Title: RetroActive Poll #5 - Remix Edition!!!
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on April 03, 2009, 01:18:09 PM
*Not available on Virtual Console.  See the buying guide below for details on each game and its availability/pricing.

Your favorite runners-up and also-rans from previous polls are back for another chance!  All five games in this poll have appeared before and received some votes, but not enough to win.  This time, one of them will come away with a victory.  The losers of this poll may reappear later, but probably not for a while.  The next poll will have a completely fresh slate.  The current plan is to have a "remix" poll every fifth time (so #5, #10, etc).  If this works out well, I may discontinue the practice of carrying over the second-place game each week, due to the overlap with the remix polls.

Regarding the selection of games for this poll: major factors were the number of votes received in earlier polls, diversity of platforms, cost/availability, and length.  We've had some long games recently (Eternal Darkness, Secret of Mana), so it seems like a good time to have a shorter game that we can delve into more fully in a reasonable amount of time.  The decision of one week or two will depend on the game selected and whether we think it can sustain multiple weeks of discussion.

You will not be able to view poll results until after voting, so please vote for the game you honestly want to play and discuss the most.  Feel free to lobby undecided voters in this thread.

This will be a tough vote for me.  I'm leaning towards either Ninja Spirit or Drill Dozer.  I already own Cho Aniki and Wave Race 64, so those would be convenient but not as interesting, personally, even though I like both of them.  Then there's SGnG... I feel like Henry Hatsworth has been training me for it.

Oh Jeez--Ninja Spirit or Super Ghouls N Ghosts?  What to choose?!

You will not be able to view poll results until after voting, so please vote for the game you honestly want to play and discuss the most.  Feel free to lobby undecided voters in this thread.

I still think this rule sucks.  I'm afraid I'm going to have to hold off on voting and later get someone who's already voted to let me know the current results.

I really want Ninja Spirit to win because I'm sure no one's ever played it in the history of mankind.  But I feel Super GNG probably has a better shot at winning and I'd much rather it win than any of the other three games.

I have it on VC, it was alright at best. Seems like one of those games where it is a quality title but was rare so the hype factor went through the moon.

Go team Ninja Spirit! w00t!

Just vote for it vudu. It got a slight following last poll so just hop on and lobby for your life!

Vote Ninja Spirit for the Director of the Department of Retro Security! We need to secure the memory of overlooked old games for the next generation.
A vote Ninja Spirit is a vote for the future.
Vote the Ninja, because it's got Spirit!
Vote Ninja because there are no Pirates to vote for!

Hi, I'm Stratos, and I approve this message.

I tried lobbying last time.  I'm the only one who said anything of any substance about any of the games and it didn't help.  :(

Besides, I'm worried that Wave Race 64 is going to make a strong competitor.  Not only is it the most recent console title (I've already theorized N64 and GCN titles have an advantage over older games) it's also the "odd-man-out" as far as the four titles go.  Ninja Spirit, Super GNG and Drill Dozer are all 2D platformers and Cho Aniki is a 2D shooter.  We're going to wind up splitting our votes amongst these games and Wave Race 64 is going to walk away the winner by default.  :(

Then tell everyone to vote for Ninja Spirit.
You not voting for it will throw our campaign off. What would it look like if the campaign manager to a major candidate admitted they didn't vote for the person they were working to get into office?

Ninja Spirit for RetroActive '05!

Also, Jonny, I think we should keep the 2nd place returning feature even if this does work out. I like that aspect of the polls.

So then I'm assuming that you are voting for Cho Aniki then considering they have probably come close to talking about that game enough times and long enough to fill an entire podcast with their words regarding it.

I wouldn't mind it being a Retroactive game, I actually found it to be fun (strange but fun). What is funny is that with all its homoerotic tendencies it at least has a female protagonist which is a step up from most games!

That seems a bit too absolute (what is this, the Internet?). Did I post nothing of any substance in favor of the majority favorite?

I'm voting for Ninja Spirit - not to appease you, of course, but to have a chance to play what sounds like a fun (and not skull-bashingly difficult) 2D action-platformer.

MAN BEAM !!!!!!!!!!!
Title: Re: RetroActive Poll #5 - Remix Edition!!!
Post by: NovaQ on April 05, 2009, 06:53:18 PM
What's this? Man-beams tied with Ninja? Never!!

To help better inform those unlearned in the ways of the ninja, I channel the words of vudu:

I'd like to nominate Ninja Spirit.  It's a platformer for the TG-16 meaning it's perfect because no one's ever played it before.  ;D  It's fairly similar to Ninja Gaiden, but much more playable from what I hear (read:  it doesn't have a bat**** insane difficulty level).

It has been recommended by Jeremy Parish (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3159515) as well as our own Steven Rodriguez (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/vcArt.cfm?artid=13461).

Fun fact:  It was the first game to ever receive a perfect 10 from EGM.

Another point that Ninja Spirit has over Man-Beamage is that NS hasn't been talked about repeatedly over several podcasts, so a discussion of it by the RFN crew wouldn't feel as redundant.

The ninja's soul still burns. I mean spirit. Vote NS.

