Title: Lindy Unboxes the Nintendo DSi
Post by: NWR_Lindy on April 07, 2009, 03:23:10 AM

The day that NWR receives a new system from Nintendo is always one filled with mirth, celebration, and life-affirming optimism.  Director Jon Lindemann shares his unboxing of the new system in this video blog, and gives his thoughts on his new toy.

Be sure to read the DSi impressions already posted by Zach and Neal, and look for more coverage of DSiWare games in the days and weeks ahead.

Your bedroom is boring.

At least his room is clean. I'd have to do a videocast in my living room because of the poor status my room is in.

The lights and mirror are weird. Funny about how it went off at the post office.

"You can see a little bit of the reflection there"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I'm bald too :(

I hope the larger screen makes playing Moon easier.

Your video is not helping my willpower keep me from buying one with my birthday money. The black one looks so nice too.

Yeah, that room is boring, it's the extra bedroom though.  There's not a lot in there.  Trust me, my actual bedroom is a disaster.

Jonathan "Lex Luthor" Linde(r)mann looks tired. Get some sleep.

I've been wanting to get a DSi, but the only thing that's holding me back is that should I look for a GBA SP and trade in my DS Lite, or keep my DS Lite so I can play my GBA games.

THAT SHIRT IS F-ING AWESOME!!!  but I agree this video is not helping me resist buying one either.  sh** they're already available...  better start saving up.  (one of the main reasons that I ever considered buying one is because the screens are supposed to be bigger, but honestly they don't seem much bigger to me...  apparently that doesn't matter much because I'm still putting money aside for my THIRD DS)

Good vid.

Is it strange that I want the box more than I want the DSi?

I'm curious how the speakers compare to the Lite's.  Also, since the volume is controlled by buttons now, what's the gradient like?  Is it large enough to be uncomfortable when using earphones?  Is it still possible to have the speakers just barely audible in a quiet room?

This concerns me as well; well this and the power button. I wonder why they moved it.

They like to move around buttons and switches to make the system feel new.

I imagine these tertiary inputs simply get placed wherever there's room left after all the important stuff is nailed down.  They don't have a lot of leeway to move the D-pad, after all.  Maybe the camera hardware and wiring forced them to move the power button.

They move them to justify higher price tags to cover the cost of building a new factory to make these forms and motherboards.

I know on my Lite I'm a little worried that my right hand could hit the power button enough to turn off the system. I'm a southpaw so I hold the DS primarily with my right hand on stylus intensive games and my hand tends to press against the power button at times. So I'm glad they moved that switch.

Yeah, I was up super-late the night before.  I look like a zombie.

I'll check on the volume.  I can tell you that the speakers are loud.

I'm sure whoever has a DSi will talk about any games they download.  Jon is the only one I know of so far.

I got Aquia and Birds 'n' Beans, Jonny. The former is an actual puzzle game (sure ain't pretty, tho) and the latter is a cell phone game.

He's just trying to get hits from the zombie craze that has been storming consoles this generation. Maybe the RSS feed should say "Zombie Luthor Eats DSi Box's Brains"

So I assume that first box (with the mirror and cheering) is only for the review systems sent out to the press? I want that.

On a side note, how long was this site in existence before you got companies to start sending you free stuff?

Just got my DSi today. I like the way the buttons feel and how the control pad clicks but I'm still getting used to the power button move and the shoulder buttons that stick out a little bit. I think the pictures it can take look pretty good.

Yup, the cheering box was just for DSi's sent to the press.

We've been getting free stuff forever.  I would say probably since 2000.

Wasn't that because somebody got a hold of a great contact list from back in the day? I forgot already but I remember it was mentioned on the anniversary 'cast.

Congrats on getting the DSi.

What you don't see is the literally waist-high pile of crap that's just off-camera.  I had to make the room presentable for the video.

I had two friends who kept their dorm room floor covered with close to a foot of crap. The only clear area was by the door and random patches they jumped to to get around unless they felt like wading through it. Yet if they knew a girl was visiting they could get it tidy in three minutes flat.
Crazy.

I liked having the start and select buttons easily reachable as secondary inputs if needed on the fat DS... Was pretty useful when I played the GBA version of Duke Nukem on it since that way I could quickly hit select to change the weapons.

One problem, you did not have BucketHat. If you had BucketHat then your vid would have been sweet perfection incarnate. Until then Pale is one jump ahead...

I never thought of my baldness as a gimmick, but I'll roll with it.  I consider my baldness the physical equivalent of the Wii Remote...it draws you in because of the novelty, but then the fun you have with the game keeps you playing.

LOL

A gimmick is not necessarily a bad thing. By definition, it does not have a negative connotation, but many people tend to associate it as being a "cheap gimmick", or rather a ploy to attract people to a bad product. A gimmick can also be some characteristic or quality which makes an object or a person easily recognized and/or remembered. Pale's bucket hat, your baldness, the Wii Remote... these are all gimmicks, but that is in no way a bad thing.

Exactly, "In marketing language, a gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries.". It usually has a negative association, but a gimmick is just something that helps a product stand out.
