Title: WHat are your TOP 5 Wii games of 2008 ( including WiiWare ) ?
Post by: AV on December 17, 2008, 01:57:23 AM
I made a Youtube movie of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgXdLua9yZE)
However I won't just be a ad for myself I'll list them below.
5. Art Style Orbient 4. Tetris party 3. No More Heroes 2. World of Goo 1. Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
What the hell is Nintendo thinking Wii game of 2008 ?
Mario kart wii and its extreme cheap gameplay, and watered down local multiplayer
Honorable Mention
Lost Winds , great game but only 3 hours long so I couldn't add it to top list
I really wish I had money to buy Okami, Call of duty world at war, Star Wars Force Unleashed. All those games I really wanted to play this year, but sadly I only have enough money for bills and college, so I rarely bought new games.

SFU sucks. Don't waste a cent on it. Actually rent it.
Your sentiments on Mario Kart Wii are interesting and surprising and I whole heartedly disagree. For obvious reasons.
If had a "what the hell" game of the year it would be either WiiMoosic, AC, or the Balance Board. WiiMusic for overstated reasons, Animal Crossing for not change enough (even though i love it.) and the balance board needs to be sold separately already!

I'm afraid I have to disagree about Mario Kart Wii... best Wii game yet. Even some of the things you didn't like about it are reasons why I like it so much. Of course, I seem to be the only person in the entire universe who thinks that Smash Brothers Melee is a far better game than Smash Brothers Brawl, so I can respect your opinions and feelings about MKWii.
Anyways, unfortunately I've played only six games released in 2008... but those games I'd rank like this:
6. Boom Blox 5. Super Smash Brothers Brawl 4. House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return 3. Bomberman Blast 2. Mario Super Sluggers 1. Mario Kart Wii

1. Mega Man 9 2. Boom Blox 3. Lost Winds
There's a lot of games I haven't played yet... Okami, No More Heroes, World of Goo, de Blob
Also, some games I don't care for: Mario Kart & Animal Crossing (not different enough), SSB (never liked the controls)

1. Mario Kart Wii 2. Disaster: Day of Crisis + de Blob 4. No More Heroes 5. Zack & Wiki
EDIT: Holy crap, I forgot about Disaster. List updated! But now I can't decide which I like more, Disaster or de Blob. Arg!
What the hell is Nintendo thinking Wii game of 2008 ?
Mario kart wii and its extreme cheap gameplay, and watered down local multiplayer
So what you're basically saying is that you're a **** gamer. There's nothing cheap about MKWii (If someone even dares to mention cheap blue shell myth I will strike you down), it's only that you're not good enough to play the game well.
Also watered down local multiplayer? Another major what the hell? It's the best Mario Kart local multiplayer yet. You're obviously just playing MK64 and confusing it for MKWii or something.

Man, oh man, oh man...Top 5 is TOUGH...But I'll try...
1) Okami 2) Animal Crossing City Folk 3) Mario Kart Wii 4) No More Heroes 5) Wario Land Shake
But I haven't had the time to play Dawn of the New World yet, so that could easily usurp one of those spots...

5. Wii Fit 4. Mario Kart Wii 3. De Blob 2. Animal Crossing 1. Super Smash Bros.
I wanted to put Secret of Mana on there since it was released on the VC in 2008, but I figured that would be cheating.
I also haven't played No More Heroes yet, but I'm sure it would be on there.

Third parties are taking over.

Like I said in the video I think Mario Kart Wii ruined the game.
12 players is to much, I like the blue shell but I don't getting hit by blue shell than 2 red shells and than bullet billed. I was in 1st and I got destroyed and thrown back to 8th. I don't mind if I get second or 3rd instead of 1st because of items, I do mind when the ENTIRE momentum of the game can change totally in the last second and people win because they got best weapon, not because best overall driving skills.
The local multiplayer is also ruined and that is something I enjoy the most about Mario Kart. I hate the new set up with the balloons it just seems so lame. 3 balloons and your dead, and become a Bomb, that is how it was on MK64 and it worked perfectly. Having Infinite balloons and having infinite continues changes the entire concept of balloon battle. It would be one thing if I had the option to do what I wanted, but MKWii FORCES ME TO PLAY THIS WAY.
I hate playing on Teams, I don't want my crappy team member ruining my game. I want FREE FOR ALL, damn it. I hate having the CPU in the battle with me, I don't want 8 CPU and 4 people I only want my friends.
The lack of options for the player is why MKWii is so damn terrible. Why is the option to play free for all not in the game?
I like the new levels, I like motorcycles and I even like some of the new items but they totally messed up local multiplayer. Also I mentioned the online has been ruined.
THIS VIDEO PROVES HOW RUINED ONLINE IS FOR MARIO KART Wii (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBB7akssziA)
So Mario Kart Wii = Crap to me. Lack of options for Local Multiplayer, Super Cheap Single player, and hacked Online = NOT WORTH MY TIME POST A RENTAL.