Well it was a tough choice, but having just completed Cho Aniki the other day it seems right to vote for it! Everyone should give it a shot, it's a decent shoot em up, relaxing more than anything else, and the music is fucking fantastic. It's an easy game to crack jokes about but there's a good game there (my advice for newcomers is to forget the female protagonist and always use the male). Levels are repetitive, and it took me a while to get used to the beam mechanic of it firing when you let go of the fire button, but I feel the game succeeds ultimately in spite of its flaws.

There's a certain flow to it that is unusual - only having 2 lives for a given level, and all the levels are pretty long with at least one miniboss and a main one at the end mean plenty of failed attempts when the difficulty ramps up. Also what is it with all the T16 shooters having adjustable ship speed? Despite there being a number of speed levels (I think there are 4 or so), I couldn't find one that suited me, there was only too slow or too quick. On the plus side the enemies you come across are brilliantly designed, essentially they are inanimate objects given human features in a surreal mashup, and the backrounds are suitably strange too - my favourite is the cathedral exterior that must be several tens of miles long!

Anyway maybe this is the wrong thread to put these thoughts, but anyway it'd be good to hear some hopefully serious discussion about the game so I recommend voting for it and giving this game a chance! Not even gonna touch the homoerotic stuff, I'll just say that the continue screen countdown is good for a laugh.

I don't see anyone on the boards talking about Drill Dozer, but it's the title I would most like to see.

Drill Dozer would be the perfect choice because it is:
-- unique and interesting
-- still available cheaply
-- portable, making it easy to play while on the move (or on the toilet)
-- one of the GBAs "hidden gems" that never got the attention it probably deserved
-- better to play GBA titles now while we still can, since the system is no longer supported with the DSi

C'mon portable fans!  Let's give this title a shot!

Cho Aniki (TurboCD)  11 (25.6%)

No, Cho Aniki is back in second. Come on and vote for it people. It's a good shooter, and I am sure a lot of people don't want to play a game that is difficult for no reason other than to be difficult (no offense to the game, I don't want to pay for a game that will just frustrate me more than entertain me).

It's a SNES game, 800 points. Cho Aniki is 900 points (it's a import title, although why it's an extra 300 points instead of 100 or 200 is odd).

Damn, SNES game

The US equivalent of 800 points. (http://catalog.ebay.com/Super-Ghouls-N-Ghosts_045496330026_W0QQ_fifptsZ1QQ_pcatidZ2QQ_pidZ5244QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em271)  ;D

Unless you want a brand new copy, in which case be prepared to cough up $100+.

Because Cho Aniki is a TG-CD game. The TG-CD games are always 800 points while the regular TG-16 games are 600.

Looks like Super Ghouls is going to win.  Just how hard is it?  I remember renting it in 5th grade and liking it, but its been a long time.  I haven't actually played any of the games in prep for the show, and I may play this one if it wins.  Has anyone beat it recently?

I never played it back in the day and played and beat it for the first time on the VC. It's not THAT hard, it has a very addictive style I think. I'm not quite sure what to compare it with difficulty wise, but for me it's comparable to R-Type 3 in the way your goal is simply to get to the next checkpoint and it is essentially never conceivable of getting through multiple levels on your first go. Ever. Tougher than Megaman I and II if that helps. The spacing between checkpoints are just right so that they're practically all a big challenge but not too repetitive or slow moving (this is something Cho Aniki is guilty of). Every minute of this game is packed with enemies and events that necessitate a lot of skill to overcome. There are practically unlimited continues which is handy, and the game is fun enough that repeating it the second time round doing a more difficult version is still entertaining. The biggest problem for me was the last but one boss, I don't know why I had so much trouble with it but regardless I don't ever remember feeling that the game's difficulty was cheap. It's doable.

Seriously though, playing through this in just 1 week? It must've taken me about 2 months to fully complete (to be fair most of it was that bloody boss - the final boss was peanuts compared to him) and I was on the lowest difficulty!

Great game. Still think Cho Aniki should be given a chance, it is definitely not a mediocre shooter as someone else called it.

I was really pissed about that. i worked to get to that point. Hours and hours and so much stress and I need a key. KEY WHAT KEY !!!!!!! Back to level 1. I wasn't to upset at first because I had gold armor but I got to level 2 and said the hell with the game and traded it into gamestop.

biggest waste of time ever.

Less than 2 hours to go and it's a tie between Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Cho Aniki. I would like both to eventually be talked about, but I am supporting Cho Aniki in this one and urge anybody who hasn't voted yet to vote for it and give the game a chance.

CHO ANIKI!

I might sit out of another round if Ghouls 'n Ghosts wins. I wasn't coaxed back to Secret of Mana last time, and I don't know if one of cruelest games ever is something I want to play.

I might buy Cho Aniki regardless of the outcome at this point. I almost bought it the other night...

Cho Aniki has already been discussed to death.  A vote for Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a vote for progress.

Damn, Super Ghouls 'n Ghost won. I probably won't be joining in then. I don't feel like paying $8 for a game that I won't enjoy because the developer made it overly difficulty just for the sake of being difficulty and ruins the fun.

