Title: DSi May Face Shortages

I'm sure most of our dedicated readers remember how wrong most of the people on staff here were when it came to the Wii's launch.  What was the line?  "You'll be able to walk into any Wal-Mart on launch day and pick one up."  Boy were we way off, and we still take crap about it to this day!  Well this time I'm here to tell you the opposite for the DSi.  We are hearing some rumblings from a well placed source that the system is receiving a very small initial shipment.

So what does this mean for you? It may already be too late but you should probably try and find a place to pre-order as soon as possible if you want to get a system next week.  If that fails, just try and get to the store as early in the morning as possible.  I personally pre-ordered my system on Amazon.  Right now it is saying my expected ship date is April tenth even though the system comes out on the fifth.  Does this mean I'm not getting one from the first batch or is Amazon just being slow? It's hard to say, but I placed my order on February 24. That's pretty early to not have one shipped on the release day.

The larger screens, downloadable games, and rumor of a possible Game Boy Virtual Console must be making the new DS quite the hot commodity.

Unlike with the launch of the Wii, I don't really see a need to own a DSi on day one.  From what we know, there aren't going to be any killer-apps in the form of downloadable games or DS games with exclusive DSi features available at launch.  I'm perfectly fine waiting for a couple of months and picking up one at my leisure.

Plus, I have a $60 Best Buy Rewards coupon that expires in June.  Seems like a DSi might be a good way to spend it.  ;)

My girlfriend just finished paying off the pre-order for the DSi today.  Hopefully she doesn't get attacked by the DSi pre-order crowd. :/

Then again, my closest gamestop I've never seen more than 5 people in that store at a time...so who knows how their pre-orders went.

Thank God I pre-ordered mine...I just wish there was a pink one. :'(

The blue US one is gorgeous, I love it. Can't wait to finally get a hold of it, not only to enjoy it but to spite Jonny!

I requested the weekend off so I can wait in line Saturday and sleep in Sunday.  I can't wait to get mine!  This'll be the fourth system launch I've waited for (Original DS, Game Cube, Wii)...

i don't see it. Maybe Nintendo hasn't unloaded millions in the airwaves yet, but I don't see demand for it.

mixed love by hardcore gamers, and casual gamers are oblivious to it.

Now Christmas time thats a different story. Launch shouldn't be that bad.

With the economy the way it is, I don't see people buying it INSTEAD of DS Lite which is cheaper.

I am going to save this and bring it up when NWR posts; "DSi: The fastest selling handheld EVER!" or something like that.

Simply because YOU don't see the hype it doesn't mean it won't sell. Remember, casuals were oblivious to the Wii too and you know how that went.

I've got some insider info!  I work at best buy, so I know how many most of the stores in my district are getting.  My store is getting 36 of both colors, and the other smaller store in town is getting 12 of each.  The rest of my district stores are getting anywhere from 15 to 20 of each.  The ad minimum is probably 12.

I suppose that is fairly small.  But I'm not sure if they will be huge day one sellers, I haven't received any questions about it, and people are surprised when I mention it coming out in a week.  If they do sell out I would assume the black to sell out quicker, because I'm assuming that only core gamers know about it, and that the majority of core gamers would prefer black to the blue.

That said, I am going to preorder one at a gamestop as soon as I can (as best buy, being fair, will not hold one for me).  I used to work at a gamestop, but have lost all my contacts so I don't know what that front looks like.  Bosshog  (MNCDover, love the comic!) might still work at gamestop?  I'm sure at least one of us does, and whoever works in any sort of retail should speak up and let us know what its looking like!

I placed a preorder on Amazon a couple nights ago. The GB/A stuff isn't a big deal since I still have all my games and systems from those.

The point is that you can get games you DON'T have.

I don't understand how anyone could believe the DSi won't face shortages. First off, the DS is still insanely popular. Secondly, the DSi already has pre-orders in record numbers. Most importantly, people like to jump on fads and gadgets and buy things they don't really need.

Yup.  There are times when we're completely sold out of DS Lites - and there are more times people call from out of town to see if we have any because their town is out.

You should direct them to Sacramento.  Every fad here is over.  Everything of any Nintendo gimmick is plentifully in stock.

I just walked into a department store around noon and bought mine, there was no big queue or anything and they had two of each color (white and black) there. I got a white one since I figure that won't make fingerprints as visible.

I thought the matte finish made it so finger prints wouldn't be visible regardless of system color.

Yeah, I didn't know about that. It feels pretty rough too.

So my system shipped from Amazon today and should arrive by Tuesday....

So, so much for the April 10th ship date I noted in the original blog post... I'm pretty happy. :)

I like how I casually walked in to Target and saw that they had quite a few units in stock and bought one.

How is it that this thing received record pre-orders yet it didn't come close to selling out on day one?

Because Nintendo was ready for this launch as opposed to the Wii launch.

My bad.  I figured with us getting a whopping 6Black/5Blue, we'd sell out early on.  We didn't.  And we got 12 Black and 6 Blue yesterday as well.

I guess the few eccentric people who wanted one decided to pre-order because they too figured there'd be shortages.

"DSi May Face Shortages", emphasis on "may" because you indicated a possibility that might occur, but also says that the otherwise might happen, so Pale you weren't completely wrong. Next time just title it as "DSi will face shortage".

I'm holding off on the purchase of a DSi for the official announcement of the portable VC in North-America.
