Title: What have you pre-ordered for 2009?
Post by: Tanatoes on January 11, 2009, 10:58:04 AM
So what games have you guys got on your wishlists for 2009?

I just put in a $250 Amazon pre-order:  Deadly Creatures, Mad World, Little King's Story, Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers, The House Of The Dead: Overkill, and Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop.

And come to think of it there are a few other games I want this year that I didn't order - such as the new Overlord game and Harvest Moon.  So many games!

2009: Year of the third party.  Confirmed.

I don't have anything currently preordered, but I do have a list and the games I'm likely to buy in the 1st quarter of '09 are The Little King's Story, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, Pikmin, Rune Factory: Frontier, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, and Marble Saga Kororinpa for the Wii and Major League Baseball 2K9 for the 360. That's 6-1 in favor of Nintendo, with 5 of them being third-party.

I don't do preorders...No real point in the area I live (out in the boonies)...

I want One(e)chanbara and Little King's Story in February...MadWorld, Rune Factory Frontier, and Broken Sword in March...Arc Rise Fantasia in June...Murasasa in July...

Nothing else has a date yet, so I'm not going to bother adding them...

I'm waiting till reviews mostly (except for PES). I have more important things I have to purchase at the moment (phish tickets!) and I'll only buy a game day one if it really deserves it.

The only preorder I have down is for Ys Book 1 and 2 on DS for 9.99 (I applied a 25 dollar gift card to it). There are games I really want but because of how the economy, I'm unemployed and have a huge backlog I will be waiting for games to get some price drops or I'll pick them up when I'm more financially stable. Right now I just made a wishlist on amazon of what I want and I'll pick them up when I can.

Leaving aside that I don't preorder (why would I restrict myself to a store like GameStop?) I tend to forget what's coming out about 2 days after it's announced. I guess Fragile and ARF look interesting but they're not the kinds of games that get automatic releases in Europe. Oneechanbara is questionable, I'm not sure the games are very fun to play and for a novelty game I'm not paying full retail price. Conduit I'm not sure, depends on my mood when it arrives. I'm mostly negative on Mad World (even if it does get released here), I've already got No More Heroes to ignore.

Haven't pre-ordered anything yet. Like Flames, I am still unemployed so I can't reserve anything yet.

Well I don't know how it is in Germany but I just preorder at Amazon if it's worth the preorder (damn you atlus for having awesome preorders!), if you preorder an item at a online store they just charge your credit card/debit card/bank account when it's ready to ship. But Amazon in America tend to fluctuate on their pricing pretty frequently so I just try to score a better deal especially during these times.

I'm not too big on pre-orders any more.  I now only pre-order if I absolutely must play the game day one.  Pre-ordering Collector's Editions is especially pointless these days, since they virtually never sell out, and places like Amazon seem to drop the price on CE's mere weeks after they're released.

What I do nowadays is pre-order if I'm going to get something like a code mailed to me as a bonus, and then cancel the pre-order after I get the item.  That's what I did with LittleBigPlanet; I got the code for the Kratos costume from GameStop in email, and then a few days later cancelled the pre-order.  Then I got the game for Christmas.  Voila, free Kratos code.

Wii games typically don't have CE's or bonus items, so pre-ordering is usually pointless (unless you're talking about a big Nintendo title like Mario Kart Wii or Wii Fit, both of which became scarce shortly after release).  If you aren't going to play them right away, you might as well buy them after release and monitor a site like CheapAssGamer.com for a deal (which are plentiful).

I don't pre-order unless there's a bonus for doing so. I don't want to commit to a game without reading reviews first.

There's nothing which is a definite buy for me, I'm just observing the release schedule and waiting for some solid information on the various games in production.

I've pre-ordered nothing because pre-ordering is for chumps (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/12/18/)*.

*I don't really look down on anyone that does it. I just think I should be able to go to a store near the release date and get it... just like with any other product.

I think the last game I preordered was Brawl. I really only do it for hard to get after release date or if I want a game to succeed.I don't have much money so I haven't preordered anything lately.

I totally agree.  The simple fact of the matter is that most games are very easy to get at or shortly after release.  The only real exceptions are the really obscure ones that have limited runs.

While it's possible to preorder at Amazon I don't see a point to it. Never seen extra stuff for preorders (at least not advertised) beyond maybe a poster or so and I've already got spare posters that I still haven't put up on the wall. Besides, the games I'm actually willing to pay full price for tend to be the ones that get shipped in huge numbers that make me wonder if they'll ever sell through that many. Maybe I'd preorder if games were cheaper when you do that.
Title: Re: What have you pre-ordered for 2009?
Post by: Tanatoes on January 12, 2009, 07:51:52 AM
I pre-order most of my games with Amazon for the convenience.  I get so many games that I often forget what the release dates are, so it's simpler whenever I see a game I know I'm going to buy to just pre-order it and forget about it.  Then I get an e-mail from Amazon saying "the game you pre-ordered has been shipped" and it's like a little present to myself.  I almost never go out to the store to buy games any more.. it's just too far to go and I hate waiting in lines and such.  Sometimes I comb through the used games at Blockbuster when I'm there anyhow looking for older games that for some reason I never got the first time around.

I'll preoreder in very rare circumstances. Most of the time, games price drop a month or two after release, so it never really pays to get it once it comes out. I think last year the only two games I preordered were Persona 4 and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, both of which I got through Amazon.

So as you might've guessed, this year, I have nothing reserved.
Title: Re: What have you pre-ordered for 2009?
Post by: KDR_11k on January 12, 2009, 10:04:17 AM
I'd make that 4-6 months after release or so, one month only happens with games that fail catastrophically (lol Fracture). Also console games drop much slower than PC games.

