Title: Help w/link cables plz

I'm having troubles w/the link cable I'm trying to use to trade pokemon w/my sister. I have Crystal version and she has the Silver version. She has a regular GBA and I have the SP (which I don't think should matter). We've tried the Ninteno brand cable it didn't work and now we've tried a third party cable and we can't get that to work. It says "you're friend is not ready" or some crap like that. Any advice would be much appreciated.
