I'm interested, but i'm going to wait since it's a retail game here. The good thing about that is, it will hopefully drop in price or I can pick it up second hand.

That sounded worse than I meant it, it was supposed to signify that I'm extremely interested in this game and I will buy it despite the fact that my Wii is completely full several times over. Getting rid of my ego wouldn't help, it's more than 40 MB and therefore isn't allowed in the Wii's internal memory in the first place.

I'd definitely wait, I mean the game costs 40€ here. That's a bit much for a game that was designed to cost maybe $10.

I constantly get this game and De Blob confused, even though they are totally different concepts.

I have to say I'm happy to be reminded that they are in fact different and this one is coming soon.  It's nice to get more WiiWare titles of the caliber of the stuff I'm playing from PSN.

I haven't seen a price yet for the WiiWare version.  It's going to be $19.99 on Steam, so a betting man would guess 2,000 Wii Points.

HOLY HELL THIS GAME IS GOOD

It's a bit like Lemmings, in that the point is to get from point A to point B as efficiently as possible.  The physics generally works like you'd expect, but there have been a couple times where my structure couldn't support itself even though I was sure it would hold.  Everything's kind of "floaty", meaning your structure won't crumble very fast.  You'll see it wobble for a few seconds, giving you ample time to add a support or two.  Even then, I find myself not being able to react quick enough to save my tower or bridge.  Thankfully, there are many do-overs that let you go back one more (so far I'd say each level has between 5 and 10 of them).

This is a wonderful game.  The art style is charming, the concept is unique, and it's generally fun to play.

Title: Re: World of Goo
Post by: vudu on October 15, 2008, 03:59:50 PM
;D

I really like how each level has two benchmarks.  You need to save a certain minimum of goo balls in order to clear the stage.  In addition, each level has a second--generally much higher--target.  If you save an insanely large number of goo balls you'll be certified OCD.  :)

I got stuck on a level in world 2 last night that took me 25 minutes to beat.  In the end, I prevailed (take that!!) and beat it with an OCD ranking.

All the "extra" goo balls you save from each level get sent to a centralized stage where the goal is simply to build the highest tower possible.  The game pulls towers from other players (not sure if there's any rhyme or reason to this) so you can compare the height of your tower to that of everyone else's.  So far I have about 80 goo balls in my tower and it's 15 meters high.

Here's something that makes me sad - world of goo has a piracy rate of 90%.

Quote from: kotaku.com
We received a tip pointing to the comments section of a recent RockPaperShotgun post, in which World of Goo designer Ron Carmel mentioned the game had a staggering 90% piracy rate. We contacted Carmel directly, who confirmed the figure was "about right."

Carmel informs us that he's seen torrent sites with "500 seeders and 300 leechers" and has received emails from people who initially stole the game but ended up buying the full product; unsurprisingly, they make up a "very small percentage." He concludes, "We're doing ok, though. We're getting good sales through WiiWare, Steam, and our website. Not going bankrupt just yet!"

Although Carmel takes it in stride, this is probably a good time for us to reiterate that the charming and fun World of Goo was developed by 2D Boy, which consists of Carmel and his design partner, Kyle Gabler. We want more goo, so please support the 2D boys properly.

Boo, pirates.

crawls out from under rock

How has this game been under my radar for so long? I think the title threw me off, or something. Been watching some video, and will be picking this up when I get home today! Art style is awesome, and gameplay looks super fun, too. Yay!
Title: Re: World of Goo
Post by: vudu on November 13, 2008, 05:50:32 PM
I blame the $20 PC price-point for a healthy chunk of that.  When the WiiWare version is only $15 PC-users feel ripped off and opt instead to "stick it to the man".  ("The man" in this case being two starving programmers working out of a coffee shop.)

I wouldn't be surprised if the PC version of Bionic Commando Rearmed suffered a similar fate.
Title: Re: World of Goo
Post by: KDR_11k on November 14, 2008, 08:20:47 AM
Meh, Star Craft had a 90% rate too. It just happens, when it's free to warez people warez anything they see, some even turn it into a gotta-catch-em-all sport and don't care about the actual things they grab.

Whoa, guys, whoa. WHOA... I got this and proceeded to play it for like six hours straight. SO FUN! I love the personality and its total bizarro-weirdness. Tim Burton seems to be a big influence in the art style, and that is a most excellent thing.

Is there a sequel in the works, or what?
Title: Re: World of Goo

No, the creators have said they did what they wanted to do with the game and they're moving onto other projects.
Title: Re: World of Goo
Post by: decoyman on November 18, 2008, 03:10:46 PM
But... I wanted more goo...

You know what, this is fine. NO, it's more than fine – it's great. I'm all for creative designers using their talents to power original projects.

Instead of getting more goo, I'll just watch other people do the goo. I did that just this weekend, and it was surprisingly fun, seeing the different tactics others come up with to solve the puzzles. I had my techniques that I'd used, but decided to just shut up about them and let the person figure things out on their own. It's a different kind of fun, but fun nonetheless.

my girlfriend gave me 2000 wiipoints card and I bought World of Goo out of the hype.

WOW I really enjoy it. I didn't think it would be fun to build stuff, but boy I am enjoying this game hardcore. I played it in front of my mom and she actually thought it was a cool idea.

