead on the Blazers.3-1

You guys think there is a chance that the teams with one win can come back?

Also major props to the Bull's for playing a better technical game than the Celtics.  From all the offensive switching to getting Allen to foul out off the ball...well done.

Well it was a bit more than that...it was an a layup air ball, followed by a missed free throw, followed by a complete misunderstanding of the rules (seriously you NEED TO HIT THE RIM), all combined with Pierce shooting perfectly at the end.

All I gotta say is its clear the Celtics were never true champs (true champs must defend the title).  Look how much trouble they're having with the 8th seed.  They are who I thought they were.

I'm not usually one to get defensive over something as stupid as sports, but how can you say that with a straight face?  They were the best team last year, they beat everybody including Kobe and the Lakers with great teamwork and defense.  This year they are missing their best player (both offensively and defensively) and and another good big man.  Now all they really have for size are Big Baby and Perkins...once one of them gets into foul trouble the whole team suffers.

I agree with you that a true champion team should be able to defend the title, but this is not the same team as last year.  Also...it's not over yet ;) They won the whole damn game last year after going to game 7 with the Hawks.  ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN?!?!?

It was a bit of hyperbole of course, but the main point still stands.  In order to be a true champ you MUST defend your title, otherwise you're just another one hit wonder.

Now granted, they'd certainly be better with their full roster but at the end of the day, they'd still get crushed by King James now that he finally has some decent players around him.

This year's playoffs is gonna be big. My favorite playoff thriller of them all is Bulls-Celtics, which Celtics won in a dramatic way without KG. As for me, Bulls are indeed deserved to be a tough contender and champion someday because even coach Del Negro only a rookie coach, but its definitely a "thumb's up" for him that he deliver his team to the playoffs after last year's absence.

Derrick Rose and Ben Gordon did a lot of stuff out there and deserved to be superstars. Noah, Salmons, Miller, Hinrich and Thomas also did the same thing without Deng. On the other hand, it was Pierce and Allen who are the heroes of the Celtics without KG, with Rondo, Davis, Perkins, House, Marbury and Scalabrine supporting each other, they are a fighting team, defending their crown and hopes to become champions again for the second streak in a row.

Wow.  Not exactly surprised with the result of the Celtic/Magic game but when they were 6 left with three minutes to go I thought they were going to win it.  If Ray Allen had ANY sort of a game we could have won it.  It gives me a little hope for the next games in the series but....not much.

Good to see Rondo get a little energy back.  He's still making a ton of noob mistakes but he definitely has huge potential.

Cav's over Magic in 6

Should be a violent game 3.  That was ridiculous.  While I agree with the ejection, I also agree with Phil Jackson when he complained about the lack of consistency in the calls.  This is a problem throughout the league.

The Boston game was strange as well...they raped the Magic and Pierce only had one field goal and played for only ten minutes.  House was just on fire.  Scal hit a deep three.  Rondo finally is back to being Rondo.  WHAT IS GOING ON.  Very much looking forward to game 3.

As you might of heard Fisher got a 1 game suspension. Turns out the Lakers handled the Rockets without him.
Lakers have a 2-1 lead over the Rockets.

Yao Ming has an injured foot. He is likely to be out of the rest of the playoffs. With this news it is going to be tough to top the Lakers. Without Yao it will be a bit evener matchup at the Center position.

51-31 Lakers are winning at the half. The story of the game is the Lakers Defense.Gasol and Bynum are dominating inside with rebounds and block shots paticular Bynum with blocks. Bynum and Gasol are doing well offensively. Kobe has 8 points. Ariza is the leading scorer for the Lakers with 13.

69-50 lead for the Lakers. Ariza is probably going to be the player of the game for the Lakers for me.His defense is great and his productivity offensively is great.

