Title: The top N64 games

Ello all.
Well, the newsest podcast (10th zelda special) got me thinking of the peak of what I view of the nintendo empire, the N64. While the nes and snes, and even the gamecube are great, I mess the age of N64... As for the wii, the wii is the death of nintendo's hardcore games (ok, a few good ones, but only a few, wi-fi is by far the best part about it, I love BW2 and MoH2).
Anyways, I have decided to try to make the largest N64 poll here on RFN. I request the final results of the top 10 games ever gets listed on a future podcast, hopefully, if this is a big hit. I tryed to include the big games, but I am sorry if I messed any ones you injoyed.
Keep up the good podcast RFN.... and err... the forums too!

These are the games I voted for The legend of Zelda:OoT, SSB,Paper Mario,Pokemon Stadium 1, WWF No Mercy. Why did I pick these? Well apart from being good games they also have memories attached to them. The Legend of Zelda:OoT I remember because I was nearing the end of the game and I was doing side quests the Masks and planting those hover leaves. I had to go out to March AFB to get my Military ID card renewed. So I left.Upon my arrival to my room I noticed that my N64 and games were gone. I was upset about it. This would be a reoccurring theme. I bought 4 N64's in the lifespan of the console.
SSB: I remember doing all of the various modes and unlocking the characters with my friends.
Pokemon Stadium 1:I remember going head to head vs Mew while I I used Mewtwo.I remember beating the other Pokemon easily. When Mew came out I sent out Mewtwo. My Mewtwo had Psychic, Ice Beam, Thunder Bolt and Recover. I was at first attacking with IB and TB since Psychic wouldn't be that effective after Mew using Softboiled many times. I changed tactics I started using Psychic. You may ask why but Psychic has a secondary effect of lowering the Special stat. I thought if I could get some of Mews special down my other attacks would be more effective.Well my plan worked! I also remembering trying different teams vs Mewtwo in the 6 vs Mewtwo battle.
WWF No Mercy I recall it being a great game but there was a glitch that erased the created characters it was annoying.Great game other than that problem.
Paper Mario was just a great game with lots of great characters with great personalities.
Honorable Mentions: Turok 2: Seeds of Evil and Vigilante 8 for great Multiplayer and great codes.

Five options isn't enough, I want to choose every single game. Although one of my choices was the "one of my choices were not on this list" option, there are actually 242 other games I wanted to select.

The WCW games were World tour and Revenge.Revenge was the better of the two. WWF had Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy.

1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - The classic that brought the epic series to the third dimension. Great dungeons, great characters, great music...The game has since dropped out of my top ten due to the improvement of the formula, but Ocarina of Time will always hold a special place in my heart...
2) Super Mario 64 - Nothing beats a Mario platformer...And there's still the beautiful memories of heading back home with my new N64 on launch day, only to bask in 3D glory for the first time...
3) Banjo-Kazooie - After Mario 64, I still lusted for platforming goodness...Hearing that Rare was coming out with their own, I held my pants in anticipation, and was not disappointed...Taking the Mario 64 formula and adding in crazy characters and tight level design, the game is the closest any developer has come to Nintendo's own Mario series...
4) Goldeneye - The epitome of the multiplayer FPS...And it has yet to be beat...Yeah, **** Halo...It's also a movie license game that's good!
5) Star Fox 64 - What do you get when take an awesome shooter and make it even more awesome? Star Fox 64! With a perfect balance in variety and a colorful cast (all with their hilariously awesome and cheesy voiced dialogue), it created an experience that has yet to be topped in the genre...

I fixed that, I'm sorry XD Oringanaly I was only going to give 10 options to chose from, but decided you needed more because the N64 has a wide varity...
Also, I have to give a shout out to my favrite, banjo kazzoie series.
There is no game compareible to it, as the guy (err... or girl) said above me, It was rares mario. It had the humor, the levels seemed endless like hyrule field, and the charectors were priceless. Being able to change animals, fly, and learn new moves was a huge plus as well, it wouldn't kill mario to go out and learn a few new moves besides.... err... spinning...

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. In addition to being my number one N64 game it's number 2 all time among all games. It was my first real Zelda experience and still my favorite, beating all the others in the series except Link's Awakening by a wide margin.
2. Super Mario 64. This one's 4th all time overall for me, my first ever Virtual Console purchase, and despite what some may tell you holds up extremely well apart from the camera, which is still quite a bit better than other games of the era.
3. Star Fox 64. The third N64 game in my personal top 5 at number 5, it was one of the two games I got with my N64 along with Super Mario 64. The only thing I'd change about this game is to include a save system.
4. Perfect Dark. Some people say that GoldenEye was the best FPS on the N64; those people are all wrong. Some of my best gaming memories came from this game's multiplayer.
5. Mario Kart 64. Another game that I have tons of great multiplayer memories with. Even though it's been surpassed by the DS and Wii entries in the series it deserves its spot on this list because of its excellent tracks, especially the greatest multiplayer arena in the history of video games, Block Fort..

Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Super Mario 64
GoldenEye 007
Super Smash Bros.
Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 were revolutionary. Majora's Mask might be tied for my favorite Zelda game ever (4-way tie!!). I was in high school during the N64 era, so my buddies and I played literally countless hours of GoldenEye and Smash Bros. The N64 was the golden-age of multiplayer gaming for me.

acclaim made wwf warzone, and wwf attitude, but then the company that made the wcw game Aki/asmik(thq) took over the license and made great wwf wrestlemania 2000 and wwf no mercy

hahaha. four of the games i voted for I'm the only vote. Majora's Mask is why I love zelda. I loved the story and the wild gameplay turns it had. Rolling around as goron link is as of yet unmatched. The music element was stellar and the fetch questing stuff with the masks was implemented well enough as to not come off too forced.
Ogre Battle 64 is too good for it's own good. The battle system kicked butt and the battle system really really kicked butt. It's still the best rpg ever made in my book.
Mario Golf got me into sports gaming. My little sister and I got hours and hours and hours of this game. The mini golf alone was brilliant. It had a great cast of characters and fantastic courses.
Diddy Kong Racing is better than Mario kart to me. The planes and hover boats added muchos muchos value to the typical kart racer. The Adventure mode was excellently implemented even if some of the bosses were stupid cheap the second time around.
Harvest Moon 64 was my Animal Crossing through middle school and into high school. Only God knows how many hours I've stuffed into that game. It's just a fun fun experiance for me.

My picks in no particular order:
1. Super Mario 64 - The sole reason I wanted a video game console more than any console EVER. Back then the internet was non-existent to me so any news i got was Nintendo Power mags I'd read at TRU (i was a kid, and my mom didnt want to pay for a subscription lol) and for a time I ignored any info on the "ULTRA 64" other than the oddly shaped controler, because I was having so many damn SNES games i wasn't even thinking about getting another system at the time.
The kicker was when i went back to TRU and they had the demo kiosks set up and i was able to try that bad boy out. My god... I never felt floored by a video game before that moment, or after to be honest. The jump from 2D to 3D for Nintendo was this epic moment in time that I'll never forget and to see Mario run and jump and tip toe etc was an amazing sight to behold. Everything felt so new but at the same time felt so familiar, and felt like a Mario game tried and true.
2. Majoras Mask - I'll be honest, OoT was going to be here at first but its pretty cliche (i know i know, as if Mario 64 wasn't) but whatever, I really wanna give some love to the second black sheep in Zelda's history. Another moment of honesty here, on my first play thru of the game I gave up at the start of the Stone Tower Temple. There was something at the very beginning that i overlooked, and another part where i knew what to do and i just wasn't working so i got frustrated and never went back to the game until much later, when playing thru it on the Zelda Collectors Edition disk for the GC. It wasn't until that second time thru the game, after playing thru every zelda game prior to it (on said disk), that I came to appreciate it more than OoT. Not that that game doesn't hold a special place in my heart, anyone that calls themself a true gamer will remember the day that Zelda was brought into 3D and call it a special moment, but it was the differences in Majoras Mask that made it special. The darker story and characters, the different gameplay mechanics, and the difficulty it had over its predecessor.. only after i matured into a slightly older, slightly wiser gamer did i realize how magnificent this game really was.
3. [/b]Goldeneye 007[/b] - The one game so insanely good, you forget its even a license game! My first experience with the game was at a friends house, and it was a strictly multiplayer affair with him and another friend. It was frantic, I'd never played a game like that before (being a console only gamer back then). I never even saw the film GoldenEye until after playing the game so it wasn't until after seeing it that I thought the game was even MORE amazing because I watched all the environments and characters from the game come to life before me, as opposed to the opposite effect of seeing those same characters and settings shrink down to blocky clones of themselves (lol). Goldeneye was a great solo player game for me, loved the objectives and the higher difficulties kept me coming back for me, but of course the main draw was the multiplayer. This is the one game (other than Smash Bros) that kept me and my friends hooked to the tv for hours. We had our first gaming parties to this game, now thats something special.
4. Star Fox 64 - A game that took everything from its SNES little brother, stuck a needle in its arm and pumped it up full of steroids. When this game hit, i knew it was a must have. When i first played it at a cousins house on their big screen tv with the legendary Rumble Pak, I knew i had to have it asap. Everything about it is perfect. The graphics still look great to this day (same can't be said for most n64 games sadly), the music accompanies the epic gameplay and the Rumble Pak really immersed you into the game like nothing else at the time. It's sad that we take rumble for granted now, sometimes barley noticing its there. Man this game rocks, I can't say anything bad about it to be honest, its one of those games i'll still go back and play today, and do thanks to the virtual console!
5. Harvest Moon 64 - And heres one out of left feild! Didn't see that coming after picking other legendary n64 games huh? I hope I'm not the only one to show this gem some love. Like Star Fox, its another game that amped up its SNES counterpart yet still added enough new things to the formula to keep it fresh and entertaining. I loved the original farming sim, which i didnt own but borrowed often, so getting this sequel was a no brainer for me. My favorite part of the game was that it never ended. You got the same evaluation after X 'years' of game time but you could go on and on after that, keeping your awesome little house, your award winning cows, etc. It's one of those simple games thats so fun to play, and it didn't matter how repetitive it was. The style of it was fun and drew you into its little world, and the way the NPC's developed relationships with you and eachother over time was something that added a depth that was missing from the original version. Everything about the game made you wanna come back for more, every day. To date no other Harvest Moon title has done it better than this, and you can quote me on that.

