Title: How to have fun with a 360?
Post by: KDR_11k on March 23, 2009, 05:31:56 PM
My 360 is gathering dust and I don't mean that in the literal sense (well, yes, it's also gathering physical dust but that's not related to usage patterns). I'm having trouble finding games to actually have fun with. There are just no games out there that look to me like they're worth 70€ and the pricedropped games are a very limited selection, most of which is garbage. My current library was mostly influenced by what I could find for cheap:
WarTech: Senko No Ronde (15€) (meh) The Outfit (13€ used) (meh) Earth Defense Force 2017 (~25€) (great) Eternal Sonata (~20€) (meh) Saints Row (10€) (great) Phantasy Star Universe (7€) (meh)
XBLA: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (10€) (didn't really click with me) Braid (15€) (nice) Castle Crashers (15€) (nice) The Maw (10€) (nice)
Total: 140€... The system itself costs 200€...
So far I'd say the most fun I've had on the system was probably with Saints Row, a game I wouldn't have considered at a higher price because of its theme (why it even HAS car tuning I'll never know, cars are more disposable than allies so why would I waste money on car tuning when I could spend it on more M-16 ammo?). I get the feeling I have to disregard my preconceptions about the themes I want in games in order to get any fun out of that system, buy something that looks absolutely repulsive at first but is fun underneath. The problem is finding those games. The only big ones I've heard much about are Halo 3 (no pricedrop yet and I'm not paying 70€ for that!) and Gears of War (not released here, MS is too kiddy to allow unrated games on the system) so I'm kinda lost. Doesn't help that almost every game is on the PC and cheaper too.

You really should check out Saint's Row 2.

But that's 70€ compared to the 10€ I paid for the first...

This is the biggest problem I have with both HD systems; they lack exclusives and their releases are nearly identical.

I feel that, if I was in the same boat as KDR, I'd just not want to pay 60USD for games (let alone 70€). I have a friend who has that issue. He's been trying not to buy SFIV eventhough he wants it pretty badly.

COD5 is a fantastic game (though you do kill alot of germans), as is GoW2.

Left 4 Dead. Great game.

I enjoyed Crackdown and Overlord. Also, Earth Defense Force 2017.

Can't find Crackdown on Amazon, I wonder if it got blocked here... I remember either Crackdown or Condemned getting blocked. Well, condemned can't be found either so I guess both.

I bought Earth Defense Force 2017 without reading a single review just because people (mostly KDR) wouldn't shut up about it.

Yeah but I got it for the PC.

If you like strategy games, Catan is a great XBLA game. If not... well, Geometry Wars 2 is a great XBLA game.

The last time we played Catan we were bored by its slow moving and random nature after being used to Puerto Rico and Agricola. Dunno, didn't like the demo of GW2 much.

Hmm, how about Civilization Revolution or the latest Banjo-Kazooie?

Civ doesn't exactly strike me as something to play on a console. I tried the B-K demo but couldn't get anything done, it felt really clunky and confusing with levels that acted as hubs for the actual missions that were very tiny things or something, no real idea about that. Then again I heard the demo was pretty bad compared to the real game.

The demos to Dead Space, Conan, and The Watchmen were fun.

Wonder where you live? I know some countries don't allow renting of any type but I would suggest doing that. I used to buy all my games (ended up with 200+ just last generation alone) but now I rent 90% of the time. I use monthly passes that range from $20-30 a month. Avg around 8 titles a month (i don't beat all of them).
A friend uses boomerang (he lives in the UK) and he recommends them. I think he pays $23 (15 pounds) for two titles at a time with pro/shiping and he says he gets around 6 titles a month.
Hell this month alone I ended up with SF4, Madworld, Creature, House of the Dead OVerkill, and RE5. It's month well spend and I end up saving money in the end.
If your country doesn't allow renting/reselling then you might try importing games. Some US games can play on pal systems without mods. http://forum.xbox-sky.com/xbox360_regional_compatibility_guide/
You buy games at US prices than just have them shipped. SR2 for example is $20 used off ebay. Shipping depends on your orgins again and what taxes they have but spending "post" to Uk is rather cheap just don't use FEDEX. You wouldn't want to see all of those "fees" they came up with.

