Title: I luv my iPhone 3G!
Post by: GoldenPhoenix on April 01, 2009, 11:49:39 PM
Today I got my new iPhone and I really love the features it has (better then my ancient, 3.5+ year old phone). Do you guys happen to know what games are worth getting? It is really overwhelming when you look at both the free stuff and the pay stuff.

Labyrinth is a great showpiece for the accelerometers. Rolando's fun. If you like Risk I can't recommend Lux DLX enough. Blox is simple fun for 99 cents. Dropship actually manages to make dual analog controls work in something that's half Geometry Wars and half Lunar Lander. Looking at my phone I can't help but notice I have way too many word games, Wurdle is a good Boggle clone. It's not a game, but WunderRadio is great if you want to listen to terrestrial radio stations without carrying around more hardware, it has every local station in my area except one or two.

Thanks for the advice. I actually bought Oregon Trail, Yahtzee (sadly it doesn't use motion), Monkey Ball, another Yahtzee esque game, and um I think that is it. It is SO EASY to spend money that i may go broke iPhone app/game shopping.

If you want a tower defense game, get Field Runners.
Also, my first iPhone game is being deved right now, so buy that when it goes up. I'm thinking I'll ask 2 bucks...
I may not ever finish it.

Wait, there's Oregon Trail on there? I have to go get that. Yacht is a Yahtzee clone that uses motion to roll the dice. I really didn't like the controls in Monkey Ball, especially when you compare them to Labyrinth which gets them so right.

Are there any games that are good as "graphical showpieces" for iPhone? Any 3D games besides Monkey Ball?

If you want a tower defense game, get Field Runners.
Field Runners is good, but I just got GeoDefense, and it is way better. Harder, too. Field Runners is pretty simple.
Also, Zen Bound is a really great, relaxing puzzle game if you're up for spending $5.

If you don't already read it, I'd recommend checking out The Tilt (http://www.1up.com/1upblogs/1/1ups_iphone_and_apple_gaming_blog) blog on 1UP.
They have a weekly column that discusses cool gaming apps that come out every week. They also review some of the "bigger" games.
It's actually worth checking out even if you don't have an iPhone (like me) because Parish goes off on wild tangents where he'll spew information about old Apple computers.
;D

Tap Tap. All my friends love it. Also, Knots is great. It's like twister for your fingers. Great in 2 player.

My favorite game on my iPod touch are Aurora Feint (free edition), Tap Tap Revenge, and the Oregon Trail. Mind...those are the only games I have at the moment. :O

It's not a great game, nowhere near DDR or Guitar Hero. It is a fun little game though to pass the time when you're in the car...that is until you start getting carsick. :'(
I'm not too fond of the sections where you have to shake the system instead of tapping a dot though as I always end up loosing my grip and dropping my iPod. At least they have an option to turn that part off.
Oregon Trail is an absolute BLAST!!!

Oregon Trail is a good game. It is a nice remake of the classic. Brings back a lot of memories!

About 10 years ago I downloaded a Mac IIe emulator and Oregon Trail and my friend and I played through it. He died of dysentery, and some died from snake bites and what not, but God damn it, we made it all the way through...or at least I did.

I'm very sad right now, I just decided against buying an iPhone app because of it's size. We finally removed the fridge cleaning from the Wii just in time for it to become an issue here.

Guys, I just got an iPhone a few weeks ago! I'm having a great time with it, and am surprised with the sheer number of quality games out there. Wow.
DrewMG guided me towards GeoDefense, and I've been hooked. It's really challenging and addictive, and I've almost beat all the levels (just one Hard stage left!). Also picked up Pixelogic, a really well-done picross game, and a pseudo-sudoku game called Nine Gap. Oh, and Hero of Sparta, when it was on sale for 99¢, which has been called God of War for the iPhone – cool graphics/presentation, but I just can't come to grips w/ the controls. Oh, and picked up ShapeShape, which is an odd platformer-esque game where you maneuver the little guy by "pushing" him with your touch. The last game I picked up was Zentomino, a tangram game.
Oh, it's not a game, but I picked up an app that gives you access to like hundreds of emoticons – Emoji. Only other iPhone users can see them, though. :(
GP, I'm with you. I luv my iPhone too. :D
Insanolord, which app did you decide against?

