Title: The top N64 features
Post by: Snipper64 on December 08, 2008, 07:43:15 PM
You get three votes to pick your favorite add-ons and ideology of the n64. Yes, this is similar to my other survey(s) (yes, could be more to come).
The wii has some cool features, such as wi-fi, and awesome graphics, wireless controller, but sometimes I miss the bulky controllers and other things about the N64.
My top 3- Cheats (God, I miss them. The flaming teddy bear company who made Battle tanx and Army man used cheats to it's fullest. And in turok, it was fun to kill simple enemies with a nuke beam with unlimited ammo)
The Controller itself (What can I say, I miss not flailing my hands around to make Mario do a simple jump, the wired controllers where much more in tuned as well)
Multilayer (while the wii has allot of wi-fi battle games, I miss the old games where as much time was put into multilayer as it was in single player... Battle Tanx... cough)
What are yours?

On top of my list is Cheats. I liked the cheats in Turok 2 also Vigilante 8. I haven't really seen many games use cheats that much this gen. Multiplayer was a plus also I had lots of friends during the N64 era so I needed lots of Multiplayer games. Turok 2, WWF No Mercy, WCW/NWO Revenge, Mario Kart 64, and SSB was fun. I liked that there was lots of variety of games as well. Lots to chose from. As the saying goes "Variety is the spice of life"

My List was Multiplayer, The Controller and Saving Games to Cartridge.
The Nintendo 64 to this day feels like the best Party System with only the Wii coming in a close second. 4 Controller Ports and Several GREAT games to play with a group made it awesome. Other systems were on the edge with online gaming, but the Nintendo 64 was better at all around local multiplayer fun.
The Controller, looking back the Nintendo 64 controller wasn't perfect, but it was innovative and it it was a great controller for games built around the controller. The Trigger button was especially awesome and no other controller before or after has had such a great button.
Saving games to the cartridge. You forget how convenient it was to bring your game over to a friends house and play with all you unlocked goodies, levels, characters and such until you bring a disc over to a friends house on your Wii or 360, or PS3. I can't wait to how you this mini game or don't worry everything is unlocked...only to realize your save is on your hard drive. This was never a problem with the Nintendo 64...and one of the reasons cartridges are still rad.

Cartridges: Gotta love NO LOAD TIMES and being able to take your game pak with you to a friends and have all your progress come with you even if you forgot your memory pak (I may not be able to dress up my lil bomberman for multiplayer but at least all my progress is saved!)
Controllers x4: The controller was awesome for many reasons; analogue stick, Z-trigger (best placed button ever), it was like an all-terrain controller and the fact that you could plug four of them in (without need of a special adapter ala the NES/SNES/PS1/PS...2!??! are you freaking serious? The PS2 didnt even have four ports? next gen my ass) and have an easy party.
Expansion Ports: I know the port itself is part of the controller but the memory and rumble paks deserve love all on their own. Sure memory cards were done before, and rumble is standard now (unless you bought a PS3 at launch) but back then they were an awesome thing. The rumble pak always gets more attention for obvious reasons so I don't have to say much here, I will however say that the Nintendo 64 Memory Pak is by far my favorite memory card ever for one simple reason:
You plugged them right into the controller. You didn't have to get up and change it out of the system when your card was full, just swap it outta the controller. Were going to a friends house to play some games wasn't a hastle either, all you needed was the controller and you were good, cuz the memory card was in the damn controller already.
With the Gamecube, you don't know how many times my friend would bring Melee over to my house and forgot the memory card with all stages and characters
D'oh! I would of loved for this to come to the states, I've never wanted anything more than to play me some Mario Artist and be able to import my images into other games... *sigh*

I was talking about how much the GC sucked compared to the N64 in this case. Fixed it.

The N64 controller was the greatest. I felt that the GC controller was more comfortable, but you can't beat that D-pad and the Z-Button. Those were the two things the GC controller slipped up on, and the N64 controller had in spades. The Z-button on the GC controller just felt weird. I still don't like where it is, but I'm more than used to it now (thank you, Smash Bros.).

Everyone forgets the Second Memory Pack for the Expansion Pack that allowed the 64DD to run and added another 16 MEGS RAM to the Nintendo 64.
Though the Melee on the Nintendo 64 was a hacked ROM and not official.

The analog stick specifically. The controller itself was flawed, even the analog stick was flawed (it's not really analog and it's flimsy), but it was an important hallmark for the industry.

A tip for all N64 owners: grease up your analogue stick with ceramic grease. It will virtually eliminate all wear and tear through normal use. You'll have to apply it about once a year though, as the stuff seems to evaporate or something...
Anyways, I chose these options:
The Controller itself The N64 controller is my favourite controller, three-prong monstrosity that it is. Its bulkiness actually made it very comfortable to hold, and it is lighter than it looks... unless you stick a rumble pack in it. The buttons are all easy to reach as well, and the six face buttons opens many possibilities.
Most of it's games were multiplayer friendly Damn straight. At the time there were no better multiplayer games available, and the four controller ports included on the system brought gaming parties to the next level. Who doesn't have fond memories of playing at least one multiplayer N64 game, be it Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, Bomberman, Smash Brothers, Mario Party, or any other one of the myriad of titles available.
It moved gaming into 3-D Nothing I can really say about this which hasn't been covered before.

Really? It still has some important games that used the control stick better than some games today.

My choices included, 1) It moved gaming into 3-D : For obvious reasons the jump from snes as a kid was immense, when my brother got the N64 in '98. (Yeah we were a little late to upgrade) 2) The Controller itself : It just felt so right, the care free spraying with the Z button on Goldeneye was great. I also liked how the c buttons are used in SSB, and Zelda. 3) Most of it's games were multiplayer friendly : Nothing could beat the memories of playing 4 player games on the N64. All of my favorite multiplayer N64 games were already listed. And the statement brought up about it being way easier to use and set up than then the ps1 and ps2's multi-tap is so true. The N64 was definitely one of my favorites and the better of any other system of its time.

I think a lot of people liked it. Something that is interesting because reviews didn't like it much.

The N64 itself -f It gave rise the Gamecube's Waffle Iron Port (not Porn as i just typed..), and the Wii's Classic Controller clippy thing.

I chose exactly what you chose mop_it_up and derekkrawr! wow!
I have to repeat love of the N64 controller. I felt it was perfect, really, even for FPS games.
3D isn't so unique in itself but Nintendo had to reinvent all their major franchises for it, and THAT gave me what I consider a golden era in Nintendo gaming.
And multiplayer. 4 controller ports was heaven, not just in Mario Kart but also Gauntlet 64.