Here's my prediction:

Cav's over Atlanta in 4
Magic over Boston in 6

Denver does Dallas in 5
La beats Houston in 7

Cav's over Magic in 6
Denver over La in 6

Denver over Cavs in 6

Note - I will not be held liable for lost funds based on these picks.  But if you do win, I won't turn away any VC games gifted my way.

Damn, not too shabby!  Not only did I predict every winner correctly, but I nailed how long each series would go as well.  Only off by one game.  Had Magic over Boston in 6 instead of 7.  Basically, I RULE!!!

The Celtics played poorly, but the Magic shot over 50% both inside and outside the arc...when you shoot that well AND have the most dominant big man in the league you're pretty hard to defend.  The Celtics also made a lot of stupid turnovers and nothing seemed to be going in for them.  Major lolz at Perkins not being able to make a god damn layup.

I have the urge to make some adjustments, but I'll stick it out with my original picks.  Call me crazy, but I don't think Stern and his boys will get their dream match up of Kobe v LaBron:

Cav's over Magic in 6
Denver over La in 6

Denver over Cavs in 6

I went to a Magic game a couple years ago, it was sad. The arena was not anywhere near capacity, and they got their asses handed to them. Now they're about to go all the way to the championship. So it is going to be the Lakers and the Magic in the Finals.

Should be a interesting series. On the Magic side they have the Defensive Player of the year and a pretty good scorer in Dwight Howard. and they have lots of 3 point shooters as well.

Lakers have a excellent Kobe and as well as a nice bench. Ariza is an excellent defender and 3 point shooter.

As for the other 1st Round series, I'm hoping for OKC to take out the Lakers because I just loathe that team, and Milwaukee looks like they want to move on more than Atlanta so they're my pick.  In the second round (as far as series we know about right now), I'm a big fan of old school basketball, so I look forward to the Spurs taking out the Suns and the Celtic hopefully taking out the Cavaliers (I just can't stand Lebron James, as skilled as he is).

Vudu your comments aren't funny.

Broodwars the Thunder has a up tempo style of play. Defence creating offence. Lakers in game 5 had a similar style of play. The crowd of the Thunder can be a problem. I think the key for the Lakers is to restrict points from anybody but Durant and Westbrook. Those 2 will likely get their points. Also the bench needs to produce.

Lakers are heading to the second round to face Jazz or Nuggets.Jazz has a 83-80 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

That was a close finish. 95-94 Lakers.

And the Jazz somehow managed to close out this game to advance to the next round, where they will be slaughtered by the Lakers as Boozer (as he always does against the Lakers) mysteriously vanishes from both ends of the court.

Of course, the Thuggets couldn't let this game (which was already full of technical fouls by them) end without upholding their nickname, so in the closing seconds Thuggets Center Anderson cheap-shotted D-Will and injured his arm with a hard screen.  You know what?  **** you, Denver.

Hmm I think it is going to be the Suns and the Lakers in the Conference finals this year.
I don't think the Lakers are going to have much trouble with the Jazz.
I think the Lakers is going to look back and say that that the Thunder was the team that gave the Lakers the most problems.

I'm as Bulls fan, but damn, livin out in Denver, I've come to kind of appreciate the Thuggets.  Anderson is da man, a relic of an older generation come back to life, and the team made a hell of a run last year.  The loss of their coach this year was just too much though.  It was clear the team was disorganized the past couple months, I didn't expect them to beat Utah.  Hopefully they can pull it together next year.

Anyone here think Lebron won't win again this year, even though he's clearly the best athlete ever at any sport ever in human history?

I think the Celtics vs Cavs series will be determined by the Centers of each teams. Cavs got Shaq I think to help with the Magic. Howard last year was a problem for the Cavs.
I think the Cavs will beat the Celtics in 6 games. The Magic will take the Cavs to 7 games and it will be to close to judge in the 7th game.

