Title: Would you Rebuy NES games if they were HD ?
Post by: AV on October 02, 2008, 12:20:13 AM
I think HD is possible on Wii its a pain to do, It might be possible to do it via Virtual console games or WiiWare if the developer really tries. I think original xbox could do 720 and some pS2 games so in theory Wii could too.
My idea is this:
Super Mario Brothers: HD
Option to play in 720 i Entire game graphics are retextured to super high resolution. Bricks are bump mapped coins look shiny etc.
The music is by the Smash Brothers People so its all orchestrated fully and has 6.1 Surround Sound with Online leader boards for complete times and some multiplayer modes tossed in.
Its fundamentally the same game just in a shiny pretty new package. No new levels, just some basic new modes like that multiplayer mario brothers game from GBA.
So would you do rebuy this game? $10

Isn't 720i the same thing as 480p?
Regardless, the issue is that the Wii can not, can not, can not, cannot, can't output anything above 480p. It's not built to out put anything with a higher resolution. It can't do it. It can't do it. It can't do it.
Regardless, you're probably basing this off of that Street Fighter II HD Remix. Know that that's a remake. The engine of the game has been reworked, the attacks have been altered, and the enter game is being built from the ground up. Remake of that proportion is possible, just not in the kind of high definition you reference here. It's entirely possible, and up to developers to make if they want to, and publishers to fund if they think it'll sell.
Additionally, I think you're mistaken on what the Xbox and PS2 could output, but I'm not sure and right now, I don't care enough to look it up. I could very well be wrong, though.

Why even bother making it? Most people don't care much about HD. They just released a little game called Mega Man 9 with NES graphics and it is selling well. They can sell HD Mario to the 5 people who want to buy it in addition to the original because all it will do is cannibalize the sales of regular Mario as people decide which to buy.

I prefer the old pixelated graphics, to be honest. Maybe I'm just nostalgic or something, but I really love those block coins and characters and everything about the way those old games looked. Also, I'm afraid that if some things were updated to more modern graphics, then things would change and not be what we thought they were. For example, I like to think Little Mac's coach is none other than Carl Winslow from Family Matters. You upgrade him to HD then he might suddenly look like someone completely different, and I don't want that.

I believe that the best the Xbox and PS2 could do was 480p, and then they could upscale that to 720p if necessary.
I would buy a NEW Super Mario Bros. game in HD, sure. But it would have to retain the look and feel of the original, like Bionic Commando: Rearmed. In other words, it would still have to look cartoony, but a better quality of cartoony (like New Super Mario Bros., only taken to another level). In the right hands, a high-def 2D Mario platformer would be absolutely amazing.

Hell no. Sprites give a feeling of solidness to me, with 3d graphics in 2d or (ugh) rendered sprites it feels like everything is mushy to account for the more realistic, less purpose-made (i.e. less accounting for hitboxes) animations.
Some NES games might need improvements where there's a lack of clarity (invisible passages, anyone?) but I don't think that's a HD/non HD issue.

I see what you did there.... invisible poll thread anyways the answer will be hell no. I know a few people that were pissed about mega man 9 on 360 and PS3 because it was 4:3 on those two platforms as well. But anyways I think the whole HD thing is just silly, since you got to buy a fairly expensive TV, new cabling and such for better resolution and yes this is coming from a person who owns a 5 year old HDTV.
Graphics don't make or break a game (well with the sole exception of graphical glitches such as falling through the floor of a level).
P.S. Nintendo recently did this idea for Orbient they refined the GBA version of Orbital moved it to Wiiware with a 6 dollar price.

What Stevey said and RAB quoted..
I shouldn't even bother in this invisible poll...

this isn't a invisible poll. I just thought it might be cool fan service. Same game just re polished for 21st century. I just think it would be cool to see mario's fireballs be actual fire balls that animate and they will burn a gumba black than turns to ash. The would be cool. Same game, just things like that .
I think the orbital wiiware game is a nice example of what I'm thinking of.
Also something like Zelda: Four Swords Adventures how it has upgraded graphics for LTTP.

This topic yearns back to nemo_83's ideas of yore.

Yeah. The good thing about old 8 bit Mario was he was too pixelated for anyone to tell if he was a mature Ron Jeremy or a goofy looking cartoon character. From the 64-bit era on, Nintendo gave him big blue eyes and a pot belly and greatly softened his image from how he was in his early days, where you could only tell he had a cap and a big moustache, and that was about it. In other words, they kinda made him into young santa claus, rather than the buff professional wrestler they could have molded him into.
That's the problem with good graphics, because you aren't able to use your imagination.

It would be crazy fanservice but... I'm buying these games already, and I want the originals with their original nostalgia!
Plus, whats the point of turning such a basic game like Super mario Bros into an HD affair when all you're doing is running and jumping with the occasional fire balls and acid trips. Without adding any new tricks (like NSMB did) you're wasting all that HD 'glory' on nothing, but adding them will take away what made Super Mario Bros a classic peice of video game history!

you don't take AWAY the original game, it still exists. Just two different versions for you to enjoy either and possibly show off to friends.

But the HD version costing extra.
Besides, the NES games would need a total makeover to look good with improved graphics, many had a VERY limited tileset and that'll just show more with better graphics.