Civilization Revolution was really made from the ground up to work on consoles, and they pulled it off wonderfully. I've spent dozens of hours playing it, and never wished I were playing it on a computer instead. If you like strategy games, I can't suggest CR enough.
The limited success of Banjo makes me sad, because it really is a wonderful game. It's like the spiritual successor to Diddy Kong Racing. The only real flaw I could find with the game is that it gets difficult. Mightily so.

Our local rental place charges 1.50€ a day. Probably still cheaper than buying but I tend to play games only in short bursts spread out over a long time and would have to change my approach if I want to finish the games in 1-2 days. I guess it'd be worth a try anyway... Doesn't really change the issue with "no games I care about" though.

Newest way to have fun: Guitar Hero Metallica

I got all the rythm of a brick. Additionally music games make me concentrate on the symbols, completely shutting out the music and eliminating any immersion, I focus on hitting buttons rather than playing a song or anything. I wouldn't feel like a guitar hero, I'd feel like a secretary. Already avoided Elite Beat Agents because of this and EBA is only 15€ these days.

Well, the situation hasn't improved one bit (the system is completely unused now) and yet I hear everyone talk about how they use their 360 the most and all that. Since I suspect the whole word of mouth stuff on NWR helped me find more games for the Wii than the professional review sites I think it might help to join some 360 community, does anyone know one with boards that aren't cluttered to hell and back with retarded polls?

Left 4 Dead is unbelievably awesome. It might be the best co-op game ever created.

And it's a PC game.
I bought Halo 3 because it's 30€ now, I'm hoping for the same standards-lowering effect it had on Yahtzee since I figure that's what I need if I'm going to get anything out of the 360. So far the only standard I can see it lowering is my expectation that dual analog controls actually work out well because the games I played so far didn't demand mouse-like aiming skills while Halo 3 does. Yeah, it's pretty but otherwise feels like every other FPS I've ever played (well, okay, the Half-Life-style ones, not stuff like Painkiller or Serious Sam) except you don't have to ration health (and in turn run out of it after 2-3 hits).

I don't play my 360 much either KDR.
I think if I were to list all of the games I like for the system it would look something like this:
Assassin's Creed Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts Beautiful Katamari Crackdown Earth Defense Force 2017 Guitar Hero II Kameo: Elements of Power Ninja Gaiden II Saints Row Table Tennis (only fun with other people) Viva Pinata
I know you've already confirmed that you've played or can't play some of those; however, three that I didn't see that stand out are Assassin's Creed, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, and Kameo: Elements of Power.
Depending heavily on pricepoints, those games are definitely worthy. Kameo is super cheap around here, and as such I felt it was well worth all $15 I paid for it. Banjo-Kazooie is nothing like the original titles but if you enjoy building stuff (like Legos, K'nex, Erector Sets) you will definitely connect with the game. As for Assassin's Creed, if you don't mind a bit of repetition and enjoy aimlessly exploring huge cities, the game is highly enjoyable. I find myself playing it from time to time to enjoy the landscapes and find hidden flags in the vast countryside and cityscapes of the game.

I think Faffing About's Creed is on the PC too, that tends to be cheaper. BK seemed pretty fail in the demo... I can try finding Kameo though that's so old I don't think it'll be easy.

You want to know what the best game on the XBox 360 is?
Sneak King.
You play as Burger King's King and you have to hide and surprise people with food when they least expect it. Genius.

Actually, Big Bumpin' is surprisingly addictive in multiplayer. Got more enjoyment out of that then Banjo-Kazooie, anyway...

I liked Banjo as well. You have to put time into it (in the begining you kinda have fixed machines). If they fix a few issues (namely cars handle like bricks with wheels) I think this could have been the most orginal title for the year. Hopefully MS sees this as well and allows them to make a sequel (though I hope they get a new screenwritter but the jokes were beyond lame).

Considering its low sales figures, this very well could be the end of Banjo-Kazooie. On a non-Nintendo machine, anyway.

I also played Left4Dead, but only in PC, but this is the first time I heard that this game is in 360? Maybe I would try that out playing 360 in the mall with that FPS game.