Ugh, tonight's game is going to be painful.  Everything was in place for a magical end to a great game: a no-call on the Lakers when Boozer got hacked going to the rim in the final seconds, the Jazz getting a steal on the Lakers, and then a potential game-winner followed by another potential game winner with a put-back.  It just didn't go in.  Hopefully we win Game 4 (if only to show some actual pride and not get swept), which I think is perfectly possible considering we almost got this one and the Lakers lucked into some damn lucky shots in the final minutes.  Then in the off-season maybe for once the Jazz organization will finally address our major problem of not having a prominent shot-blocker.  I find that unlikely, however.

Well Lakers won. The bench of the Lakers hardly scored. They are going to need the bench to produce more points in the coming rounds. It will take some pressure of the starters some.

Lakers beat the Jazz in 4 games. Suns beat the Spurs in 4 games.
Magic beat the Hawks in 4 games.
Only unknown is Cavs and Celtics. That series is tied 2 games a piece.

Magic awaits the winner of that series while Lakers and Suns go at it in the Western Conference Finals.

Alright Cavs or Celtics?
Who will face the Magic?

I am leaning towards the Celtics.

Well that was a depressing end to an otherwise entertaining year (hey, we won 3 more games than I thought we would at the start of the year).  Maybe that lottery pick we have from the Knicks will bear fruit in the  form of that dominant shot-blocker we desperately need. Otherwise, I have no doubt that the Jazz organization will ignore that glaring hole in our lineup as they have every year since Ostertag left the team.

The other big question, of course, is what will happen with Carlos  Boozer now. With the organization as it is and what we saw this year  with Greg Miller willing to slice off vital members of the team for cash, I don't think they're going to go deep into luxury tax to resign  Boozer. That means Millsap will probably be our starting PF next year, with some D-League or Rookie call-up filling in off the bench.

On a side note, if anything great came of this year, it was the emergence of Wesley Matthews, a guy everyone passed on in the draft yet  turned out to be more than worthy of a Starter's Position. He'll be a great addition for years to come. Williams is really starting to come into his own now as well, as is Paul Millsap (who has developed a  stunning amount of range to his game I didn't think possible a few  years ago). Pity his freethrow shooting still sucks.  Sadly, CJ Miles is as random as ever. Fesenko shows promise, though it's the same "promise" he's always shown and never capitalized on. Koufos is a total  wash, sadly (considering he's our only other big guy).  Jeffers will be rejoining the D-League or Europe next year, and Gaines will probably be  brought back to keep that bench warm while the 12 other guys ahead of  him get to play.

I got money on both the celtics and the magic and I got the magic winning it all.

EDIT:

One more game and the celtics face the magic as I originally predicted.

EDIT EDIT:

Celtics take it! Now as I predicted it'll be Celts/Magic. Magic should win it in 6, but I wouldn't be surprised if it came to 7. After that, it's the Lakers baby.

Hmm I like the Magic and Celtics. Lakers beat the Magic in the Finals last year and I think the Celtics beat the Lakers the year before that.So judging by that I think Lakers and Celtics would be a more competitive series.

Lakers still have to get past the Suns though and I think the Lakers will do that in 5 or 6 games.

Any thoughts on where Lebron James is heading? He is a free agent this year.
Title: Re: NBA Playoffs 2010
Post by: Adrock on May 14, 2010, 05:01:17 PM
New Jersey would make the most sense if he leaves. The have the best, most complimentary pieces for Lebron James unless the Knicks somehow pull off that ridiculous deal rumored a couple months ago and sign Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh. It's not really about the money for James and Wade. They both make more money on endorsements than they do playing basketball. It's possible, just unlikely. Ultimately, I think Lebron stays in Cleveland.

I'm rooting for the Lakers. I want Kobe Bryant to have more rings than Shaq if only because Shaq wouldn't let it go after leaving LA. And I think he deserves it. He's been playing injured for quite some time now and he still puts up MVP-caliber numbers.

