Title: The "What DS game should I get thread?"...thread
Post by: Djunknown on December 02, 2008, 01:31:59 AM
If this thread already exists somewhere in this category, mods, act accordingly.
So I finally plunked down and got a DS on Black Friday. I got the red Mario Bundle, and am enjoying my trip back to 2006. Whether I got ripped off is another story/irrelevant.
So basically, I have some 4 years of gaming of catching up. To start off, I'd like to know what everyone's top 10 DS they have/highly recommend. It can the ten best you own, the ten best of a particular genre, the 10 best of a particular year (i.e top 10 of 2005), 10 best underrated titles, ten best wi-fi games, etc, etc.
So yeah, recommend away! After that, if people need to ask what title they should get, do that too.

Any Castlevania you can find. All Ace Attorney games (be sure to play them in the order they were released since they have an ongoing story and massive spoilers, the order is Phoenix Wright, Justice for All, Trials and Tribulations, Apollo Justice). Both Megaman ZX games. Bangai-O. New Super Mario Bros. DK Jungle Climber. Glory Days 2.
That should keep you occupied for now.

Contra 4 - You must attack aggressively. Custom Robo Arena - If you don't have the Gamecube version, this is a winner. Mario Kart - COME ON Trauma Center - I have the first one, pretty much crippled my hand playing that game. It's that hardcore. Advanced Wars Dark conflict - To get you thinking again.
KDR has covered all my other recommendations.

You guys did NOT just ignore Hotel Dusk...HOTEL DUSK! Also:
Phantom Hourglass (Zelda) Phoenix Wright/Ace Attorney series if you like Adventure/Point-and-Clicks Professor Layton if you like puzzles and mind-benders...

If you have the Wii version of Mario Kart, the DS game doesn't feel good. I don't recommend mixing the two.
Contra 4 I'm not big on. Phoenix Wright is too niche, watch some youtube movies first.
Play Canstlevania: Dawn of Sarrow or Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. Phantom Hourglass is a great choice, being one of the best DiS games ;)

I can only recommend 10 DS games? Ok I'll try. Hotel Dusk. Not just for girls like Bill, Hotel Dusk is like reading a detective novel. Another Code. Sublime adventuring, better puzzles than Hotel Dusk, an evening well spent. Any Castlevania. But I hear this new one is the best. Either Advance Wars. Dual Strike is an overload of a game. Dark Conflict is stripped down and filtered for purity. Also has online multi. A Puzzle game. You only need one. Tetris/Puzzle League/Meteos/Bust-a-Move, whatever. Pokémon Pearl. Harvest Moon: Rune Factory. Theme Park. Kirby Kanvas Kurse, Anno 1701, Phantom Hourglass, Lost in Blue3MarioKartShadowsofAlmiaNinjagaidenracedriverstarfoxtraumacentreworms2theworldendswithyousoulbubblesmariobros OH **** I BROKE THE RULES HUH?

Don't tell him to buy Star Fox Command, that game is terribly flawed.

Oh right, I didn't see Zelda on my shelf, good that someone remembered.
Contra 4 isn't for me either, second hardest Contra game I played and I think that's too hard even for Contra. 1-3 were nowhere close.
I think Castlevania has been going downwards with PoR and OoE (from what I played so far) a bit, the games are more linear with a minimal amount of exploration, I hate that combination since it means you have to guess which directions are for exploration and which direction gets you farther at an intersection so you don't miss a tiny room and have to backtrack through half the level later on. The linear design also makes backtracking harder since there aren't as many pathes you can take and you have to run through pretty much the whole length of the level even if you come back later. I hate linear games with permanent bonuses you have to explore for, always turns into a game of "guess which direction does not progress you through the game".

Star Fox command wasn't that bad. It has issues, but I think it got ripped on a little too hard. If you can get on on a bargain, it is definitely worth a play.
Contra 4 is Hard, but surprisingly fair compared to the old contras and with some weapon combos you pretty much break some of the levels.
I would recommend Dark Conflict over Dual strike. Yes DC does feel a little striped down, it is a much better game. Fog of war is actually enjoyable to play. Ship to ship combat is finally fleshed out and the new carrier is awesome (Fleet ops). Ground combat is a little bit more tactical, you still need tanks to attack, but you have better defense options that doesn't involve spamming tanks back. Motorbikes.

Any or all Castlevanias, Yoshi's Island DS, Chrono Trigger DS, Sonic Rush Adventure.
I tried to choose ones that haven't already been mentioned except for the Castlevania games, I love those. If you like old 2d sonic games the Rush games are actually good compared to the console crap.