Mario Kart 64 (still the best feeling MK to play with an control stick
Bomberman 64 (tons of multiplayer fun, customizable bomberman costumes FTW and how can you not love THIS! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XTLG4_Om7c)
Perfect Dark (better than goldeneye yes, but never got as many multiplayer hours with as many people as GE)
Smash Bros (its freaking smash bros! but its overshadowed by its newer brethren)

Sadly, this thread will probably be locked as a poll. But before that happens, I'd like to suggest a different option.
Just put in the reader review section. Reader review doesn't get used to often and in many ways this is like a review thread with people reviewing games and rating them or ranking them in this case. What do you say mods? Care to let the reminiscing stay alive?

Lylat Wars is without a doubt the best game on N64. It just brought domination and fistworthyness to a whole new level.
I also voted for Perfect Dark, Paper Mario, Ocarina of Time and Super Mario. If I could ahve a 6th vote, 1080° Snowboarding.

I hated Star Fox 64 when I first got it. Actually, I only hated the graphics and music. I beat the game, but it didn't become one of my all time favorites until I put it away for a year. When I came back to it, it was "old" and forgivable for its ugly beach ball explosions that sometimes didn't appear in the right place, not to mention its cringe-inducing instrument sounds. Maybe I just learned to ignore that stuff during that time. Regardless, without being distracted by all of that nonsense, I discovered some of the best gameplay ever developed. I loved it, and I will never forgive Nintendo for destroying the franchise. I suppose they wanted to innovate, but in the process they lost what made Star Fox fun in the first place. Here's a hint, Nintendo: It's not the stupid "Furries In Spaaaaaace!" plot.

There was a lot of awesome, I admit. One of my favorite bits was the way a charged shot hit the water on Corneria. I just couldn't stand the inflating beach ball explosions, especially the one that goes off in midair above the Attack Carrier when it hits the water. I might never have made such a big deal about it if they had simply made it explode on the water like it was supposed to. Of course, the Area 6 boss (Gorgon?) would still stand as an example of how to make a good looking explosion without that cheesy effect, so maybe not.
Like I said before, it didn't really matter in the long run. It wasn't the first time Nintendo made a graphical design decision that I thought looked stupid, and it definitely wasn't the last. Take Ganondorf's cape in OoT, for example. When he falls over, it falls through his body and pools under him. It pulled me straight out of the game when it happened. It could have been avoided, too, by simply having him lose the cape during the fight. But whatever. I only nitpick because I love.

Oh god i hated that too. I lied to myself as a kid constantly until i firmly believed that it wasn't a regular cape, but made of his essence and when it pooled out that way, it turned into blood.

Do you guys want me to make a poll for the Nes, Snes, and gamecube? (Maybe even the wii)? I would be more then happy to do this. I like making these type of polls, I get to see for myself what games I should get, but with better info then just plain reviews....
May I make those other polls mods? (nes, snes, Gamecube, wii?)

Don't make any more polls now. If you try to do too many at once discussion will drop off significantly. You're better waiting a couple weeks until this discussion has run its course and then creating a new one.

I agree with Vudu.I personally think that the Wii poll should wait till the console has run its course.If you can't wait that long maybe 6 months or a yearly poll. As to other systems I want to see a GB poll.

I had gotten out of gaming and was only a very casual player of the SNES. When the N64 launched I didn't really care about it too much. I figured it cost too much for me to worry about anyway.
Then my wife surprised me with one for my birthday and I was hooked.
I'm just saying for me the N64 is a classic system with so many memories that you could never list enough games. And true classics are on the system that have yet to be rivaled on any other console. Zelda, Mario, Goldeneye, Banjo (well, the majority of Rare games really), Turok, Doom, Quake, etc... I love my N64 and would be happy to have it and my library of games on a desert island.

This list was easier to go through than the SNES list, however, at the same time you made us drop one game we could vote for which makes it harder.
In the end, I chose the games I played the most and enjoyed the most:
Super Mario 64 Legend of Zelda OoT Super Smash Bros. Perfect Dark Mario Tennis (But I would like to add to that Mario Golf as well)
These games were all great games...but there are so many games to add to this list. F-Zero, Star Fox 64, Paper Mario, Goldeneye.

I do believe that Perfect Dark is the best FPS on the Nintendo 64.
My favorite memory was setting 8 bots on a team against my friend and I on the stage with the Glass floor (Best level in the game) and turning on the cheat for slow deaths, which slowed everything down, and going to work killing over 999 bots. It took hours, but it was so much fun.
Perfect Dark literally did so many things right, that the game was close to Perfect.
