I am looking to this as well I really like that you can paint the town in various colors. I am surprised there is a lack of interest on this forum.

I'm hugely interested, ever since I played it at Nintendo Australias tour thingy, it's a really good game, it totally reeks of effort. Real fun in multiplayer too. I'm going to pre-order it (free figurine!) and buy it day 1, been a while since i've done that with a game. It comes out the same day as Wario Land here, what a huge day.

I also like that De blob is fighting for colors to be everywhere instead of black and white and grey.

I think de Blob and Wario Land Shake It are going to be my next two Wii games as I don't see anything else worthwhile coming out between now and then.

Well, you could read my impressions from the Nintendo Media Summit... here (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressionsArt.cfm?artid=15777). I loved the controls, the controller really just seemed to melt away for me.
Something that's VASTLY overlooked when talking about this game is the multiplayer modes. The "Blob on the run" mode is some super intense form of cat and mouse.

I was just thinking about the story. I was thinking that it was lots to do about real life and working for the man. What I mean is it rebels against monotony and being tied down. If you think about it with games. The parallels are there as well.
Title: Re: De Blob
Post by: Kairon on September 06, 2008, 06:08:54 PM
One of the things I like about the game's color thematic is that the music starts out non-existent in the monochrome world, but as you add color it starts adding instruments and melodies, almost some sort of jazz synthesis as you add creativity back into the equation. It's really a wonderful artistic touch.

That worlds first review in the aussie mag is supposed to be out in a couple of days, i'll have a read through it at the shops when I see it. I've never heard of the magazine before so I don't know how credible they are. It makes sense that an Australian publication has played it first though, since it was developed here.

Wow what a FLOP score! After all this talk of 10s it's not even as good as most Xbox 1 games wow total bomb. Nintendo Power gave it 8.0 very harsh. Here's the 10 review http://www.gameplayer.com.au/gp_documents/080919deBlob.aspx?Page=1 it's written by a girl so only girly manchildren will like the game confirmed.

Though honestly I think de Blob will have more hardcore than "casual" appeal.

I think it has both, marketed correctly it could sell some big numbers, and if it really is this good it'll have good word of mouth too. A good name and multiplayer helps.

This is spot on. In alot of ways the game reminds me of a 3D Mario game, if only in structure. The basic premise of the game is to get to the end of the level. Pretty much you can do this by just completing the challenges presented along your path, or just coloring everything in sight, but this will only beat a portion of the level. Like 3D Mario games, players who want that extra challenge can tackle all of the other goals within the level and get up to about an hour and half of play time out of each individual mission.
Oh yeah, and the multiplayer is chaotic and fun with 4 people, but the framerate suffers. The single player boasts 60 FPS, while the multiplayer dips down to probably 20 or 30.

Awesome, came out today here, got it with the free figurine (which rocks!). Loving it so far, spent 30 minutes in the first level, the game is deeper than I thought it'd be! Controls are perfect, had no problems, very smooth, graphics are fantastic and even the music is really good so far. I actually feel like going back to the first level again just to "complete" everything, heaps of fun.

Haha that was my first day too. I think I got in eight, couldn't put it down. Yeah I kind of had to play for that long to get the review done, but when I eventually did put it down for the night I really didn't want to. Next day at work I was literally antsy waiting to get home and play more.

I got this today and i'm really liking it. I'm not too fond of the controls too much, they feel a little "floaty" and the jump is frustrating (needs to be mapped to a button!), but it looks gorgeous and the FMV looks incredible.

The long levels is really my only complaint. I've been forced to "settle" for silver medals just because I want to finish the stage ASAP and need to do something else. Thankfully, the levels are fun to replay so I don't really mind.

I love this game. I got it last week I think, and once I start playing it I cannot stop. I've heard complaints and read one here about the jump, I like how the incorporate the functions of the remote in to the game; that's what the function of it is anyway, isn't it? [I just love seeing Wii games that actually utilize the abilities of the system.] One of the best things as far as structure goes is how you can go through it pretty fast -- the medals awarded for beating a time are usually around 20 minutes, but that seems to do the game a terrible injustice. Other than that, my favorite part is just the fact that it's so uncontrollably beautiful.
Title: Re: De Blob
Post by: matt oz on November 01, 2008, 11:52:16 AM
I rented this a few weeks ago, got about halfway through the game. I thought it was good, but a few things kept me from finishing it.
First thing was level length. Some of the levels in the game are pretty large, and there is no way to save inside of a level. It's either all or nothing. Maybe it was a technical limitation, or maybe it was inexperience on the part of the design team, but there's really no excuse for that. This is not a 'pick up and play' game. You need to budget 45 minutes to 1 hour for each level of the game.
The controls were the second thing. Well, just the jumping controls. Since this game is on the Wii, you have basic controls being implemented arbitrarily through various motions. Fantastic. I just love having to shake something when I could much more easily press a button to accomplish the same thing. Contrary to the above poster, I feel that this game doesn't utilize the Wii's abilities at all—it's just another example of a developer using waggle for its own sake.
Third was the camera, but this is a 3D platformer, so I was willing to forgive most of the camera problems.
I really wanted to like this game. The presentation was fantastic. The movies before each level were extremely well done and were actually funny. The concept for the game was great too, though the levels became a bit repetitive. There were just some gameplay design choices that kept me from loving it and ultimately finishing it.
Title: Re: De Blob
Post by: Spinnzilla on November 01, 2008, 03:27:28 PM
You had a problem with the camera? I've rarely had to adjust the camera.
I think the game is probably the most well done 3rd party game on the wii yet. I fall in love with game easily that have great art direction.
Now I await mushroom men.
Title: Re: De Blob
Post by: KDR_11k on November 01, 2008, 03:54:14 PM
It took me a while to figure out that you have to point at the panels to continue through the comics before the levels so I only saw one or two panels of most and thought they just ended there.
Title: Re: De Blob
Post by: Mario on November 04, 2008, 02:41:18 AM
I'm also a fan of the jumping. Sure you could press a button but it's simply more fun this way. Shaking to capture buildings is heaps fun too.
Title: Re: De Blob
Post by: TofuFury on November 08, 2008, 11:36:01 PM
I decided to rent this game tonight. It was a tough choice between Wario, Boom Blox, Samba de, and this game. I went with this one because I'll probably pick up Wario and Boom Blox for Christmas, but wasn't sure about this one. I'll start playing once I get offline.
On a side note, I don't think I'll be renting games for a long time. I didn't realize it costs almost $10 to rent a game from Blockbuster. It's a bummer, since I really want to try Wii Music without having to buy it.
*Edited in a few hours later...*
This game has exceeded most of my expectations. It's just so much fun to play. There are a few frustrations here and there, such as camera and the jumping being a bit frustrating. But while playing it, I keep flashing back to Jet Set Radio, and that's a good thing. The gameplay, music, and total package is solid. Overall, it's worth a purchase, and I think Nick's review of the game is spot on.

