Title: IT'S....FINALLY....HAPPENING....

How awesome would it be to see a Pterodactyl flying around a cage in the zoo? Hell, I already laugh my ass off seeing a Sloth Bear.

I'd love to see the mammoth. It must have been an amazing animal.

The idea of resurrecting creatures just to be shoved into exhibits doesn't sit well with me, personally...

Some day, the Outback will bring out a side of mammoth ribs and tip my car over...

Yeah it would be better to clone, let's say a, T-Rex and let it out into the wild!

Some things are best left in the past.

It would be better to just not clone it at all!  Jurassic Park taught us this!  ='D

lol lets re-prove why we got rid of these things in the first place.

Where's the jakovasaurus?

What? You don't have to register. What are you talking about?

I'm more excited at the possibilities of what we learn from them than just watching them.

yep. should i try it in ie?

edit: wierd, you dont needto register in ie. good thing Firefox has a ie tab plug-in :D

i agree that this might be most useful, and a project that will quickly pay for itself, many times over.

And if the genome engineers wanted to conjure up something actually useful:

THE BIOFUELIFER ANTI-ARRHENIUS. Svante Arrhenius would never have invented the greenhouse effect if he’d heard of this cycad plant. It gulped in carbon dioxide and methane through its leaves and exuded streams of high-octane petroleum products through its bark as a defense against beetles. Not only that, it had bright red leaves that were good to eat. Though some said they tasted a little like herring. Florida was once the home of this herbaceous panacea. Converting the entire state to a plantation of these palm trees could solve a lot of problems.

As opposed to capturing a live creature and locking it into an exhibit?

The same could be said about pets as well. Hell, even Superman had a zoo.

Except sometimes the animal in captivity has a lengthier lifespan if it IS kept in captivity rather than left in the wild...

Because what you want in prison is a really long lifespan...

Also these resurrected animals DO have a longer lifespan in captivity since anything is greater than zero :P

That isn't the point...The point is that we need to be doing more to prevent our own era's species from going extinct than to bring back old ones...

Or we could let them die out and then bring them back using the magic of science!

Let's all just kill ourselves then, we'll be brought back by science one day.

How long until the Animal Liberation Front or PETA bombs the zoo to release these "endangered animals" into the world, and how long until we have proven all scientists wrong about the behaviors of dinosaurs because we successfully clone one?

Come to think of it...I don't think I would go see living dinosaurs in a zoo...I watched the movie I know its a bad idea.

That's why you don't clone something dangerous first. You clone the dumbest most harmless animal first.

But what if we miniturize them all & give them an abandoned hawaiian island? or give them strips of open land along the border to give us 24 hour border patrol?

Imagine the new reality show: Border Patrol - Velofficeraptors on the Loose

I would watch it

I was thinking they would need a new acronym first, like People for the Ethical Treatment of Formerly Extinct Terrestrial Archosaurian Reptiles (PETFETAP)?

They would have a field day protesting with this stuff, then one by one, picked off by a hungry pterodactyl

I'm sure PETA and the Animal Liberation Jerks would be eaten by whatever animal they save.  In fact, letting them in to the wild could destroy the regular wildlife, so it'd be a generally bad move.
Also, being proven right/wrong would be the whole point.  Being wrong just gives you more to learn, and isn't that what science is all about?

Exactly. Being proven wrong is just as valuable as being prove right.

Well they'd need ancient DNA from dinosaurs right? Can they get that from fossils?

If they have preserved skin, hair or bone marrow they can.
most likely from a dinosaur that was trapped in a tar pit, or an insect encased in resin (tree sap)

DNA only lasts about 50,000 years.

Here that folks, keep those tube socks well preserved if you plan on having your next-next-next etc of kin clone you.

DNA lasts only 50,000 years or so, an eyeblink of evolutionary time, but genome engineers will eventually get so good at their job, one can surely assume, that they won’t need actual DNA; they will be able to calculate the DNA sequence of any known species by working backward from the genomes of their living descendants. Birds, for instance, evolved from dinosaurs. So put a few nips and tucks in a falcon’s genome and you could doubtless re-create that of a velociraptor. Let’s try resummoning these creatures from their rest in the fossil beds of extinction:

Nah, they get stringy when they get big.

No! That's everything.

I'm looking forward to Sabretoothed tigers myself, but only so I can summon one like a power ranger.

I reckon they'll just end up creating completely new things with all this DNA matching and guessing. Now I know why Nintendos R&D budget has gone up  dramatically with no new console in sight, they are making Pokemon real.
