Title: Are you worried you will get shovel ware, or other crappy games for Holidays ?
Post by: AV on December 22, 2008, 03:26:13 PM
  ???  ???  ???

I might get a crappy game for Wii for the Holidays. I hope I get Gift Cards or Wii points card instead of a game because my family is very bad in judging what games I want. I am somewhat picky in what games I like.

I don't know what I will do if I get WiiFit. The balance board is sort of cool, but I seriously doubt I will play that for more than a week. I will instantly return any obvious shovel ware.

Okami, is the only game for the Wii that I want but I doubt I will get that. I mentioned it to my brother in a email when Gamestop had it on sale for $25.

Naah, my relatives know better than to try buying a game on their own. Especially since games are so fucking expensive.

If he doesn't want it I'll GLADLY take it off his hands. Really, I will.

Hey, its not like he'll need them for the Wii. It sucks. Hell, I'll take the feet too since he doesn't want Wii Fit.

If I got Wii Fit I'd at least give it a try.  I'd probably keep it since it's a Nintendo game and all.  I doubt I would keep Wii Music though or DK Barrel Blast (ugh).

I can trust my family not to do this to me.  The general rule is that if a videogame is not on my Christmas list, don't buy it for me.  Ditto with CDs.  DVDs are a little more open since I don't specifically collect them and thus am not so picky about.  My parents know me well enough to not do this to me.

My immediate family is pretty much the only people I get gifts from anyway.  My friends and I never bought each other gifts, I'm currently single, most of my grandparents have died, when I was a kid my aunts complained that buying for all the cousins was too expensive so I don't get gifts from that part of the extended family, and we don't do a Secret Santa at work anymore.

The only thing I have to worry about is birthdays as my friends and I do buy birthday gifts.  A friend who should know better bought another friend an unrequested videogame for his birthday and I was concerned he would do the same to me.  He didn't, thankfully, as he doesn't really read reviews anymore and with the Wii you really don't want to buy games based on the cover art.  "Hey Sonic was great on the Genesis, I'l buy Ian this!"

It's like a different take on the "clueless parents buys shoddy game based on popular licence."  Clueless friend buys shoddy game based on videogame franchise that used to be good. ;)

I got Britney's Dance Beat (or what it was called, saw it for 3€ or so) as a joke for a friend once. Yes, I did have a real gift at hand, I just thought it'd be funny to hand him that one first.

I know my girlfriend has got me a few games for Christmas.

It's a toss up she plays some games these but mostly only multiplayer. She has been playing Super Mario Galaxy on and off for like a year and is currently on 40 something stars. (Due to lack of playing not skill I might add).

She has a better chance than others of picking good games but I did have to talk out of buying DK Barrel Blast the other day because she loved the SNES Donkey Kong games. Much like Ian's example I guess.

In fairness when I simply told her the mechanics of the game she thought it was lame right away.

I have wanted to pick up Fable 2 for weeks but I think she might have bought it for me already. Hopefully she did otherwise I've been waiting for no good reason.

On the flipside I bought her Wii Music for Christmas before reading any reviews. I thought id sounded rubbish but I knew she liked the idea of the game and well I still think Wii Fit is rubbish too so I went against my own instinct and bought it

So perhaps it is I who have bought the shoddy game this year.

booooo. Somebody Died in making that movie. That was his last performance and you disrespect him by not paying for his work. If you want to disrespect the dead thats your problem, I will buy it as soon as I get a chance. Wanted is excellent movie, and This hulk was pretty good.

No one died from making the movie. This isn't Brandon Lee we're talking about. Besides, why does a dead guy need my money?

In all seriousness however, Dark Knight was very good. It was probably my favorite Batman film yet. That statement really surprises me too considering just how terribly lame Batman Begins was.

Sister got me Mirror's Edge for PS3.
Other sister and brother-in-law got me Shaun White for Wii.
Mom and Dad got me Fire Emblem Wii.

Also got some nifty gifts like a trebuchet building kit and some new jeans. =P

Thank you Maxi, but I already found it and read it. I forgot to say it was the Wii version BTW, and after reading the review I'm not so sure it is something I'd like. Now I'm really considering returning it to the store and hoping my sister doesn't find out... (she gave it to me)

The only other game I received was Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Mostly I just get money and/or gift cards as I'm not easy to shop for. Today I went out shopping, and with my Christmas money I bought a Nintendo DS along with Super Mario 64 and New Super Mario Brothers. The thing's been out for over four years now so I figured it was about time I get myself one, even if just for the Mario games. I have yet to play either game I bought; oddly enough, I went straight for the Nintendo Channel and downloaded some game demos. Therefore, the first DS game I played was Lock's Quest, which bored me. Start with the bad to appreciate the good, I sometimes say.