i see this game and the great reviews but i don't get it. I guess its a game unless you play you don't get. I don't get it. I fear i will buy this game and it won't be up to greatness everyone says, or if it is great it won't be my type of game. I'm not into starcraft so it doesn't matter how many 10's it gets I don't get RTS games like that so similar to this all the great reviews can come but I don't think I will like it.
Being a college student using 80% of my money on paying down debt, 10% on dates with girls 5% on food that tiny % of extra money has to be spent on something I KNOW FOR A FACT I WILL ENJOY. So no buy for me.

4. Mario Kart Wii 3. Warioland: Shake it! 2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl 1. Guitar Hero: World Tour
No, I can't even think of a fifth. Mega Man 9 would likely be deserving but I haven't gotten round to downloading it yet (don't know why; it's not like I have to go to a store to do it). Really lousy year for the Wii overall. Mario Kart is only on my list because I couldn't think of much else and it wouldn't make any Best of Year lists otherwise. It's not a terrible game but certainly not a classic in any sense. The other three are really good games though.
SSB Brawl is really the only Wii exclusive game this year that I would say is even a remote contender for GOTY. Surprisingly the PS3 probably had the best year after being more or less completely worthless before. It shared a lot of it's best games with the Xbox 360 but I'd say a handful of exclusives put it over the top. And hey those multiplatform games ain't on the Wii so it's at least half a point for the other two consoles.
Since Brawl the Wii has been more or less irrelevent from a core gamer perspective. This year Nintendo really showed me exactly what market they're focusing on. Thankfully the DQX announcement provides some optimism. I really want to see what EAD, Retro and IS are working on though. Everyone points to those October announcements but those really indicated what Nintendo's lesser teams were working on (and Treasure). What the big guns are working on is a better indication of Nintendo's direction for 2009.
The "What the hell were they thinking?" game of this year, hell possibly of ALL TIME is Wii Music. Bad games happen all the time but this is Nintendo and Miyamoto making a bad game and what's weird is that the game appears to be INTENTIONALLY bad. It isn't buggy or rushed or unpolished, it sucks entirely because of the design of the game itself. And it isn't some throwaway bargain bin title either. This is Nintendo's biggest game for the Christmas season. The only thing else is a port of Animal Crossing. They only made ONE original Wii game for Christmas and it's one of the worst games of all time. Nintendo had pissed me off with some very lame non-games in the past but even I was completely shocked with how outright dumbed-down and worthless Wii Music was. Wii Music is Nintendo's E.T. and will be immortalized in worst game lists for all eternity.

I guess overall Super Mario Galaxy, I might have enjoyed that much. Not sure, I usually remember games how I left them and I usually leave them when I no longer like them. I remember not wanting to play de Blob because levels take too long to play so I didn't want to even start them (Xenosaga syndrome, "who knows how far it is to the next save point, better don't even start"). Might have liked Zack & Wiki's start but the game really went into freefall with Barbaros' revival and I couldn't be arsed to continue if everything looks like I've made it past the good parts already. Sonic started nicely, not sure how it holds up when you play more because I only played a few missions...

If I hear one more person call Wii Music a bad game I'm going to smack them. The game isn't bad, it just isn't for you. If you're a musician, guess what it's worthless because all of the concepts that make the game magical are commonplace for you.
If you aren't a musician or musically inclined the game teaches you the staples of music composition. It's something that's meant to be played in a group, probably more specifically, with family.
Just because a bunch of stupid game journalists are too HARDCORE for the game, doesn't mean it's bad, it means they're ignorant.