I know for a FACT i will pre-order

Wii Sports Resort.

That game will be IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND for months. I expect it to be shatter records and sell 4 million the first week. It will be riots in the street I tells you.

The only problem is I want a release date so I know where to Reserve it at. If summer I'll reserve it near my mom's house, if during Spring I'll reserve it near college.

Not really anymore because Amazon drops the price of Atlus games pretty fast since they are niche, and Atlus games more readily available ever since they started publishing Wii games. The only way Atlus gets preorders from me is free soundtracks, and the the triple threat of Lumionous Arc 2, Eternal Poison and Persona 4 having Art Books in addition to soundtracks is just evil.

You have no idea.  But at least I have more games at hand than any human could ever play.  (The dilemma is that I could probably play most of them if I were not employed, but then I couldn't afford to buy them!)

That is my problem. I can't find a job anywhere. So my gaming purchases come when someone is nice to give me money for doing anything. If I had the cash, I'd have preordered MadWorld, House of the Dead: Overkill, Dead Rising, and a few others.

I haven't preordered anything in a long while either and probably won't be doing so until I get out of unemployment.  I'd find it even harder to even purchase games if it weren't for the fact that I'd gladly eat nothing but ramen, rice, and canned foods.

That tournament stick is ****-hot, and it's limited to a run of 3000 so I can't fault you for that.  It's totally sold out on Amazon already.  It uses all Sanwa parts <drool>

I went through a pre-order mania phase last year, but over Christmas I realized that I had so many games coming in that I wasn't even taking the time to enjoy what I had.  I still have the Fallout 3 CE sitting here in it's plastic, and I got it at launch.  That's a waste of $70 if all I'm doing is staring at the game on the floor of my room.

I'll only pre-order if I WILL play the game day one.

Okay, I pre-ordered one game: Cv Judgement because Amazon listed it at 30€ (that's very cheap for a Wii game, the US equivalent price is $20 since a $30 game would cost 40€ here) and I wasn't sure that wouldn't go up by the time it comes out. If the price remains it seems like Konami has recognized that they're not going to sell many copies to the faithful fans.

Ok, let's get serious now...

I personally don't care if you pre-order games or not. You have clearly stated your reasons. The one thing that annoys me about it is the condescending attitude about it.

Many of us, myself included, like to pre-order games for various reasons (getting it at launch, making sure they have a copy etc.). Like I stated, you see no need and that's fine. However, there was no need to shove it on people's face like you are somehow better than them.

In that case, the one that made himself look like an idiot was you, because you saw the need to troll a thread with a snide attitude in order to make yourself feel better. And I reiterate, no one gives a crap what you think.

Okay, the truth is, I don't have any outstanding pre-orders right now. I'm waiting for my new internship to start, and then I want to be careful with my money and see how it goes from there. Additionally, I have a backlog that could last me a good year and a half.

HOWEVER, in the spirit of this thread, I have compiled a list of future games that I would heavily consider pre-ordering. Dates are NOT exact, list may NOT be complete, and some/many of these games may NEVER come out or get gelayed until 2010. That said, it was fun to compile quickly...

41 Wii games, 5 of which are WiiWare... and who knows what the future holds?

Well, it's a big list, but who knows if all those games will make it in 2009?

For example, Monster Hunter 3 could get delayed to 2010. Secret Files: Tunguska could simply NEVER make it to America from Europe (where's my Disaster? T_T), Suzumiya Haruhi no Heiretsu could never make it out of japan... there's a lot of caveats that I didn't take the time to weed out, sorry.

However, my list also lacks things like Sky Crawlers, Fragile, and Let's Catch... T_T I need to revise that list like, for realz.

"Retailers, definitely in the United States, are being far more prudent in what they buy, so they’re clearly going to focus on the triple A titles, but their day one orders are coming down. What they’re saying is that they’ll take in as little as need to, see how it sells through, and then they know they can order again in a matter of days if not hours. So that’s hurting us. In the United States you’ve got five customers, and those customers are saying that they don’t need to order four weeks’ stock, I’m going to order two. I don’t want all this inventory. I think you’ll find most publishers in the United States will be having similar challenges, to be honest.” - Sega Europe president Mike Hayes

I don't see where the challenge is there, was there a context?

Basically, retailers are becoming less likely to order a large pre-shipment without the pre-orders to back it up and without fast early sell-through. A game may need to sell through fast to incur further orders, and this means either pre-ordering (to increase the initial retailer order) or buying during the first two weeks of launch or so (to deplete the stock and trigger a second, more substantial shipment).

I think it speaks to retailers being less willing to take risks on inventory, meaning that pre-orders increase in importance to show retailers (and hence, Publishers) that a game is desired (everyone go pre-order Conduit, MadWorld, and HOTD:Overkill NOW).

I'm not sure that's true. I do see retailers stocking very large piles of hyped games (and sometimes being stuck with them if the game turns out to suck). Well, maybe not Gamestop but that store sucks anyway.

Well I just preordered Fire Emblem DS since I just can't say no to Fire Emblem.

Did you go for the over-priced copy at GameStop that comes with a limited edition art cell or did you get the correctly-priced version from Amazon?  ;)

Fire Emblem for the DS
Onechanbara
Mad World(despite the accursed SEGA LOGO)
Rune Factory
Little King's Story(which is so far away sadly).
Samurai Showdown Anthology

I can say though, that there are about 10-15 games on the radar that I am definitely interested in dropping a few food stamps on. Alas, Ghostbusters is not one of them...
