Title: Reggie Defends The Line Up
Post by: D_Average on October 07, 2008, 12:09:39 PM
For those interested in what Reggie's current thoughts are, here's a pretty lengthy interview from VentureBeat --> http://venturebeat.com/2008/10/06/qa-with-nintendo-of-america-chief-reggie-fils-aime-on-game-industry-competition/

There's one question in particular I found a bit curious:

VB: Do you think your upcoming hardcore games will answer complaints people had a few months ago at E3 about Nintendo ignoring hardcore gamers?

RF-A: The gaming enthusiast that buys a tremendous amount of games is truly insatiable. As an example, in March, we launched “Super Smash Bros. Brawl.” In April, we launched “Mario Kart.” In later April, we launched “Wii Fit.” Then, in July, at E3, they say, “where are the games?” They say they want the next Mario game. “Super Mario Galaxy” isn’t even a year old yet. We believe today that we have shown a plethora of games and genres that can satisfy the most casual to the most core. Even that doesn’t seem like it’s enough.

We could certainly argue back and forth if the number of current and upcoming Wii games is "enough" for the "core" gamer's appetite, but to include Mario Kart and Wii Fit in the response seems rather odd to me.  Just how exactly did Nintendo train this guy after he left VH1?

Sure, but are both "hardcore" games?

I think the greatest fallacy in NOA's current corporate logic is that they equate people wanting more 'core' games to people wanting new versions of Mario and Zelda.

Mario and Zelda weren't the only things that would have made people happy at E3.  ANY traditional first party Nintendo game would have, be it a new Pilotwings, Kid Icarus, Pikmin, or, god forbid, a brand new franchise.

Also, putting Wii fit in a bucket that is supposed to make those fans happy is ridiculous.  I think that game is significantly flawed for many many reasons.  Mario Kart however should make those people happy though.  It's always been a great traditional Nintendo game.

Interviewer fail. Nintendo doesn't make "hardcore" games, they make some core games which is defined as the old market, the part that the PS3 and 360 are fighting for and that the Gamecube was part of. New IPs will be most likely aimed at the new market since that doesn't have a lot of IPs yet.

Mario Kart isn't a core game?  News to me...

And I think the whole "Mario and Zelda" thing that is always brought up are merely examples...I mean, it was pretty clear at the NOA press conference just this past week that they knew that hardcore gamers would be excited for Sin & Punishment 2 and Punch-Out...They just couldn't say anything besides "Mario" and "Zelda" before because there was nothing else they could talk about even existing...

i agree with him.

I think we've been spoiled with the almost back to back releases of good 1st party games on wii so early in its life. All everyone ever talked about during the n64 and GC eras were drought after drought after drought. Then after an initial 'drought' during the start of wii's lifespan we get some awesome **** and somehow expect them to keep it up?

I think its stupid to ask where the next mario or zelda games are at this point. It even makes me angry when i read comments on other message boards with 'fans' that hate on nintendo for somehow not having these games ready even though the last installments haven't been out that long. After last weeks media summit and the ton of games shown there you'd think things would have changed but it hasn't. There are still people out there assuming theres a new mario or zelda game thats like 60% complete and nintendo refuses to show us or they still think "nintendo doesn't care about me any more because they want to cater to grandma's thru wiimusic"

It's all b/s to me man. The "core" nintendo fans would normally eat up a game like Animal Crossing this holiday season but now it has the "casual" stigma so no one wants to touch it in fear of being labeled a "non-gamer" or something retarded like that. They also choose to ignore Wiimusic just for being a game that Everyone can enjoy.. you know, like the games nintendo has always made. It too has this new stigma that is the 'casual' label that for whatever reasons brings out the worst in fanboys.

Back when "casual" was simply "non-game" there was never this emo attitude among fans thinking that Nintendo somehow abandoned them. Whatever. If you're gonna pass up on Animal Crossing this holiday, fine pick up a 3rd party title (there'll be a few of them that will actually be good on wii..). If you are picking it up, stop your bitchin cuz that game will hold you over until the next big game becauze its damn addictive and you know it.

Interviewer fail.

Indeed.  He should of followed up with the question, "Could you guys at least fix Brawl online then since its all they have?"

Mario Kart isn't a core game?  News to me...

Back when details of the game were released, many core gamers griped, and the fan base defended the changes stating that Mario Kart had always been a "casual experience".

At the end of the day, its a slower, easier, more intuitive version of Double Dash with roughly the same graphics.

No they didn't...And no it's not slower...Wait, no, I'm not going to even ****ing bother when these definitions of what makes a "core" or "casual" game change every freaking day...

Wait, why the hell are you even talking about visuals in a core/casual game differentiation?  I...don't...understand...this...