I got a DSL for Christmas.I had a DS before but it went missing perminatly.I got Meteos,Mario Kart DS and Brain Age during that time.I am currently playing through Mario&Luigi:SSS. I have to go meet Princess Peach at the airport but I am currently getting more money through a neat trick that I learned during my first playthrough back from 2003.

The gameplay consists of lining up 3 or more from left to right or up and down.Once that happens those get launched up as well as others above it.Each Planet has different gravity so it may take more or less launches depending on the planet. Some planets launch easily if you line up 3 vertical or 3 horizontal There is a Wifi multiplayer but I haven't played that.If you are the only one playing there is a multiplayer with the CPU.With or without teams. There is a fusion mode where you can get different planets, items, rare metals, and music.Whatever you launch in the main game gets to be used in this fusion mode.Once you fuse things you can view them in the extras mode.

Overall I think it is a great game.Highly recommended. The music is excellent.

Meteos is awesome if you only play it on DS the xbox live version of Meteos is horrible because not having a touch screen or pointer essentially breaks the gameplay.

The only game I got was Korg DS-10.  Which is great because that's the only game I asked for!  Guitar Hero: World Tour is kind of a gift to myself as I figured the full bundle would be out of the price range of my family members.  I'm usually very surprised how expensive of gifts other people give and receive compared to my family.  Yet I'm never disappointed at Christmas. :)

Other gifts:

The Genesis album Foxtrot.  I've been getting into classic Peter Gabriel era Genesis over the last few years and get one of their albums every year.  Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the only one I have left and it'll be sad to see this tradition end next year.

Got an H.P. Lovecraft "greatest hits" book.  I've heard so much about Lovecraft.  I loved Eternal Darkness whic of course was influenced by Lovecraft.  A couple years back I got into Robert E. Howard who was a friend of Lovecraft's.  I've just been pointed in this direction.  I figured this collection would be the best way to get into the author and then if I like what I read here and I can fill in the gaps.  Sadly in my research I couldn't find a good way to get Lovecraft's works without overlap in the volumes.  Howard's works are divided into clearly seperate volumes based on his major characters and I was hoping for that with Lovecraft but couldn't find it.

Got the Mr. Perfect DVD, an essential item for an old wrestling buff like myself.  Current WWE doesn't interest me but I gobble up the classic stuff like candy.  My Mom got each of my brothers and I a DVD of a classic film from our youth that she figured we would still like as adults.  She got me the PRINCESS BRIDE!  F*CK YEAH!

I also got the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion to go along with the original book I got a few years back. :)

My youngest brother got the big videogame haul this year.  Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and because it was 10 bucks and he has a PS2 now and loved the second game on my Cube, Soul Calibur 3.  It's the most videogames he's ever gotten at once.

I'm interested in reading more Robert E. Howard than what I've found on the net. How did you get into him? What do you recommend? Does it cost... T_T a lot of money?

I got into him though his most famous creation - Conan of course!  Dark Horse Comics has been reprinting the old Marvel Conan comics for a few years.  I had one single issue from my childhood that I loved and unlike most of the superhero books I had as a kid it was one that remained interesting from the perspective of an adult.  So I bought the first book of Conan reprints on a whim.  As expected it was awesome.  In a little commentary at the end of the volume, author Roy Thomas talked about the source material of the issues collected.  One of them was an adaptation of the Howard story The Tower of the Elephant.  Naturally Thomas raved about Howard's work and how when he was writing these comics he was trying to present a Conan as close to Howard's definition of the character as possible.  Tower of the Elephant was the best story of the first volume and I ordered what was then the other three volumes from Amazon.  Once again the best stories were Howard's so I decided to look into the original material.

Amazon has three Conan books collecting all of Howard's Conan stories.  So I bought all three.  I would recommend starting with the first one (The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian) and then decide if you like it enough to go on.  That series also has collections of his other characters like Kull, Solomon Kane and Bran Mak Morn and that makes it easy to collect a lot of his work without overlap.  These are softcover and the one I suggested is the very affordable price of $11.53.

And to keep things on topic, for Christmas I also got a Lifesavers Storybook and three kinds of Christmas M&M's - plain, peanut and MINT. ;)  I'm going to have a bit of a gut to work off in the new year.