Should I use "enhanced remake"? "Special edition"? "Director's cut"? "Wii-make"? What term for releasing essentially the same game with a few new features would you prefer I use?
The FACT is Animal Crossing: City Folk is mostly recycled content from the other Animal Crossing games which means port. There's more pre-existing content than new. You can argue the technical definition of "port" all you want but you know I mean it to mean some variation of a re-release. Nintendo designed the game for the blue ocean market that had not played the game on the Cube or DS. It is no different then the Wii-makes Nintendo has on tap for next year.
This reminds me a lot of WarioWare for the Gamecube which lifts the single player mode from the GBA game. Calling that a port got some people riled up too.
If a Nintendo released a new Mario Kart that was Mario Kart Wii with one new circuit of tracks would that be considered a new game?

Knowing several musicians that love the game, and as someone who enjoys playing music myself, I have to disagree with this...And Ian likes Guitar Hero, so his idea of what a "music game" should be is obviously skewed...
Why the HELL do you not own No More Heroes? In fact, you don't list a single non-sequel! You complain about a lack of original games, yet you don't support them...

Fair enough, I guess it's just been my experience that friends of mine who are "musicians" have felt the game was not very rewarding. So perhaps it isn't that easy to simplify, but bottom line, it isn't a bad game, nor is it really a game. But playing with a group of people is rewarding and in a similar way to how it is with Wii Sports.

There's still several Wii Ware titles I plan on downloading over the holiday so my list is likely to change before the end of the year.
Of course I can say without a doubt that Smash Bros and Wario Land will remain at the very top.

No, T&C is a parody of art that only critics can like. Wii Music is mass market and you've shown in the past that you are the kind of critic that T&C is geared towards.

1. Wii Music 2. Disaster 3. No More Heroes 4. Ferrari Challenge 5. Shaun White Snowboarding
Other highlights for me include Wii Fit, De Blob, Alien Crush Returns.
It's a bit early to be doing this list since the year isn't over, and there is still a major release to come out here in World of Goo. I didn't put Mario Kart Wii there because it's unfair to other games being the best game of ALL TIME, and it's not just a game it's a whole lifestyle, plus it's kind of insulting to the game itself to be merely part of a list when it's so much more.
If you're a musician, guess what it's worthless because all of the concepts that make the game magical are commonplace for you.

It's rewarding if you're creative, period.
Also while I do enjoy the new Animal Crossing a lot, it's far from a good game, Nintendo barely even did development on it, it probably has LESS additions than the Play on Wii games, it still is one huge scam and a missed opportunity, thank god the game is flopping. The new graphics look very nice though, and I guess that's a big part of the game.
Disappointment has to be Brawl, just not that fun to play. There's worse games but I was excited about Brawl.

Where exactly is AC flopping? The game is doing quite well. It is laughable people say it has less additions that the Wii make because it is a baseless argument:
1. Ability to use Voice Chat 2. Updated visuals 3. Vastly more items, and collectables 4. A city to visit along with some areas that AC fans will appreciate like everyone's favorite mole in addition to the Academy hall. 5. Many more animals 6. Holidays have been tweaked with some additions 7. Mushroom hunting in fall 8. Solid and stable online experience 9. Greater personalization and design for clothing 10. USB Keyboard support for texting or writing mail
Is it a gigantic leap forward. Of course not, it is a pretty by the books upgrade but it is also far from a port. Actually I find the experience to be much better than the DS one because I can relax and play it at home with all the additions the DS version brought to the game along with City Folk's very own additions.
Not to mention even if it was a "port" of the DS game, it doesn't make it any less of a great gameplay experience. It is like saying if they rereleased Mario Galaxy that it isn't "good" because they didn't change anything. Maybe value wise it may not be good but the game itself still remains great.

Come on, we don't want to sour this best games thread with an AC debate do we? The difference is this isn't a re-release, Nintendo are trying to pass it off as a whole new game, it's had three years potential development time. That sounds like a Super Mario Advance press release. Nintendo hardly even had to think when making this game. Remember when Nintendo sequels used to be really new and surprising?
It's Nintendos big holiday game and not even in the top 10 in the US, debuted at #37 or something in the UK and outsold by games like Rabbids TV Party, and is also doing terrible here despite having commercials and advertising everywhere you look. I'm sure it's made big profit considering the development, but it's not a big mainstream hit.
I think it's the best AC too but I really can't give the game praise when standing next to such brand new games like Disaster and No More Heroes and proper sequels with incredible new gameplay mechanics on top of blistering new content like Mario Kart Wii.

