Title: Dead Space
Post by: Pale on October 15, 2008, 09:00:29 PM
Is there really no Dead Space topic yet?

Hmm.  Well I just finished off the first chapter in one sitting this evening.  Overall, the controls were confusing me at first, but I got used to it.

So far it's super linear, but I kind of like that.  You push a button and it draws a line on the floor of where you have to go for your mission.  It kind of fits with the futuristic vibe.

It's different from RE4... it kind of eases you in a little better, at least so far.  No more than 2 things coming at you at once really.  I also like that.

No HUD is super cool.  I thought it would come off as more gimmicky than anything... but the health on the spine and still feeling like you are "in" the world when checking your map and inventory is very cool.  I also love the communication stuff that comes up with the faces of the people that are talking to you.

Overall, I'm liking the production values a lot and I'm gonna keep playing.  Anyone else pick it up?

I was considering it, but decided against it because I still have Resident Evil 4 to finish off at some point.  There's only so many survival horror games I can have going on at one time.

I picked it up for the 360. I will give it a small playthrough tomorrow just to check it out, as I'm still playing Forza Motorsport 2 as my main 360 game to finish at the moment.

I may pick up the PC version but with so many games coming out not sure if I will anytime soon.

I'm considering renting this or Drakes Fortune on Friday.  I'm leaning toward Drakes b/c I actually want to see what happened to the chick in the plane.  But who knows, those graphics in Dead Space are very impressive so I could still be swayed.

They had a half hour commercial... I mean "special" for it on SciFi and it looks like RE4 in space. I have a friend who was dead set on getting it after just seeing commercials but after seeing the SciFi special he's not even sure if he's interested in it enough to pirate it. :p

Cripes.  You haven't even finished RE4 yet?  You need to stop buying games until you play the ones you purchased two years ago.

Same here, hahaha.  Maybe I'll finish RE4 and No More Heroes this weekend instead.

I haven't finished Majora's Mask yet. No, I'm not going to stop buying new games. I did finish Call Of Duty 2 on the 360 last week. Now working on Resistance Fall of Man.

Maybe they'll "Wii Make" it and I can finish it then.  I just hate the controls.

But anyway, how bout that Dead Space??!

Looks like from most impressions it is yet another shooter with a flash exterior but seemingly drags. I'll hopefully get it soon but right now I'm enjoying so many non-FPS games for the moment.

I own well over a hundred games and I can count the number of them that I've beaten on two hands. Unbeaten games include REmake, RE4, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, All the SNES Mario games...

You get the idea.

Holy ****, you have not beaten some of the best games ever made. I've never played all the way through Majora's Mask (first time I ever played it was on the Wind Waker bonus disc), but all the others I've beaten.

Lets just hope he's finished GTA 4 by now as that is that new "best game ever in the history of games being great and Oscar worthy"....

Too Many!

Note:  I'm not counting games I'm currently playing.

This game sounds interesting, but there's no demo. The relatively small amount of demos is one of the minor annoyances I have with my otherwise good recent 360 purchase.

In comparison to what, PC gaming? The demo selection on the PSN is pathetic, and the Wii is non-existant. I have many hours spent playing demos on my 360. I just don't think its an 'annoyance'. It is an annoyance that some demos are not available at or before the launch of a particular game, Dead Space being one of those...

Tycho drew a comparison of Dead Space to Metroid, and while I didn't think it before I read it, I can't help but agree.

This isn't near as frantic as RE4 or a traditional shooter.  There are frantic moments, but a lot of it is environment.

Combine that with the fact that you are in a location trying to decipher what exactly happened without truly interacting with anyone, and it really starts to sound like Metroid.

I definitely think Metroid fans should check the game out.

OK, now THAT comparison has me intrigued.  I checked out some footage of it, and it did remind me quite a bit of Metroid Prime, but not as action-oriented.

In comparison to how many games there are for the platform. Really it just is this situation, where I wanted a specific game and it wasn't there. It's nowhere near the annoyance as, say, the ridiculously stupid Microsoft Points system that I hate with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns.

I really want to pick the game up but I'll have to put off Gears or Resistance, not to mention Guitar Hero World Tour.

I'd wait until it drops in price.  Resistance, Gears, and GHWT are games that are worthy of your full attention!

I was just plain sick to my stomach in the beginning.. but I've gotten used to that part.  Now I'm just constantly worried about being made to jump.

There are two things that happen that make me jump EVERY time...

Either a ventilation cover makes a loud noise breaking off as a monster breaks through...

Or I come around a corner in a dead silent vacuum only to see a monster that immediately (at still totally silently) jumps on my face.

What in particular made you feel this way?  The looks of the dead bodies, or the controls?

The developers said in an interview the other day they actually studied corpses to really get the looks right.  Man, can't imagine staying late at the office, alone, to do that......

The corpses mostly... what they were willing to do to dead babies is just, kind of, gross.

This game is great in the sense that it is creepy, haunting, startles me from time to time with its eerie environmental sounds. I'm having a blast.

I don't know why I wasn't thinking about renting. So I did. And its a cool game. Playing both easy and hard. Easy, just two or three shots take out an enemy, while on hard you have to shoot off the limbs before they die.

Lining up the slow-mo can be a bit picky, too.

I was really impressed with the opening shot of exiting hyperspace (or whatever they call it here). Very nice lighting. The first time I watched it though the woman's hair had a strange glitch and jutted off her head at an odd angle. It calmed down after she started walking so it wasn't like that glitch with Okami.

For anyone that doesn't know, the Demo is up on the PSN now.  I thought it was creepy as hell!  A lot of reviewers said it wasn't scary enough but I'd guess thats due to them playing it in their cubicle during normal office hours as opposed to alone in your apartment with the lights out.