Sadly, it looks like we're headed for yet another Lakers-Celtics Finals, because we don't have enough of them already.  ::)   I look forward to the endless gushing of TV commentators and retrospectives highlighting "the great rivalry".  :@

C'mon, Phoenix and Orlando!  You're better than this!  Let's actually have an interesting Finals for a change, free of Kobe Bryant and Lebron James.
Title: Re: NBA Playoffs 2010
Post by: BeautifulShy on May 23, 2010, 11:22:00 PM
Well Phoenix has tried to make it a series. They just beat the Lakers. Lakers are up 2 games to 1. Orlando on the other hand is down 3 games.

Lakers couldn't hit their 3 pointers in the 4th quarter and was missing rebounds. Suns kept the Lakers from getting easy twos so the Lakers had to go with threes. Bench didn't really do much.

Edit: Looks like Mike Brown,Cavs coach, was fired the other day. Do you guys think that they are going to bring in Lebron James college coach as the head coach of the Cavs to keep Lebron?
If I recall correctly James is a free agent on July 1st so there is some time.

Edit 2:
Tie game at the end of the 4th quarter.86 all.Magic and Celtics.

Edit 3:Magic beat the Celtics. Celtics are up 3 games to 1. They took it into overtime and won it.

Well after 4 games the series is tied. 2 a piece. Lakers won game 1 and 3. Celtics won games 2 and 4. Celtics bench in game 4 was really good. Bynum hurt his ankel after trying to play through the playoffs. I hope Bynum can play in game 5. The Lakers need his presence in the middle. Mbenga is the backup center and he hasn't played much in the playoffs. Lakers might have to switch around their starting lineup if Bynum can't play. Gasol at Center,Artest at power forward,Odum at Small forward and Kobe at Shooting guard and Fisher at point guard.

It could work but the bench needs to produce as well since they are going to be short handed.

83-79 Close game.Game 7.Celtics vs Lakers.

It has been a long time coming. In this storied rivalry the first time this has happened. The Lakers beat the Celtics in a game 7 in the Finals. It came down to playing tough defence, sharing the ball and hitting clutch free throws.
Lakers came back in the second half after the Celtics had a good lead. Artest I think had the most points and had solid defensive play.Fisher hit 2 three pointers at key junctures. Sasha hit 2 freethrows at the end to clinch it.

Bumping this since the 2011 playoffs have just finished up the first round. Here is the matchups for the second round.

Grizzlies versus the Thunder. The Grizzlies are the 8 seed and are going up against the Thunder which is the 4 seed. Clearly the Grizzlies are going to be the underdog the entire playoffs.
The Mavericks are going up against the Lakers.Lakers are the 2 seed while the Mavs are the 3 seed.I think whichever team wins the rebounds and defence battle will win the series.

Over to the East. The Bulls are going up against the Hawks.Bulls I think will win it.

Finally the main matchup in the East. The Celtics will go up against the Heat.I think it will be a close series. Maybe go to 7 games.I think the Heat will win.

Everybodies predicitions?

Everybodies predicitions?

It'll be another completely dull playoffs topped off by the same dynasties winning the championship as in previous years.  I can't give a damn about a playoffs where the winners are almost certainly going to be the Bulls, the Lakers, the Celtics, or the Heat.  I would have been satisfied with one last championship for the Spurs simply because I have great respect for Tim Duncan and Greg Popovitch, but now the Grizzlies have handed the championship to the same cities that win the championship every year.  *bleh*

Semi-Finals
Thunder vs. Grizzlies: Thunder 4-2 (I want the Grizzlies to win though)

Lakers vs. Mavs: Lakers 4-1

Bulls vs. Hawks: Bulls 4-0

Heat vs. Celtics: Celtics 4-3

Conference Finals
Lakers vs. Thunder: Lakers 4-2

Bulls vs. Celtics: Bulls 4-1

Finals
Bulls vs. Lakers: ? Let me get back to you on this one. I want the Lakers to win but this is probably the most entertaining matchup to expect and I'm still undecided over who will win it. Chicago has a more well rounded team, but LA has better individual players.

but now the Grizzlies have handed the championship to the same cities that win the championship every year.  *bleh*
I feel like this only applies to LA and Boston. The Heat won 1 championship like 5 years ago and Chicago hasn't been relavent since Jordan dominated the entire sport.