The good thing about the .99 games on the iPhone is that if you don't like the game, you can delete it, and there's virtually no guilty. I too haven't really given Hero of Sparta that much playtime yet.
The games I've probably put the most playtime into lately are:
Tiger Wood PGA Tour - an amazing rendition of the franchise, with a pretty cool control mechanic Rope n' Fly - It's basically a Spiderman simulation high score game. Zen Bound - a bit pricy, but a very "Zen" game indeed. Sort of a physics based puzzle game.

Oh I get it now: this whole thread is an April's fool joke!! Because I was beginning to worry that people actually think the **** iPhone is a viable platform for real games. Pheww!

I'd rather have an iPhone as a game machine than either Sony platform this generation (though if I didn't already have a 360 and I were able to overcome the awful PS3 controller it might be higher). There's some really great stuff there, and like I do when someone dismisses the Wii as a gaming platform I'm just going to say that I feel sorry for you for not being able to experience it.
To stay on topic, just before I opened this thread I opened the App Store to download a few of the games on John Davison's latest big list of great iPhone games. (http://www.whattheyplay.com/blog/2009/07/28/johns-second-giant-list-of-iphone-games/)

Oh don't feel sorry for me, I have no intention in hell to buy an iPhone. I can't stand the thing. If I had to chose another portable device besides the DS to play games, I would go for a PSP. Wait, I already have one! But Apple and its overpriced/overhyped stuff, no freaking way, thanks.

The vast majority of iPhone games cost < 4.99. How is that over priced? Sure, the device is pricey, but with all the things it does, it probably SHOULD be pricey.

I'm actually French and the saying goes like "à chacun ses gouts".
I know, I was trying to speak your language! :P Blast my poor written French, but thanks for the correction. Can't it be singular, though? That's the way I learned it...
Anyways... YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

Two weeks ago, I got a Nokia e71 and I think it's fan-fucking-tastic.
I bought it mostly because I wanted a phone to work all over the world (especially the mid-east), but it has basically the same functionality as an iphone without the touchscreen keyboard.

Ghisy, do you like it when Microsoft fanboys crap all over the Wii stuff we're excited about? If you've got nothing constructive to add and don't want to read about us enjoying our iPhones, save your breath (fingers?:P) and just don't read/comment.
On-topic: I heard iPhone OS 3.0.1 does wonders for battery life! Which means more Zenonia time. I'm getting better with the "virtual d-pad," but still kinda wish that game were on DS. Does anyone know if that game was released somewhere else before? Some bits of it seem like it wasn't made for the iPhone originally...

decoyman, I'm freaking tired of reading about the stupid iPhone everywhere I go. It's like phones didn't exist before, it's ridiculous. This is a Nintendo board and this thread shouldn't even exist here. You can enjoy your phone all you want, I won't bother you again then.

This is a subforum for games that do not exist on Nintendo consoles.
The iPhone is not a Nintendo console. It plays video games.
Hmm...

I may get The Sims 3 for iPhone, I heard it is quite good. Personally I don't like playing many games on the device because of touch controls though.

I downloaded an NES emulator on my non-iphone and it came with a few games; mario bros1, contra 1, bomberman, ice climbers and a few others i cant think of at the moment.
I uninstalled it soon after as the game ran sooo slow and with no sound. Playing with a keyboard was a pain too.
Meanwhile, I also had a few Doom maps and it played MUCH better than the NES emulations, even WITH sound! Weird.
Oh, and they were free :)

My friend has it and he likes it. He's going to get a blackberry instead. I argue that american phones (blackberries!) aren't really made for everywhere else.

You'd think with multi-touch capabilities and a very accurate accelerometer, the iPhone would be up a Nintendo fan's alley, just because it's a whole slew of new games that use completely untested and in some cases very innovative control schemes. I think the games fail more often than when they succeed, but when they DO succeed, they are a lot of fun. Zen Bound is a game that could be a lot of fun on WiiWare or DS for example, but it came to iPhone because of the low cost to market, I would imagine.

No it doesn't. Opera Mobile is better, it's also getting Flash 10 in a couple months. iPhone's Safari is pretty good, and fast, but it's certainly not the best.
