Title: Canceled Wii project Red Faction B.E.A.S.T.
Post by: Flames_of_chaos on January 16, 2009, 12:57:57 AM
Poor red faction :( (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojNDLnk6Gy4)
It was being worked on by Locomotive, but THQ has seen fit to shut that studio down, and throw B.E.A.S.T on the scrapheap at the same time. The above video is only prototype footage. Looks like a sad side effect of corporate restructuring. REVIVE THIS THQ!!!

I still remember playing the original and throwing a remote mine on people and watching them flail around, waiting for them to just get a little closer to their friends...

The original Red Faction was an excellent game.

I still enjoyed that game. I beat it twice. I got it for 5 bucks. Money well spent.

Well Red Faction kind of lived on in that Xbox 360 game from Lucasarts (though not a cheerful life).

Where did this break? Was it Cassmassina's dark game?

I found this news on Destructoid, they got the video from the same youtube link.

The dark game is Sadness.
And Cursed Mountain.
And RE5 Wii.
And Man Icarus.

Looking at the video, I'm not overly impressed. I know the word "generic" is the hot new troll, but this game really did look uninspired. I know it was prototype work, but the character design and space marine locales looked meh.

It looked meh, but the aiming with a wiimote over the shoulder has promise.
It was awesome in RE4, after all.

In other words, and typical run-of-the-mill last-gen FPS entry [you'd think] that should easily be found on market leading platform.

That music sounds extremely familiar. I'm thinking F-Zero GX, but I'm not quite sure.

Dude, that music has definitely been used somewhere else. I'm almost positive it's from F-Zero as well. You can even here the engines start.

You guys realize that the video is a prototype right?

It's also a sequel from a different developer than the previous titles which is usually a bad sign.

This was probably being made during the same time THQ started cutting back from some of their other devs like Juice Games. I think THQ officially ended the Juiced racing series.
Ah lets see they also killed off Helixe, Locomotive Games, Mass Media, Paradigm Entertainment, and Sandblast Games. All killed off back in November 2008.
Locomotive Games used to be called Pacific Coast Power & Light, the guys that made Road Rash 64 (I had a lot of fun with that game).
Paradigm Entertainment made Pilotwings 64 and Beetle Adventure Racing.
Terrible year for THQ.

I'd rather have Guerrilla.

I got to test early stages of that game mid last year, I wonder how it turns out.

If they're bragging about those polygon counts, the models in Mortal Kombat 4 (arcade) were 3,000 polygons each, and even higher for the Dreamcast port...that game came out 11 years ago.

Polygon counts are a funny thing. RE4 used 5000 polygons for Leon. Perfect Dark for the 360 used 3000 for their characters.

Unreal 2 had 5000 for story characters, 3000 for combat characters. UT2003/4 used around 3500 per player. Doom 3 went back to 1500-2500...
One on one fighting games can have way more polies than games with many characters and moving through levels, last I heard was something like 15000 for a character in Dead or Alive 3 (or whatever the XBox 1 game was numbered) and I think that went up for the 360 game.
For comparison, the DS can show about 2000 polygons at 60FPS (more at lower rates) for the entire scene, level geometry, characters and everything.