I think that the series will go down like this.

Grizzlies vs Thunder. It will be a 6 game series with the Thunder winning 4-2. Lakers versus Mavs will be a 5 game series with the Lakers winning 4-1. Bulls versus Hawks I think will be a 7 game series with the Bulls winning 4-3. Celtics versus Heat will be a 7 game series with the Heat winning 4-3.

Crazy this thread was started in 2009! Anyways...

I'm actually surprised that the Heat beat the Celtics the first game. And very surprised what the Hawks did to the Magic - I thought the Magic were going to actually win it all.

Now that Orlando is out of the mix, it's down to either the Lakers or the winner of the Heat\Celtics series.  Of course Chicago is an awesome young team too, but I just think a little bit too young to pull it out this year.

If I HAD to make a prediction, I'm going with the Lakers, they got the experience, and the best player in the league.
Title: Re: The NBA thread
Post by: Adrock on May 03, 2011, 12:46:03 AM
I didn't think the Magic had a chance of making it out of the east but I expected them to get out of the first round. The problem was that Otis Smith made those trades mid-season, giving an already out of sync Magic team even less time to get it together. I understand he had to do something. Dwight Howard has a foot out the door and if they didn't make some moves, they risked losing him to free agency in 2012 though they would have dealt him to prevent another Shaq-esque fiasco which sent the franchise back like 10 years. He's as good as gone even though he's playing nice and saying he loves Orlando. The team is going no where, especially after absorbing Gilbert Arenas' terrible contract. That was Smith's worst move. Ever. Arenas is unmovable seeing as Smith was the only GM in the league dumb enough take him. His second worst move was including Gortat in that other trade for basically nothing. He was their best bargaining chip and all they got was another awful contract in Turkoglu and the rental of Jason Richardson who's an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Basically, Dwight's days in Orlando are numbered. He's already stated that he'd love to play for LA and fortunately for the Magic, the Lakers really have the best trade available for the Magic: Andrew Bynum. That kid can flat-out play. Consider the numbers he puts up and he's on a team with Bryant, Gasol, and Odom. At best, he's the Lakers' 3rd option and he's still a double double machine. He's a better team defender than Howard and has better footwork even if Dwight is a better all-around player. The Lakers should make that trade 100 times out of 100 even if it completely messes with team chemistry in the short run. Howard is a better long term investment. I'm not a huge Dwight Howard mark or anything. He doesn't guarantee championships. For the Lakers, though, it makes sense. He's healthier (Bynum's knees will always be a question mark) and sells more tickets. For the Magic, it also makes sense. Despite Bynum's health, he's the best player they can get in return and they have no bargaining chips. A young true center or nothing. That's not really debatable.

I dunno WHAT the Bulls' problem was last night. The Hawks have no one to guard Rose, why wasn't he driving on every single possession? A game where Derrick Rose doesn't get to the free throw line is one that he's either not playing right or one where the refs aren't watching. Seriously, Rose should be dropping 40 points and 15 assists a game against the Hawks, easy.

Before the playoffs started, I think all of Chicago was thinking championship or bust, but after a rocky first round against Indiana, a lazy game 1 against Atlanta and the Heat seeming to be putting it all together against Boston, I'd be mildly surprised if they make it past the conference finals. We'll see though.
Title: Re: The NBA thread

I wouldn't doubt the Celtics just yet. The Heat having been playing at their BEST, but they barely put away the Celtics only winning by 9 or less points. When you take foul shots into consideration, that's hardly winning at all.

As soon as the Celtics start to turn up the heat (no pun intended), we'll really see what kind of perseverance Miami has.

