Title: Backlog suggestions?
Post by: NWR_DrewMG on April 06, 2009, 02:34:41 PM
Lately I've been really enjoying playing some backlog titles on PS2 - games I always meant to play but never got around to. I'm most of the way through the original Ratchet & Clank, and I finished the first God of War game a few weeks back. I've got Silent Hill 2 queued up for my 360, as well.
I'm thinking Sly Cooper might be next.
Okay, so what other PS2 games would you suggest? Not a big fan of RPGs or Metal Gear Solid games. FPSes are okay, but I prefer sci-fi adventure FPS to military-competetive FPS.
I also have a 360 (and therefore can play some Xbox 1 games), Wii (and therefore can play Cube games), DS Lite (and therefore can play GBA games).
Okay, so recommend me some classics from last gen that I might have missed.

Personal favorite PS2 games:
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy (dungeon crawler) Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (dungeon crawler) Black (FPS) Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (platformer) Maximo (platformer)

I played through Baldur's Gate: DA several times. The sequel wasn't great. Did you try out Champion's of Norrath?
I tried Jak & Daxter a few years back and didn't love it, but I may give it another shot.
Maximo is a game that I owned at one point but held onto it for years without ever really playing it so eventually I sold it. This is why I've stopped collecting games, because it tends to lead to that behavior.

GC:
Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 Skies of Arcadia (I don't like RPG's but I love that game...though I never beat it cuz it's too hard) That one game where your a chick with the camera and it plays like Zelda. Can't remember the name and too lazy to go find it. Prince of Persia 1 & 2

Sands of Time was played years ago.
Does Timesplitters/TS2 have a proper single player campaign, or is it mainly mutiplayer focused? I always liked TS1, but only ever played it Multiplayer.
Ico and SotC are some of my all time favorites, but I've played them both through several times already.

Stogi the Wrestling rapper game is Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam:Fight for New York. The girl with the camera and is similar to zelda is called Beyond Good&Evil.
My GC recomendations: I Ninja it is a pretty fun and challenging game. Eternal Darkness:Sanity's Requiem. Unique sanity system. Odama:Challenging RTS and Pinball hybrid. You control your soldiers with voice commands the GC controller controls your flippers.Unique and challenging game.

Eternal Darkness is another one I played through years ago, as well as Beyond Good & Evil. I've heard virtually nothing good about Odama.

The single player is awesome in both of those and even in Future Perfect.
If you enjoy the idea of time travel, then you'll enjoy the campaign. You fight a lot of different people/creatures/robots in a lot of different settings and time periods. It's perhaps one of the most well made FPS series ever created.
PLAY THEM NOW! (Oh and there is coop I think in the later ones)

Good call. Def Jam: Fight for New York was a pretty good rasslin game.
The Champions of Norrath games are pretty good, very similar to Baldur's Gate:DA

I liked Dark Legacy much better on the GameCube. If I recall correctly, it's inventory system was a bit more fleshed out. It was to the point where you could horde items and power-ups to use later, whereas the PS2 version was more akin to Gauntlet Legends on the Dreamcast--items were automatically activated upon pickup.

I actually like the second one better even though the first one is a better game.

