Remember the fear that the Trinity test of the first atomic bomb in 1945 might ignite the atmosphere? The Large Hadron Collider, a massive particle accelerator 17 miles in circumference that will begin operation Wednesday, comes with its own apocalyptic possibility: teensy black holes with gravitational appetites voracious enough to swallow the Earth.

That quote is great because it includes a historical example that shows just how serious the threat is. Still, if I were in charge of the project I'd have scheduled it to start sometime in December of 2012 just to screw with people.

I'm fairly certain they disproved the "doomsday claims" using scientific modelling done in the 1930s.
They talk about it at length here: http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/06/20/1158097.aspx

Is "fairly certain" enough when it comes to the end of existence? Bloody scientists. Nobody cares how the world started. I better be playing Wii Sports Resort next year.

There is a serious lack of originality in posts in this thread.
Go if you want to I never tried to stop you Know there's a reason For all of this you're feeling Low it's not my call You couldn't ever love me more You couldn't love me more You couldn't love
Me I don't show much It's not that hard to hide you See in a moment i can't remember how to Be all you wanted I couldn't ever love you more I couldn't love you more I couldn't love
You want me to cry and play my part I want you to sigh and fall apart We want this like everyone else
Stay if you want to I'll always wait to hear you Say there's a last kiss For all the times you run this Way it's not my fault You couldn't ever love me more Couldn't love me more Couldn't love
You want me to lie not break your heart I want you to fly not stop and start We want us like everything else
Maybe we didn't understand Not just a boy and a girl It's just the end of the end of the world
Me I don't say much It's far too hard to make you See in a moment I still forget just how to Be all you wanted I couldn't ever love you more I couldn't love you more

Bump.
I just read up on it and this sounds so damn interesting that even if there is a chance of ending the world, it will be worth the risk. I'm especially interested in how this might rip a hole in space/time. This could truly be the small step towards time travel and teleportation.

I completely agree!
I'm getting giddy with anticipation. Even if this makes the theoretical science behind particle physics fall flat on it's face, it'll at least throw us in the right track.

What's most interesting is being able to prove that wormholes exist. When the particles eventually collide at higher and higher energies, and after looking through the data, if we find that some of the subatomic particles have gone missing without a trace, it could prove that they "slipped" through spacetime as we know it. If we prove there are holes in spacetime, that is literally the first step towards time-travel.
What's even more fascinating is that future civilizations could literally pinpoint the time where we broke through spacetime for the first time in human history, and come pay us a visit.

I remember Stephen Hawking saying in an interview how he wanted the LHC to not work. He seemed eager to want to get back to work on figuring out something else. I liked how the article here put nothing in both the best and worst things that could happen. Oddly profound, when you think about it.

True. On one hand particle science as we know it will literally crumple at the foundation and make us go back and rethink everything; on the other hand LHC will be a business debacle basically stall and maybe even discontinue truly expensive science.
But there are already things in place that the LHC has formed that will survive no matter what the outcome. For instance, the scientific network of computers from all over the globe, connected and interactive, has allowed scientists to communicate better than ever before.
This network shouldn't be taken lightly. It has never existed so well.

This isn't the first particle collider ever built. Its just the largest and most powerful one currently. Here's a list of others (past and present). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_accelerators_in_particle_physics)
As for destroying what is known about particle physics, I highly doubt the current body of knowledge will be thrown out as a result of anything that goes on. They've already been doing this sort of experimentation in the past (and found elements like quarks), so they know a lot about particles smaller than your average atom.
If anything, it will add more clarity and breadth to the body of knowledge about particle physics, because researchers have speculated about the building blocks of atoms over the last 50 years (everything after the A-bomb basically), but the technology hasn't been feasible until recently.

I'm fascinated about how it can transmit the volume of data they're talking about (terabytes? petabytes?) around the world in a timely manner for researchers, and whether they're sharing what they find through the network (it would be awesome to teleconference and work with others in real-time to manipulate and report on the data) or through more conventional means.

i love some of the more random lines that wouldnt be funny without context. The one that sticks out the most to me is Bender chanting "go, go man, go!" to cheer fry on as he pours cereal/milk on his head, chops up some bananas and eats it.