Well, the playoffs just got a lot more interesting tonight as the Mavs buried the Lakers to take a 2-0 lead in the series.  The thought of a Finals without the Lakers for ****ing once makes me giddy, as does the thought of all the arrogant and annoying Lakers fans hyperventilating at the thought of the Anointed Ones not making it to the playoffs.  I can just imagine King Stern wringing his hands over trying to make a Dallas/Memphis-Boston/Heat Finals series sell for Television.
Title: Re: The NBA thread
Post by: Adrock on May 05, 2011, 06:37:28 PM
Well, I detest the Mavs so I'm not happy to see the Lakers down 2-0. I really, really just don't want to see Boston or Miami win the championship, especially Miami. Lebron is a beast on the court, but his attitude irks the **** out of me. Jordan and Bryant were both arrogant, yet less annoyingly so.

I think the Lakers can make a comeback. I felt like Laker beat themselves more than the Mavs beat them. The Lakers are the better team in terms of talent. They have better players, but they get lazy. This is a problem they've had all season. Losing to the Cavs? Really? In Games 1 and 2, the Mavs are just playing harder.

Okay what is going on with the Lakers this post season? They strugled versus the Hornets and now they haven't even won a game versus the Mavs. They have to do the impossible.Win 4 games in a row to even make it to the Conference Finals. If the Mavs win then I guess I will have to root for them of the West playoffs to win it. This whole playoffs have been odd. With the Grizzlies winning the first round versus the number 1 seed Spurs. The Hawks beat the Magic in the first round. It just seems like things aren't going how they should. For now in the East I am rooting for the Bulls to win the East. I don't know what happened to the Lakers. They were playing inconsistently all year. I thought it was because they were just not taking the regular series seriously, but judging by their performance in the playoffs, they kind of just got lazy. If they lose in the second round, they'll probably attempt to blow up the roster considering this is Phil Jackson's last season and they have to decide to stick with the Triangle offense or hire a coach who does things entirely differently though I'm not sure there's a coach not named Phil Jackson or Mike Krzyzewski who Bryant respects enough to listen to and the Lakers aren't getting Krzyewski to leave Duke. Bryant and Gasol are probably the only untouchable players. Besides Odom and Bynum, I'm not sure anyone wants to touch some of those contracts, particularly Ron Artest's.

If the Lakers don't make history and gain 4 experience points to raise a level, I'm rooting for the Bulls despite my general dislike of Carlos Boozer.

Well it is official. The Lakers are out of the 2011 playoffs. Got swept by the Mavs. Few things with the Lakers these playoffs. It seemed like they didn't take their opponents seriously. They were not hungry and in each of the first games in the first two rounds they lost. 3 point shooting and closing out quarters wasn't there. If you have a lead you need to know how to close games and not just hope that your lead will save you. As demonstrated in Game 4 versus the Mavs. They need to know how to defend against the 3 and if you can't then you need better 3 point shooters on your side. I think out of the teams in the West the mavs I think has what it takes to win against the East representative in the Finals.

Well, I'm certainly happy for Dallas.  They've been thoroughly humiliated since they were upset by the Warriors years back, so it's good to see them do well and better still to sweep the (not nearly as hated as the Heat) f-ing Lakers.  And meanwhile we have the Playoff-Rookie Grizzlies leading over the overhyped Thunder.  The only way this round of the Playoffs could get any better would be if the Celtics would take out the most-hated Heat and then the Hawks (somehow, though extremely unlikely) find a way to take out the Bulls.  Just imagining a Mavs/Grizzlies vs. Hawks Finals makes me smile.

Congrats to the Grizzlies for storming back from down by 13 points in the first half to win Game 6 against the Thunder by 12 points and giving us our first 7 game series.  As both teams have won on the opposing team's floor, this series could go either way.  However this ends, this has been a great series (certainly the most competitive so far).

