Recent layoff warnings and lowered earnings estimates have lead some to doubt the old belief that video games are recession-proof. Okay, how about this one then? Nintendo is recession-proof.

The Big N is getting even bigger. Nikkei reports today that the company has completed purchase on 40,000 square meters of land in its current home town of Kyoto. The purchase, made late last year, cost the company 12.8 billion yen (at current exchange rates, about $141 million).

Nintendo plans to build an R&D facility on the new land for game software and hardware development. The Nikkei report suggests that Nintendo is also looking into the possibility of improving efficiency by placing its R&D in one location. Currently, the company operates two main offices in Kyoto, its main office near the newly purchased land, and an older office that was its headquarters until the year 2000.

Why can't they be opening their new R&D department in western New York?

Well they already have a retail presence and I think a marketing presence in NY. Also I doubt that will happen because we have heard nothing from NST after Mario VS DK 2 and the canceled Project H.A.M.M.E.R.

Isn't space too expensive there?

I was reading a review of Ridge Racer 64 and wondered what the heck happened to NST.  They just dropped off the face of the earth.

Hah, I was playing Metroid Prime Hunters and thought the same thing.

Have they done ANYTHING on the Wii? I know they did some DS projects, but dropped off the face of the Earth afterwards.

So after the new R&D building is constructed, Reggie gets to keep the old office buildings as his personal vacation houses, RIGHT?

Who knows, maybe we will hear something from them at E3 (watch it's Kid Icarus LOL!) or maybe they are assisting with Punch Out! development??

With the way NOA treated NST from the very beginning starting with Wave Race, it's apparent NST is doomed to making VC conversions and instore demos forever.

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Software_Technology) has a link to a site that claims they're working on an untitled Wii game.