This game is so worth the hype it is getting. I actually would of liked a easier way to move the camera but still that is a minor problem.

Support WiiWare. They need to get the message supporting Wii is worth while. PC is $5 more too.

I think they get some more stuff, but still i much rather play that game in the sofa with a wiimote than a mouse in the office.

I hate the placement mechanic, I end up woth a long, node-less connection very often when I wanted to place a node with two connections somewhere, it's fatal in the tower of goo level because those long connections fail completely when the tower bends to the side.

On the levels you can click on the birds and it will undo your last action.

I found on that level you have to keep the weight equal on both sides. Also you need a stable foundation.
Title: Re: World of Goo
Post by: KDR_11k on December 23, 2008, 04:09:34 AM
Yeah but I usually have already placed a few more blobs after the one that started the failure and I'd prefer if I didn't have to spend my limited undos on things that happen purely because of control detection errors (which also cannot be worked around later since a long vertical connection prevents the placing of a horizontal connection).
Title: Re: World of Goo
Post by: BeautifulShy on December 23, 2008, 04:31:31 AM
KDR the way I beat the level is to have a good foundation and I would build up and out.You just got to make sure that both sides are equal in balance while you work up.

Now i've had the game for awhile now, downloaded on the raving recommendations flying around here, and the second the title screen came up with that Tim Burton inspired Danny Elfman-like music.. i knew i was in for something special. I was not dissapointed at all.

I played the game with my girlfriend a few times and she loves it, in fact she's gotten further in it than i have (i gifted her the game and she has some more time to play it than i do). I let a friend play it once when he was over, while i stepped out to take care of something, and when i came back he looked like a zombie, as if his soul had been sucked into one of those damn pips along with the goo balls! He loved it too and wished he had a wii just to download it (at the time i wasn't aware it was available for PC). The funny thing is though, as i watched him play i realized how our personalities show in the game. I'm a little more reckless and impatient than he is, but he's the opposite. Trying to build a bridge across a gap, i saw him take his time make a super sturdy foundation... only to make it across to the pipe and not have enough goo balls left. I show him how i did it and he laughed at my wobbly bridge, but shut him up when i made it across with goo balls to spare.

Oh and the music.. phenomanal. In fact.. I downloaded the sountrack recently and I was hoping maybe someone could help me find any sort of official track listing. Some of the file names could be titles, but others are simple, unappealing things like "bigcomputer_1" and "notld_anthem_excerpt1"

I really gotta go back to it. I think I got stuck in one of the levels and didn't bother to finish it...

Blasphemy, I know...

It's ok i hit a few of those in chapter 3, i thought they were impossible but i got some sleep after playing for hours and being up late. When you go back to it with a clean slate so to speak, things become easier to figure out. One of the worst was at the end of chapter 2...

i actually had to use a youtube video to figure this out, and although it was probably the most unorthodox way of completing the level, it helped. It's the one called Red Carpet or something. You start off on some giant block that you have to weigh down to release a wall holding back a giant goo ball that will roll down and (with the right structure built) roll and bounce to the far right where it'll get broken up into tiny red goo balls that you must feed to the pipe. The youtube video i saw bypassed weighing the block down all together but in such a way i didn't think was possible. Made me look at the levels in a whole new way. It helped alot later on too..

The only weird part of that was thawt fixed gooballs weight more than loose ones though I guess I should have known.

Thanks vudu!!!!

I did just finish downloading a second torrent last night, and unzipped the files today and am currently listening to the tracks. Some of them are still short excerpts like the last torrent I downloaded, so I'll still check out the link you provided to see which is better and as Mr. Jack said, it's going straight to my ipod!

Is it wrong to say I prefer this soundtrack to Mario Galaxy's ;)

Its not only wrong is sick and wrong!.

Then again I haven't finish the game so I haven't heard all the tracks, but so far is fantastic, not Galaxy fantastic though :P

I will get the soundtrack but later, I get soundtracks only after I finish a game otherwise they are like spoilers (yes I'm one of those who cannot stand anything remotely spoilerish, even for games without story).

I'm like that too, but even though i haven't finished the game I'm close to it. I did check out some of the songs on this soundtrack and when I heard one I didn't recognize i stopped immidiately.

Also, I don't really think this sound track is better than Mario Galaxy's, but because its shorter I can really take in the music better, and it stays in memory longer. Right now the only two songs i can really remmeber off the MG soundtrack are Hell Prominence (big lava planet thing) and the one from the story book.

At first I thought you meant RTL because they were the ones 2D Boy got the contract with when they ran out of money. RTL is a major TV network though so them going bankrupt would be a bit... weird.

Note that it's their US publisher, the European one they indebted themselves to because they needed funding is still alive.

World of Goo soundtrack arranged for solo piano performance (http://gonintendo.com/?p=80035)

It's pretty darn good.  However, I prefer the original mix.

There's also an MP3 available for download if you visit the YouTube page.

Wow, thanks for that.  I just beat World of Goo over the weekend (one of many Wii-Ware titles I can now play whenever I want to due to the SD card fix!)  And I downloaded the soundtrack into my iPod, so this piano thing was timely and cool for me.

I loved the game all to pieces.. even if some of the OCD challenges are patently impossible... I won't stop trying.