The Thunder and Mavs I think the key will be the point guard play and transition defense.

I'm gutted. My Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks have all broken my heart in the last four months. My White Sox are garbage. The only joy I'm getting is that the Cubs are slightly more garbage than the White Sox, which is a sad existence as a Chicago sports fan.

Still, had you told me at the beginning of the year the Bulls would have made it to the conference finals, I would have been pretty pleased. The other thing is the future looks pretty damned bright for the Bulls. They're under the salary cap, all their best players are young and will hopefully get even better, they have a good coach, etc. A lot of pieces are in place here. We'll be back.

The Lakers got a new coach in Mike Brown. From what I hear he is a good defensive coach but not much of a offensive one. I guess maybe the focus will be get points by being a solid defensive team.He was the Head coach of the Cavs and an assistant coach back in 2000-2003 with the Spurs. He was the head coach for the Cavs from 2005 to 2010. I'm going to take a wait and see approach with the new coach. The Lakers either need to get some yound legs or just stick with what they got and just rebuild in a few years.

What a great game tonight! I'm pissed at the Heat, specifically James. But what a great game.

It'll be great once Miami wins at Dallas!

No! That was a TERRIBLE game! The Heat was UP BY 21 POINTS AND THEN WENT PROMPTLY TO SLEEP.

I was so angry. I've never been more angry at a sports game.

I'm glad they lost. I hate the heat.

Mavs are up 3 games to 2 now. I think the Mavs will win the series next game.

God, that was a bad game. The Heat just gave it up at the end. I hate to say it, but the Mavs want it more at this point.

I actually think this series goes the full 7 games, but I do think (and hope) the Mavs will win.  So far, this series has been going exactly as I thought it would.

This rest of this series is going to be stressful.  I (along with 99% of the country) want the Mavs the win but I have a terrible feeling tragedy will strike them yet again.  Either way though, this series has given me a new appreciation for the Dallas Mavericks and especially Dirk.  Like my Celtics (at least before the Perk trade...), this team has great chemistry and knows how to play good team ball.  The Heat have their big three but little else (Chalmers has hit some big shots, but he can't really create his own offense) and I hate to see that style of basketball succeed.

Furthermore, these playoffs have made me lose a lot of respect for Wade.  It seems like Lebron's sense of entitlement has rubbed off a little on him.  He's made a number of flops and dirty plays, and like Lebron he expects every call to go his way.  Again, like Lebron, he's allowed to throw temper tantrums at the refs without getting a technical.  I just don't like what that kind of attitude is doing to the league.  The again, maybe he's always been like that and I'm only noticing it now that the Heat have gotten a lot more exposure.

Anyway, go Mavs! Dirk and Jason deserve their rings.  Lebron will have more chances.

The Heat is giving up in the 4th quarter, which they need to stop doing. At least today's game will be in Miami, but since it is, they have no excuse to screw up. Labron needs to start playing ball--he only scored 7 points in Tuesday's game and he was pretty score-free on Thursday, too (just two points in the 4th quarter). The rest of the team, including Bosh and Wade, were trying to make up for it, but the Mavs just went nuts toward the end.

The problem is that nobody's adequately covering Norwitzky. The dude's a beast.

To be fair, there's no such thing as "adequately covering Norwitsky".  I've seen that guy make completely contested 3 point shots that dedicated 3-point shooters can't make wide open.

I'm also in the camp that's losing respect for Wade due to how he has acted in this series.  I read the other day that he and Lebron were mocking Dirk when he was very sick in Game 4 and played anyway (like a true champion would).  That's something I would expect from classless Lebron, but I'd always seen Wade as a pretty stand-up guy until then.

And yeah, I don't want the league to get the impression it can just buy a championship through backroom deals, so I hope the Heat lose.  The veterans on the Mavs have shown that they want and deserve it more.

