Title: What is the best combination?
Post by: Stogi on September 26, 2008, 12:47:28 AM
I've been thinking of getting a new system. I've been leaning towards the PS3 (cuz I have a bunch of PS2 games), but like always, I'd like to know what you guys think first.

I can firmly say that what I play the most is 360, and the Wii. My PS3 is at the moment a bluray player. If you have the money to splurge, get both systems. I would suggest you hang out with some of your friends that have either system, and then maybe you might get a clearer answer for yourself as to which system you might want to buy.
My vote is for 360.

My brothers both have a PS3, and I must say, I love playing it.
What concerns me the most is online. I don't want to pay for it, but is Live soooo much better than PS3's online system?
Title: Re: What is the best combination?
Post by: Caliban on September 26, 2008, 01:13:56 AM
Honestly there's not much of a difference. It all depends on the developer's (I'm looking at you Konami and your MGS4) efforts towards their online structure. The 360 has a uniform online structure, but it doesn't necessarily make it better i.e. Team Fortress 2 *sigh*.
If you don't want to pay for online, and you like using the system, and your brothers also have a PS3 which is good so you can also play with/against them... I don't think you will feel bad about the purchase.

In the end it all boils down to which developers you like...
If you like Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and Konami, then PS3...If you like Bungie (though I guess they aren't MS-exclusive anymore) and a bunch of nice JRPGs (Namco, tri-Ace, etc...), then get a 360...
Online gaming is a bit of a non-issue for me... ='D

I will probably never own a PC again. I'm all about them laptops now a days.

I have both PS3 and 360, and really enjoy them both. I got the PS3 because I'm a technology whore, and I bought the PS3 to specifically play games with my buddies (Halo 3, Gears of War, NHL, Madden, etc.). If all of my buddies had PS3s, I wouldn't own a 360. At this point the PS3's online component does about 98% of what Xbox Live does, perhaps not as slickly, but functionality-wise they're nearly identical (especially with PS3 games coming out nowadays, which all have trophies, properly-integrated online features, etc.).

I bought all of the consoles and the pie chart of my gaming hours (besides pc) breaks down like this:
Xbox 360: 75% Wii: 24% PS3: 1%
Also, Live seems to me to have a much better feature set, like the completely integrated join/invite system, achievements (woot), friends list high scores, etc. They're redoing the interface for more speed and functionality sometime this fall (woot) and they're adding these Mii things (barf).

If I were to buy another console, I'd choose a 360. I'm not interested in Live, but it's the volume of games I'm interested in, along with the Arcade games, that are the reason I'd buy it. However, as it stands, I don't spend enough time playing my Wii games, in the sense of console ownership, so I've yet to need another console bad enough to pay $200 or more for it. Maybe when it gets around $150 or gets a smaller redesign, I'll reconsider.
My roommate badly wants to me to go ahead and get a 360, and I don't care. For some reason he wants one sooner for Final Fantasy XIII than when the game comes out, and he doesn't have enough money to get one. He hasn't influenced my decisions, because I really don't care about FF XIII, and since I'm the one buying, I'm waiting untill I want to buy it.

I'd get a PS3 over a 360. The 360 is just so damn unreliable I can't even fathom purchasing one. If they ever get around to upgrading to the new chipset (and if it makes any significant difference) I might change my tune.
80% of the games for those two systems are available on both, so you should look at the few exclusives they have and decide based on that.

I'm leaning toward the PS3 almost entirely because of Valkyria Chronicles, but I'm trying to force myself to clear some of my backlog before then. Also, what vudu said.

But Live is what makes me want to say 360. But GT HD makes me want PS3 :P

I'm not going to sit here and say that a PS3 is a better choice than a 360, as I don't own a 360 so I can't really compare.
What I can say is that I've been 100% happy with my PS3 purchase, but part of that is the backwards compatibility I get when playing PS2 games I've missed, which isn't a benefit of the system anymore so, yeah.
Title: Re: What is the best combination?