1. No More Heroes 2. Okami 3. Wario Land Shake It
Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii if I have to pick a 4 and 5. I was disappointed in both of them though. And Wii Fit isn't a game. DS had a FAR better year. Good morning, Crono.
Why the HELL do you not own No More Heroes? In fact, you don't list a single non-sequel! You complain about a lack of original games, yet you don't support them...
Christ, like this needs to be said again.

I honestly don't know if I should enjoy all the angst or groan at the fact that we can't even do a top five game list without someone dragging it down with angst, big words, angst, anger, angst and bitching.
Oh ****, real life is imitating anime!

Let's NOT become neoGAF, mmmkay?
Anyways, I'm not gonna call this a top 5 of my favorite of the year, just a top 5 of games I feel warmest about so far (haven't gotten around to playing so many games T_T) and can think of right now from the year 2008:
5. Strong Bad CG4AP 4. Toki Tori 3. Mario Kart Wii 2. de Blob 1. No More Heroes
Honorable Mentions:
We Cheer Wii Fit Super Smash Bros. Brawl Zoo Hospital
WTF Game of the year:
Imagine Monkeyz

I can't mention Mario Kart on my list cuz, like Mario, it's not fair to other games, and it can get in the way of life.
I can't list Brawl cuz I get sick of it easily. If I play it one night, I don't want to see for at least a month. It becomes non-fun and non-appealing after 2 hours of sword people and space animals.

I don't own No More Heroes because the whole thing reaks of style over substance. It's made by the Killer 7 guy and not fact alone turned me off of it.
I don't support original games like it's some duty. I support games that catch my interest. A new IP still has to catch my interest. The Wii gets pathetic third party support so I don't buy many third party exclusives. Most of them would be minor b-titles on a different console. They just aren't giving us the stuff that pops out. Meanwhile Nintendo makes nothing BUT sequels these days, except for their non-games. Why is my list all sequels? Because that's all Nintendo gives to core gamers these days. I really would like to see some new stuff from them that isn't b-level import stuff or a non-game.
I would be more open to some of the quirky third party games on the Wii but the thing is the people that really push them on these forums push EVERYTHING that is even remotely competent. The Wii (and likely the last few years of the Cube) has created a fanbase that celebrates mediocrity. When someone lists every competent game they can think of as "must play" Wii third party games I tone it out. All of it. Even if something truly worthwhile is hidden in there.
Now if someone who acknowledges that the Wii third party support is unacceptable crap, and by far the worst third party support a market leading console has ever had, then I'm more inclined to take their recommendations. They recognize the same problems I do so if THEY think some unique new third party IP is great then it must be pretty good. But "rah rah the Wii is the best Nintendo console ever" people are not going to convince me to buy anything.

So you only take recommendations from people who hate the Wii, got it...
I'd personally recommend taking hints from people that enjoy games, but whatever...

Did you notice that the game is on almost everyone's top 5 list? Maybe you should reconsider judging games before you've given them a fair chance.

This is the list I have so far of what I have played:
1. Super Smash Brothers Brawl 2. Animal Crossing: City Folk 3. de blob 4. Mario Kart Wii 5. Tetris Party
I can't say it's completely finished, because I haven't been able to play Wario Land Shake It, Dokapon Kingdom, Boom Blox, Tales of Symphonia 2, or World of Goo yet.
Brawl was everything I wanted it to be. It met all my expectations, but I wish I had more people around here to play it with.
City Folk has really been keeping my interest. I enjoy it a lot more than WW on the DS, and it's just nice to relax to after coming home from work.
de blob was just such a surprise. I didn't know much about it until I played it, but I just enjoy the experience. I hope they turn it into a series.
Mario Kart Wii has a few multi-player problems, but it's fun and easy to get others to play with you.
Tetris Party just has so many fun ways to play tetris. It's another fun game just to relax with.

Correction: We have, you're just not listening. How many topic have we bitched about 3rd party support on the Wii? On top of that, how many topics have been derailed so we can bitch about 3rd party support on the Wii? It sucks, we all get it. At the same time, most of us (that being basically everyone except you) is willing to admit that there are, in fact, some good 3rd party titles on the Wii (No More Heroes being one of them) and that 3rd party support is getting better. Have you considered that there's no precendence for what Nintendo has done? No 3rd place loser has ever become market leader in one generation. If the average game takes 18-24 months to develop on average and everyone counted the Wii out from the get go, 2009 is a pretty good time frame for support to be improving. I thought it'd be sooner, but better late than never. With House of the Dead Overkill, Madworld, and Dragon Quest 10, looks like better 3rd party support finally on its way. Those games are only some of what has been announced. So, maybe you should stop complaining and play some games. Christ, like this needs to be said again.