Congratulations to the Mavs!  Really, well done beating the media and head office-loved Miami Heat.  It's always nice to see the team that wanted Championship the most and IMO deserved it the most get it.  Taking Lebron James down a peg is just a delightful bonus.  Plus, I just have this image in my head of David Stern scowling in his office like the Grinch on Christmas Morning with his feet in the snow.   ;D

Not super-happy, but seriously, the Heat were playing like amateurs tonight. The Mavs played great, especially toward the end--they just locked out the Heat, and Labron didn't do crap the whole game. Superstar player my ass. Good job, Mavericks.

Lebron showed perhaps his greatest weakness in this series.  When he's not getting the superstar calls he's used to, he shuts down.  I honestly don't think Lebron has the skills to be a great champion (yet), nevermind to be called "the best ever."  What he has is strength, speed, and athleticism.  He is a very inconsistent shooter (from anywhere, including free throws) and has NO post game at all.  His success comes from his "bull in a china shop" strategy which relies on pure strength and speed to penetrate and finish at the rim, but when the calls don't go his way he seems to lose confidence in that technique.  Compound that with a poor shooting night and all of a sudden he's scoring next to nothing in the 4th quarter.

What he does have going for him, aside from pure athletic prowess (which I admit is extremely important), is fantastic defense, great passing, the best fast break in the league (although that comes from his athleticism), and the occasional hot shooting night.  These skills alone are enough to make him one of the best in the league, but he needs to shore a lot of things before he becomes legendary.  As it stands, despite being bigger and stronger than Wade, he is MUCH more easily shut down.

Well the NBA Draft is happening tomorrow. I really don't pay attention to the NCAA basketball game so I'm not really aware on all the players.  I will say this. The Lakers need to pick up a point guard and a solid 3 point shooter as well as a good defender in one. Someone like Ariza when he was on the Lakers a few years back.

Lakers have the 41st,46th,56th, and 58th picks. All in the second round of the draft.
Here is a link for the NBA 2011 Draft.

I don't follow basketball, but as a Cleveland sports fan I'm glad the Cavs have a couple of high picks, even though everyone says this is a pretty weak draft.

If the Lakers want a solid multi-position guy off the bench, they could probably sign Tracy McGrady for the veteran's minimum which I believe he got last year from the Pistons. He literally plays 3 positions, including point guard. McGrady is no where near the same player he used to be and there's always the risk of injuries because of his knee but he had a decent season last year (I don't think he got injured) and for the minimum, the Lakers could do a lot worse. I'm sure he would sign the minimum for a chance to play for a legitimate contender and NOT for a rebuilding Piston team. In terms of sheer talent, he's still an upgrade from both Blake and Fisher, probably even combined.

Apparently, the Lakers are interested in Nuggets point guard Raymond Felton and have been for a few years now which makes you wonder why they didn't try to sign him last year instead of Steve Blake. Felton has 1 year left and is owed like $7 million and doesn't want to play for behind Ty Lawson.

Speaking of Nuggets players, they're trying to resign Wilson Chandler who is a restricted free agent but he also apparently doesn't really want to play for Denver (it's a small market and he seemed lost in George Karl's offense). If the Lakers could pull off a sign and trade, they should offer Lamar Odom (who's value will never be higher) for Felton and Chandler. The Lakers lose an extremely talented and versatile SF/PF for a good point guard and a work-in-progress small forward. It actually works for both teams because each team fills specific needs. Odom is a starter on most NBA teams and Denver needs a power forward with Kenyon Martin an unrestricted free agent and not the player he used to be while the Lakers get younger with a talented point guard and an up and coming small forward though both Felton and Chandler are currently lesser individual players than Lamar Odom. If the Lakers pull that trade off AND the oft rumored Andrew Bynum for Dwight Howard trade, the NBA should just cancel the next 3 seasons and award the Lakers those Larry O'Brien trophies.... I like the Lakers and all but I don't even know if I could stand to watch the NBA at that point. It's no fun.