Well, I'm happy.  ;D  At least the system isn't totally broke.  Hopefully there are at least 12 others out there who share my joy.

I'll download the game tonight or tomorrow.

I'm interested to see how they stretch discussion past one show. I may just skip over that segment. Though I'm not going to whine about the system being broke because I don't care for the game. I'll at least respect all but one of the voters regarding the game because that particular person doesn't appear to respect others in previous rounds.

Looks like Super Ghouls is going to win.  Just how hard is it?  I remember renting it in 5th grade and liking it, but its been a long time.  I haven't actually played any of the games in prep for the show, and I may play this one if it wins.  Has anyone beat it recently?
Seriously though, playing through this in just 1 week? It must've taken me about 2 months to fully complete (to be fair most of it was that bloody boss - the final boss was peanuts compared to him) and I was on the lowest difficulty!

Oh shnap, two months!  I don't know if I can make that commitment!  I'm going to watch a few videos of it on the tube to see if I get coaxed into buying it.

The later levels are ok, the boss fights aren't super creative but they are fun. It is just the artificial way they extended the game, it was NOT necessary and killed any incentive I had to beat it.

you and me both sister. I do wish the gold armor was easier to get that really helped make the game bearable.

Noo! Cho aniki is losing! As for what you said, greg did talk about it on the podcast, but it was meant as a quick joke, and only he scratched the surface. I think everyone should have a chance to play it, I hear it is a really good shooter, but a unque one :D

I'm interested to see how they stretch discussion past one show.

I seriously doubt that we will.  I chose all five of these nominees in part due to the brevity of the potential discussion.

This seems to be the most highly participated poll yet; I hope the play-along itself will be equally popular.  I voted for Ninja Spirit, but at least now we'll get SGnG out of the way.  It feels almost like a relief to just get it over with.  On the downside, it's one of the two games I didn't already own, so now I have to shell out eight bucks.  (But I don't have Ninja Spirit either, so obviously that wasn't a factor in my vote.)

Can't say I appreciate vudu's conduct or attitude in this or any of the RetroActive rounds so far.  Beatings will continue until morale improves.  I will most likely set the next poll so that results cannot be viewed until the voting period ends.

I actually have the SNES cartridge for this.  I'll give it an hour.  I've played a *lot* of the NES one (I had it when I was a kid) but I've never really given the SNES game much attention.  Probably because it's incredibly frustrating.

Hmm, looks slower than I remember.  And man, what's with getting stripped down to your briefs while you're fighting the monsters.  If that isn't survival horror I don't know what is.

I have played it, and it's just a joke.  It's not a very good shooter at all.  I recall vudu calling it mediocre.  That's higher praise than it deserves.  It's worth a look for the spectacle, sure.  You don't see this much concentrated Japanese weirdness just anywhere, but that's all it's good for.

Sorry!  Just trying to be funny.  I'm really not as much of a jerk as I sometimes make myself out to be.  :)

And hey!  I participated in the Secret of Mana discussion (even if I fought against the game with all my might during the voting process).

I might not be able to participate in this discussion due to monetary issues. If I find enough change in my pockets and couch cushions to buy it then I'll join in.

I am bummed at how Vudu was a turn coat. I thought you were on the Ninja's side!

Though if we can't watch the polls in the future I will be very sad indeed.

What do you mean?  Ninja Spirit wasn't going to win.  I saved everyone from playing a less-than-stellar shooter.  (With the countless shooters available on VC there's no excuse for playing a bad one.)

Couldn't disagree with you more! Anyway maybe it's just me but I think it's a shame Aniki didn't win if only because it seems to be pretty divisive and who wouldn't want to hear a heated argument between say, James and Greg about its quality? Ah well, I'll be joining in with Super Ghouls and Ghosts regardless, it's good stuff and I bought it on VC months ago. Been watching a speed run of the game on Youtube, makes it look easy!

By the way can anyone confirm; if, the first time through the game you get the bracelet and finish the last but one boss with it, will it let you through to the final one or do you get sent back anyway? I know second time round if you do it without the bracelet it sends you back, but only to the start of the 7th stage. I can imagine some lucky sod out there somewhere on their first ever playthrough completing it first go and being completely ignorant of the whole 'whoops back to the start' thing.

I downloaded Super Ghouls 'N' Ghosts last night.  The game is fantastic.

So far I'm up to the third level.  This is honestly the most fun I've had with a video game in a long time (probably since Mario Galaxy).

Can someone create the discussion thread so we can talk about this game?

Ok I officially retract that statement; I just played through it to the end in one sitting and according to my play history it took 1hr 44mins including the credits etc., so maybe 2 months was both an exaggeration and just because I was pretty **** at it.

Really? I thought it did. I've seen it for sale on some sites. I thought it was the sequel that got canned.

On Amazon they have a listing for the N64 version.

I think I mixed that up with Glover which did come out and had a sequel planned.
Yay for obscure 32/64-bit platformers!

I am very certain it was never released. It is not uncommon for Amazon to have a product listing for an unreleased game, especially one that was released on another system.
