Title: REVIEWS: WarioWare: Snapped!
Post by: NWR_Neal on April 10, 2009, 02:38:48 PM
A fun game that takes longer to set up than it does to play.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewArt.cfm?artid=18164

WarioWare:  Snapped!, one of the DSiWare launch titles, doesn't feel like a game. It feels a lot more like a tech demo that shows off how to use the DSi Camera in a game…assuming perfect playing conditions. That's not to say the game isn't fun; it just means that the biggest challenge of the game is configuring the camera properly.

Snapped!, like other WarioWare games before it, uses its system's new technology—in this case the DSi Camera—and crafts numerous microgames around this technology using a unique sense of humor. This iteration only has 20 microgames split into four groups. Each group of five games is played linearly, and the order of the games never changes. One of the four groups is designed for two players on one system, which is a lot of fun, but makes the single player experience even more lacking because five of the games require two.

The games are played by moving the silhouette of the player's head and/or arms on-screen. This is accomplished by going through a lengthy setup process each time before you start a mini-game set. You have to be in the correct lighting environment with the proper contrast behind you. Then, as long as the light doesn't change and you remain in the exact position you began in, the controls will work correctly. It reminds me of how I had to search for the perfect lighting conditions play my original model Game Boy Advance.

It's a shame that the setup process is so overwrought because when the game works, even partially so, it is fun and amusing. It just doesn't last that long. The best part is that while you play the games, which range from moving your hands to collect coins to playing peek-a-boo with a baby, the game takes pictures of you that are then put together at the end in an amusing manner. Sadly, you can't transfer these pictures anywhere outside of the game.

Surprisingly, the only part of the game that keeps track of a high score is the credits sequence, in which you have to move your head from side to side to collect the oncoming names and titles. You get scored for how many of the names and titles you collect. This is a nice diversion, but nothing more.

WarioWare: Snapped! is a lot of fun, but it never really goes anywhere: it is just a demo of what the DSi Camera can do. You can play through all of the game's content in about ten minutes, and the only joy in going back is if you want to show it off to a friend or see what goofy pictures the game takes of you while you play it. If any of that sounds appealing to you, then go ahead and buy it, but don't expect anything long-lasting.

Pros:

  • When it works, the game is a lot of fun
  •
  • Credits game is a fun diversion

  •        Cons:

  • Game setup takes way too long
  •
  • Not a lot of content
  •
  • You can't export the pictures it takes of you

  •                Graphics:  7.0
It has very simple graphics, but nothing ever looks bad and everything runs smoothly.

                   Sound:  7.0
The music is the usual bouncy WarioWare music. It fits the game well, but there's not a whole lot of variety.

                   Control:  4.0
When everything is properly set up, it works. However, the odds of that happening with regularity while on-the-go are pretty slim.

                          Gameplay:  4.0
There's not much to it, and every mini-games boil down to moving your head and/or arms like a fool. It's an interesting concept, but it never feels fully realized.

           Lastability:  2.0
The game is about ten minutes long, and the only replay value lies in the comedic factor of the pictures it takes of you.

           Final:  4.0
WarioWare: Snapped! is nothing more than a fun experiment. That, combined with the arduous setup process, makes this game lackluster. The only thing it has going for it is the novelty value and the humor that comes out of it.

I have yet to find a place in my house where I can play this game... It's the most frustrating thing ever.

Apparently I need to paint a wall black and put a spot light on my face or something.

I can play it at work  under the bright fluorescent lighting though.

It is almost impossible for me to play this in my dorm room.

If anyone can recall the hat mini-game (move your head and get a hat to land on it), I would always beat it, but the hat would never be on my head.

Ouch. So much for that. Thanks for taking the hit for us on that one, nron10. I'm a bit surprised Nintendo let a game slip that has this many technical issues. Most we features work well. I wonder if they rushed it. I'll bet they could have made the game read better with more time. Or maybe the cameras just aren't good enough for that type of game.

Oh well, I guess when I get my DSi I can be sure not to waste 500 of my free points on this.

I got it - it's neat.  I'm not sure about the part where it says the mini games always come up in the same order - it seems randomized when I've done it.

Is it worth 500 points?  Not really.  It's neat to show it off to others and show them what the DSi can do.  It really should have been a free download - it *is* fun to show it to others, and in that respect, it could work similar to Wii Sports.

Technically it is free with the whole 1000 points offer. Wiisports works damn well and from this review WWSnapped is ALMOST broken game.

I guess you get what you pay for ?? Which is disappointing because a number of NES games on Virtual Console I found worthy of $5 as well as Defend Your castle.

Perhaps they should have made it a free download and given everyone 500 points. ;)

I bought it but after playing I wish I hadn't bought it. At least I still have WarioWare: Touched.

Hogwash!  At best, you've paid an opportunity cost because you didn't use those points to download something else.  At worst, you've paid for the 1000 points anyway in the inflated system price.

After further playtime I have to wonder why this wasn't a 200 point title. Half of the micro games don't work right away and aren't even fun.

To be fair pyoro(?) existed in other games and is a very simple mini-game, and the other 200 point title Master of Illusion Express funny faces is a direct rip of the same mini-game from the retail game. It's 500 points because Nintendo invested some development time into this.

But regardless this has to be one of the most unfriendly portable titles ever. I remember hearing that most of the eye toy games had this same exact problem, so I'm not really surprised that these issues exist with Snapped!.

It no surprise that this game ended up being underwelming.  It was made by a small spinoff team who had to rush it out for the DSi launch in Japan last fall.  The main Wario Ware team on the other hand has been busy working on the upcoming WarioWare: Myself, which comes out in Japan later this month.

Needless to say, that game will end up much better.

What system is WW: Myself for, Wii?

First I heard of it. He may be referring to Made in Ore. It's a WarioWare game (no English name yet) that was announced for the DS back in October and set to come out in Japan sometime this year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made_in_Ore

Yeah that's the one. April 29th for Japan and TBA for North America. No mention of anywhere else.

So do you think Snapped was more of a demo/proof of concept piece for Made in Ore?

Possibly, though it seems more likely that it was created just to have something for the launch of the DSiWare service.

It could be a similar idea to how on the original DS you got a demo copy of Metroid Prime Hunters' multiplayer mode.

I'm glad Nintendo did that, saved me from wasting $35 on the full game (that demo sucked and supposedly the real game is similar).

Not if you take into account that those 500 points will then be missing for Aquite or Code.