I voted 360. I prefer the controller. I don't like the PS's because I can never get a comfortable grip. But I did suffer through it enough to finish Call of Duty 4 and Uncharted, so it isn't that bad :\.
The Xbox Live market is so much better than the PSN. Downloads from the PSN take forever, Live has more choices, and everything just feels that much more polished.

I'm buying a 360 next week and I chose it over the PS3 because the few 360 eclusives I want (Mass Effect) are more important to me than the few PS3 exclusives I want (LittleBigPlanet) and the 360 controller doesn't suck anywhere near as much as the PS3 one does. Also I plan to go as insane with Live Arcade as I do with the VC and WiiWare.

I know Live Arcade is a great service, but I'm amazed to see how many people think it's so much better than PSN. I still play Everyday Shooter, Eden, and Monsters a TON. I absolutely love all three of those games, and I'm looking forward to things like Flower coming later.

Mass Effect is much better on the PC. You get improved controls, added features, and a lot of fixed bugs. ;)

Yeah Pale, everybody seems to think that PSN is totally ass. There are some incredible games on there. I also love Everyday Shooter and PixelJunk Eden, and WipEout HD is amazing. Echochrome and Super Stardust HD are genius as well. Not to mention the best downloadable version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (no size restrictions = no compressed audio). You can also get stuff like Bionic Commando, 1942, Mega Man 9, Commando 3, etc. Good stuff, and since they revamped the layout it's a lot easier to navigate.
You can't go wrong with the 360 though.

With the recent price drop, great recent XBLA games: Castle Crashers and Braid, it's hard not to vote for the 360. However if you do own a PC and you want your console purchase to last, I'd recommend the PS3.

I do think he makes a good argument for PSN. I mean ya it's not as robust as Live. But the games on PSN sound better than the ones on XBLA. But thats just what I got from his words. I am actually interested in all the PSN games he listed.

I should have clarified that my computer can't run Mass Effect and while I have the money for a new console I don't have it for a new computer, at least not the kind I'd want.
What makes Live Arcade better than PSN in my eyes is the fact that I'd rather have classic arcade games (Arcade-perfect Galaga and Ms. Pac Man especially) than classic PlayStation games (and the one classic PlayStation game that I really want is available on Live Arcade). Also, I forgot to mention, even though it's limited, the backwards compatibility with the original Xbox, a console that I never owned, is nice.

It really comes down to which system has the exclusives that appeal to you the most. I went with a 360 because it had Earth Defense Force and Flatout Ultimate Carnage (and it was $400 cheaper than a PS3 at the time).
I can't comment on the online stuff, because the only time I hooked it up online was to laugh at the sheer size of the demos.

Yeah but you also get the horrid DRM scheme. Personally I think there are some really unique PSN games that stand out more than XBLA games a big XBLA games disappointed me in a way the super glitchy Castle Crashers. But really you should assess which games you want and then go from there.

Well, all my brothers now have a PS3. If I want to play with them online (the whole point), I'd have to get a PS3 so this thread was pretty useless (sorry).
I just found out I can use the PS3 as a media server, so that's a plus. I also happen to like the PS3 controller (it's a little light though). One thing that erks me though is the lack of games I want. Just poppin over at metacritic confirmed that the only games I would buy immediately would be GTA4, a couple of shooters (probably COD4 and RainbowSix), and maybe a racing game. Oh and StrangleHold; cuz even though that game is repetitive, it is WAY too funny. I was literally in tears after playing for 3 hours straight.
I'd probably check out a couple PSN games, but I'd most likely just spend that money getting more classic games on the Wii.
EDIT: I guess there's God of War (I FUCKING LOVE THESE GAMES) and Fallout to look forward too.

You don't think that consoles in and of themselves are horrid DRM schemes and have been since their original inception? Besides, the first thing I do with any PC game I purchase is crack it. If nothing else, I don't like having to needlessly put discs in just to verify my copy. Of course nowadays cracks serve the higher purpose of keeping my system free of junk like SecuROM. I just wish Steam games were easily to get to run as stand alone entities.