Since I don't know what you have played or what your tastes are, I'm just going to recommend some GameCube games which I enjoyed.
Super Smash Brothers Melee It's different enough from SSBBrawl that I'd say it's worth checking out.
Luigi's Mansion AKA the point when Luigi stopped being a neglected character. It's short but it is enjoyable while it lasts, the controls are solid, and the real challenge is going for a high score.
Super Mario Sunshine I don't care what you might have heard about this, it's still a great game that's just a little rough around the edges.
Metroid Prime 1 and 2 The atmosphere that these games manage to create is simply incredible.
Wario World This game might be short and simple but it is quite enthralling, and the stages are pretty varied with the small pure platforming segments tucked away under the ground panels. I suppose that structure is a bit like Mario Sunshine, but there’s nothing wrong with going with what works.
Battalion Wars The game brings you a lot closer to the heat of battle than the average strategy game. And with direct control over one of your units, you really feel like you're causing some damage, rather than just watching a staged battle. Battalion Wars is a great mix of strategy and action, but you'll need to get past the first couple of missions before the real battles begin.
TimeSplitters 2 "Heir apparent to Goldeneye." Believe it.
TimeSplitters Future Perfect It's a little rough around the edges feature-wise, but the gameplay is enhanced and it has more variety than before. The story mode is a bit short but it has some epic moments when Cortez meets up with his past and future self. There’s lots to do in the Arcade League and Challenge modes; going for high-scores is, well, challenging! The stage builder is a lot more robust and is capable of creating fairly complex arenas, I've spent many a sleepless night just building away.
Burnout 2 A pretty solid arcade racer that rewards dangerous driving by awarding you speed boosts for driving close to traffic, performing stunts and drifts, etc. The crash mode is also a ton of fun.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door It can sometimes get a bit tedious due to its simplicity, but it is still an engaging RPG which will magically suck up all of your free time until you complete it.
Tales of Symphonia The more action-oriented battle system kind of reminds me of Smash Brothers in the way that the controls are set up, and with how the movement is mostly two-dimensional. Although most battles aren’t really difficult, what makes you always try to play at your best is the grade you earn from performing well. The story is pretty clichéd and conventional, though the random skits which pop up every now and then are a nice touch.
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour This is a solid golf game, despite that the swing system is exactly the same as NES Open Tournament Golf for the, uh, NES. If you like both golf and Mario, then this game is worth owning. If you like one but not the other, then you may want to consider something else.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Awesome title, that. How many game titles have not one, but two exclamation points? Not enough, that's for sure!
Mario Superstar Baseball The best thing about this game is that it contains 32 characters, so you'll see a lot of playable faces not available in many other games. The controls are a bit imprecise and take some getting used to, but work fine once you do. Fielding can sometimes be troublesome though, as movement is a bit slippery and there's no way to switch control of fielders. Still, it's nothing you can't anticipate with practice. Though if you have the Wii sequel then you probably needn't bother.
Super Mario Strikers This game isn’t “Mario” enough in that it doesn’t offer up enough twists on the gameplay and the characters don’t have very distinct personalities. Even so, the gameplay is solid, and the 4-on-4 makes for a fast action-packed football game. I prefer this over the extremely contrived Mario Strikers Charged on Wii.
Mario Party 4, 5, 6, 7 Everyone should own at least one Mario Party game... You never know when a party is going to break out! I suppose there's no reason for you to own more than one though, and I would recommend 7 as it has the most features.
Are there too many Mario games on the list? Don't be silly, of course not.

There are a lot of Dance Dance Revolution games on the PS2. I love those games.

Unfortunately the LCD lag on my set kills DDR on my PS2, but I still have my game and slightly-more-expensive-than-default pads in case I want to take them into a different room.
As far as your suggestions go, Mop_It_Up, I've already tried or finished most of the games you listed, as I was a lot more hardcore in my Nintendo love during the Gamecube days.
Tales of Symphonia is one I see recommended a lot, but I really don't have the patience for RPGs anymore, despite how often I seem to try to test that theory.

This topic is a joke. ;) You tell us to help you find games to play on your PS2 but everyone that's been named you've already played? How about throwing us a bone in the form of listing off the games you've played?

All the GC ones listed I've played (or decided I don't want to play) but not all the PS2 ones.
Here's a list of the major first party PS2/GC games I've already played and decided I'm done with, or don't like enough to continue.
God of War Ratchet & Clank Ico Shadow of the Colossus Rygar Metroid Prime 1 & 2 Super Mario Sunshine Zelda: Wind Waker Zelda: Four Swords Mario Kart Double Dash Mario Golf Mario Tennis Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance Dragon Quest VIII Jak & Daxter GTA III / Vice City Castlevania for PS2 Metal Gear Solid Katamari Damacy
And I'm sure there's plenty more. But the PS2 had thousands of games. I'm trying to get some suggestions that are a little more unknown. I'm a fan of Action RPGs (as long as they're not too heavy on the reading), platformers, Football games, and adventure titles.

Fine then, one suggestion: Battalion Wars. Just get it. I'd say it's an obscure game that nobody's ever heard, based on nobody I ever recommend it to has ever heard of it.