Stay away from Phantom Hourglass unless you want your eyes to burn out and your brain to explode after a few minutes of playing it.
I recommend:
Mario Kart DS Professor Layton Mystery Case Files NSMB Chrono Trigger Final Fantasy IV Animal Crossing

New Super Mario Bros is a good choice.
Already got that one with the Mario Red bundle ;). Loving every minute of it, though I gotta say playing semi-pseudo poker with Luigi is one of my highlights. My friends who visited during the Thanksgiving break went crazy with the mini-games, leaving behind impossible records for me to break.
Seems like Castlevania:any subtitle pretty is unanimous. I'll look into Sonic Rush so that it will remind me that Sonic is capable of being good :P
Another common link is any adventure game, so I'll look at some info and reviews. You can't have a handheld without a puzzle game, so I'll fill that void.
That should be the tagline if they advertise it. I'll check out the demo!
Thanks for the recommendations, that'll give me something to chew on for a while.

Why oh WHY do people keep insisting that Sonic Rush is a good game?! It's better than some of Sega's recent crap, sure, but the game focuses so much on speed that all you have to do is hold right for a few seconds and YOU WIN.

Checked out the Soul Bubbles demo, it is very enjoyable. They should have had an option where you can blow into the mic 8)

Is Tecmo Bowl a good choice? I don't play a lot of football games (I only own NFL2K3) but I want something different.

It's a similar story to Sonic. Nostalgic idiots insisting it's good when it isn't.

My top 10 favorites in no particular order
Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Kirby Canvas Curse The World Ends With You Advance Wars: Days of Ruin New Super Mario Brothers Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 Meteos Animal Crossing: Wild World Chrono Trigger LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

If you have nostalgia for Tecmo Bowl or Super Tecmo Bowl like me, then you'll probably like Kickoff. If Kickoff is your first introduction to the series, then it could be completely hit or miss.

Bumping this thread since its the summer season, that means more time for meaty RPG/SRPGS! Thinking about getting some, but as usual, there's so much to pick..
So for the next couple of posts, put your top 10 RPG/SRPG's. Yes, The World Ends With You has been taken into consideration but I'd like to know what else is there, mainstream and obscure alike.

What RPG's/SRPG's do you have?

My RPG picks, trying to avoid the obvious ones.
Super Robot Taisen Og Saga:Endless frontier Just picked this up myself, is very awesome so far. The battle system is very unique, and hard to explain, it's almost a fighting game, it's very similar to the paper mario games, but more awesome. So far the story is pretty interesting, has Stargate-esque portals, and lots of fanservice BREASTS
Contact One of my favorite DS games, maybe you've overlooked it. It's an action RPG sort of, plays like an MMO almost. You get different costumes, which means different skill sets, an active sort of leveling up system (if you get hit your defense goes up, use swords and you sword skill gets better, etc.). Has, in my opinion, one of the best stories in a video game ever. It's a Grasshopper Studios game, with a story written by Suda 51, and great music. It's short (maybe 12 hours your first time), but It's pretty cheap used these days I think. I've played it every year since its release (So twice I guess...)
Lunar Knights ARPG, A very fun spiritual sequel to Boktai. Has two characters, a melee weapons fighter, and a gun slinger. The story is a little saturday morning, but the isometric dungeon crawling is very fun.

Thanks for the suggestions rbtr, I'll look into those.

Zap, I was a big Tecmo Bowl fan back in the day, and really looked forward to Kickoff, but really didn't like it once I had my hands on it. It feels very very slow, like you're playing underwater. There were better Tecmo Bowl games after Super Tecmo Bowl, and it's hard to regress from that.
As for other DS games (I don't play many RPGs or SRPGs) here's my list. I'll try to keep it to games that haven't been mentioned yet.
Space Invaders Extreme - a great update of a classic, with a neat gameplay-integrated soundtrack, and pretty intense action.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows - I picked this up on a recommendation from Jonny Metts, and it hasn't disappointed. The combat is a bit repetitive, but the animation and the movement feels like EXACTLY what I want from a Spider-Man game. It's a 2D MetroidVania style action platformer.
Retro Game Challenge - A series of brand new retro-style titles. This game was pretty fun, as long as you have an appetite for 8-bit gaming.
NinjaTown - An action-tower defense style game, where you use Ninjas to defend you town against cookie-recipe thieves. Really well written, funny strategy game.

Para bailar la bumpa...
After this horrible travesty, (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=28732.0) the lack of DS-ness was unbearable. I went to Craig's list, ebay, hit up my friends for a reasonably priced used DS-lite, but was able to pick up one up at a hobby shop of all places, for $80 bucks just recently.
Sadly, I'll still have to re-buy NSMB and Ninja Town :'(
Getting this thread back on track, I want to get the people's input on two matters:
A) Top five DS accessories, (best screen protectors, best carrying case, earbuds, etc) B) Top five DS games of 2009 so far. Yes, Zelda isn't that far off, but I've been missing out for the last few months...
Oh yeah, thanks for the tip DrewMG 8)