I never mentioned anything akin to piracy. I crack the games that I have purchased and thus legally own. As I have spent the money on said games, I see no reason to be hindered or inconvenienced by the worthless precautions put in place by the developer. They don't work anyway, as actual piracy certainly proves. It's certainly not my fault that a few world governments would rather pander to corporations than back up their citizens' fair use rights.

I don't care about HD either. All I care about is if the game looks good for the hardware it's running on. All the rest is just numbers.
Title: Re: What is the best combination?
Post by: D_Average on September 30, 2008, 11:45:40 AM
I just bought a PS3 after debating the two and ultimately I looked at it like this.
1) I need to rationalize the purchase with my wife and the PS3 comes with a Blu Ray player.
2) Most of my friends don't play games online, so I'm going to be playing random strangers on either system.
3) Most of the 360 exclusives are FPS's which make me sea sick.
4) Little Big Planet and of all the wierd PSN exclusives.
5) Price. Though the arcade recently dropped to 200, for my current needs it was still more expensive after purchasing what the PS3 80 gig already comes with at $399. See below for the math:
360 Arcade - 200 Online Subscription - 50 WiFi Adapter - 100 Hard Drive - 100 (This is a rough estimation as the 20g is $70 and the 120g is $140) HD DVD - 50 (outdated yes, but it is the only current option for true HD movies)
Grand Total = $500
Note - Neither system comes w/ an HDMI cable but they can be purchased online for $3.
6) Longevity. Given the fact that the 360 did come out a year earlier and the PS3 is just now gaining momentum, I have a feeling we'll continue to see many new releases which push the hardware over the next few years or so. MS on the other hand, may release a new console in late 09/early 10.
PS - If you want to buy new and save 100 bux, here's an offer I used that worked great. I ordered the system on Tues and had it by Fri w/ their normal shipping. http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644489278

Nice, KDR. Make sure you post your PS3 tag in the proper thread and I'll add you in.
Also, don't forget that you can always upgrade that 80GB hard drive to a drive of any size you want. You aren't handcuffed by what Microsoft offers.

Title: Re: What is the best combination?

With games like Burnout now available for download, yes!
But it's cheaper to buy Burnout Paradise on disc than get the download version. Plus you don't completely waste hard drive space!
They're actually both 30, unless of course you get the used copy from Gamestop for 25. Personally, I already had the hard disc so I didn't download, but had I not, I would have. Burnout is one of those games with long legs that would be great to have on the hard drive for quick plays.
Title: Re: What is the best combination?

The point of having a large HD is so that you have hard drive space to waste. In other words, you don't have to constantly think, "Do I have room for this game on my HD?"
With the fall 360 update you'll be able to copy games directly to disc and play them off the hard drive (which is brilliant). With that in mind, 120GB isn't as big as it used to be. Sony will probably allow this on the PS3 at some point, which means I'll be copying over select games (I'm looking at you, Metal Gear Solid 4 and your intolerable in-between-level installs).

That feature is making me interested in upgrading to 120GB HD from my measly 20GB HD. I'm worried though I have heard some people have had issues with transferring data.

well it's good to hear you didn't have any problems, maybe my friend's problem was an isolated incident or maybe even not related to the memory transfer. He claimed he lost some save data to Halo 3. That was the only thing he mentioned so if that is the case I'm not gonna worry about it.

Don't forget you still need the disc in the tray, so the feature is pointless. I wonder how stuff like Infinite Undiscovery, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey will be dealt with since they are all multi-disc games.
Title: Re: What is the best combination?
Post by: NWR_Lindy on October 04, 2008, 01:52:57 PM
It's not pointless because you'll have considerably lessened load times, and you won't have to stream data off the DVD disk.
The Halo 3 save data issue was actually a bug with Halo 3, not a problem with the transferring of data itself. There was (is?) a bug in the save data creation that prevented it from being able to be loaded from anything but the hard drive it was originally created on. Meaning that if you transferred your save data onto a Memory Unit and took it to your buddies' house, or transferred it to a different hard drive (e.g. moved it from the 20GB to the 120GB drive), you could no longer resume your saved Campaign game. I'm not sure if they ever fixed this. When it happened to me I wasn't very deep into the Campaign, so I just deleted my data and started over.