There have been many games that more, well, stingy commentators have recommended on the Wii. No More Heroes is definitely one of them, but somehow you manage to dismiss that game, a favorite among Wii critics, out of hand. World of Goo is also another across-the-board critical darling, but then again it's also loved on these boards, heaven forbid, so you may want to think twice about that purchase.
Boom Blocks has also somehow earned high praise from Wii critics, which is what you want. You may be interested to know that I actually don't understand what they're talking about, so the game should have TWO things in its support. If my support for what you call "mediocre" games makes you suspicious, then my reticience on Boom Blocjks may suggest it's worth.
What the big guns are working on is a better indication of Nintendo's direction for 2010.
Fixed. This is Nintendo remember?

Adrock's post has warmed my cold heart.
Sadly, my top 5 list for 2008 won't be accurate until at least 2012 at the rate I'm going. I have yet to play several games from other people's lists. I know SSBB and No More Heroes will make the list, though.

Ian won't even give an awesome $20 game like No More Heroes a chance? Geez, it's only $20! Even if you hate it you aren't out much, but I doubt you would hate it. Its the best Wii sword-fighting game I've ever seen so far, bar none, and is probably the best we are going to see until Motion Plus comes out. Its hard to see how you could improve on the controls for that game anymore without motion plus. It is perfect.
Until you at least rent this game and give it a try you have forfeited your right to bitch about 3rd party support on the Wii. None of your complaining in that respect will have any validity until you give this a chance.

People like Ian are the reason 3rd party support on Nintendo consoles has always been difficult. He complains 3rd parties don't support the Wii, and then once in awhile a company will release a quality game to test the waters, so what does people like Ian do then? They ignore it! They don't buy it, regardless of what word of mouth or reviews say about it, and months later they're still complaining quality 3rd party games aren't there.
Well gee, I wonder why. Maybe the fact you didn't buy the games when they did come out has something to do with it. 3rd parties will cite the lack of sales to justify not coming out with more games, and so it is a vicious cycle. The only way to break the cycle is to reward 3rd parties who come out with quality games, and that means to actually buy those games instead of ignoring them or inventing reasons to bitch about them when you never even gave them a chance. If you aren't part of the solution then you're part of the problem, so if you aren't even going to try 3rd party games then you have no right to complain about them.

I have not played many of the games on some of these lists (goo, mm9, endless ocean, etc) - however I have played several levels of No More Heroes and hated it.... actually I couldn't stand the combat system at all. I'm curious as to how you folks did. It managed to be boring and frustrating all at the same time.

Why is it difficult ? Smash A and to finish Gesture Left/Right, Up/ Down. You can lift up the wiimote for higher attacks and tilt down for lower.
Felt like a great mix of button smashing and gestures. I thought it was so damn satisfying and fun to battle.

5. Lost Winds (Short, but fun) 4. Megaman 9 (I love the fact that another old school Megaman game was made) 3. Animal Crossing: City Folk (I'm quite dissapointed by the fact that it's more of the same, but I still enjoy it none the less. Also, if they are going to reuse music, why not take the superior soundtrack from the GCN version?) 2. Mario Kart Wii (I'm addicted to it. My main gripes are the friend code system and the fact that you can't have 1 on 1 versus) 1. Super Smash Bros Brawl (Basically the same game, but bigger and badder. Great for multiplayer, but they should really ditch the whole friend code thing!)
- These are really the only games that I bought this year for the Wii aside from virtual console. This has been a sort of slow year for Nintendo. I'm itching to try out No More Heroes and Okami, but at the moment I am low on funds. Hopefully 2009 is more exciting! I want to see some really big, OMG Super Mario Galaxy/Ocarina of Time moments..... and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel to Megaman Legends :P I think that series would be perfect for the Wii!

Yes you can. On the screen where you select whether you want to play a Solo or Team VS race, there is a little blue circle on the top right of the screen; select it to go to the options screen where you can turn off the computer players. This same option menu can also be found on the battle mode select screen.