I played monster lab at PAX and it was pretty awesome too.
Title: Re: De Blob
Post by: TofuFury on November 09, 2008, 03:31:50 PM
I suppose I can't complain too much about the camera. Sometimes it's just a little hard to see where some places need to get colored in. I know there's the hidden stuff in the nooks and crannies, but it takes a moment to see if there's stuff to color in on the tops of buildings.
Some jumps are a pain. My hand was beginning to hurt from violently shaking the wiimote when Blob wouldn't jump like I wanted him to. Similar to when you jam on the jump button when your character isn't jumping right.
That said, I played for a few hours last night, and I'm loving it. Thanks again, Maxi for suggesting this to me. It's really giving me a feeling of playing Jet Set Radio (or any other awesome quirky game), and it's great. If third parties keep making games of this quality on the wii, it's going to be a great ride.

I finally beat the game. One word sums up the last part of the game ; ANNOYING. I'm never replaying the last few stages ever again. Everything seems to go downhill from about midpoint, the environments are duller, music not as good, and not many new ideas to keep it flowing. All devs need to play Soul Bubbles and just copy it.

Yeah, I read somewhere that THQ was happy with how it sold, and to expect more de Blob. I hope they listen to the complaints about the first one, and fix them. Other than that, I can't wait for the next one.
250k is a good....start. I hope that this game exhibits legs and gets more sales, both here and worldwide.
Umm Kai De Blob came out in September so I would guesstimate that De Blob did 500k or more in the US.

250 K seems a bit low for a game that was released in September. Even if they are estimates they do put the game at at least 350 K or more, if you count worldwide sales.

Well, yeah, 250k is US-only.

Drudging up this old topic, but I finally got to play this game. I gave it to my brother for Christmas. I really like the multiplayer portion of the game. If you have some good players it can get really competitive. Too bad its only split screen though.

I really need to pick this one back up, it's a great game. I can't remember why I stopped playing it, I might've gotten another game I wanted to try or something. I've not tried out the multiplayer mode though.

I stopped playing it when one level took about an hour and a half to beat, but I had to quit before I could finish it. Then gaming ADD struck and I moved to something else. I'm going to finish it, though. I really love the whole experience. If anyone hasn't picked this up already, it's down to $20 now. It's well worth the money to pick it up. I'm hoping THQ makes a sequel for this.

A sequel would be great, but I have severe doubts. How well did this game sell anyway? Though I guess the real question, at least for the publisher, is if the game turned a profit. I'm sure there are ways the game could be improved, so I hope it happens. But I'm certainly not expecting anything.

Last I heard, THQ had shipped somewhere around 700k copies worldwide. But that was ages ago.

A also hear that THQ was pleased with the sales of the game.
This reminds me I need to finish it as well.
I've only played the multi with two people, I could see 4-player being a blast, though.

Sequel to de Blob confirmed by THQ for 'fiscal 2011'.

Nice to have confirmation it is going to come at some point.

Yay a sequel! I love love love this game and return to it every few months. I think the music has much to do with my love. I listen to the soundtrack constantly. Its great pop-funk. Its also made me a big fan of The Bamboos. I hope they get The Bamboos to do the sequel's music (and they give them proper credit this time!)
EDIT - I'm listening to the soundtrack RIGHT NOW!!!

I just started it and I have to agree. The music sets the perfect mood for the game.

So glad this sequel is confirmed, now all we need is confirmation that Blue Tongue will be handling this again.

I'm actually kind of surprised to hear there is a sequel in the works, I wasn't sure if the game sold well enough for that. One thing I hope they add to the sequel is mid-level save points! Either that, or make the levels smaller, similar to the bonus levels in the first game.
This reminds me, I still need to finish this game. And I agree that the music is excellent, it's infectiously catchy.

I agree with Johnny, at first it was cool, then it was like a chore.

Even a mid-point save state would be nice so I could freeze my progress to come back to at a later date.
The game sold over 700k if I recall, Mop it up.

One thing I'd like to see in the sequel is creative use of Wii controls. This game uses a flick of the Wiimote to jump, which is pretty pointless, though I'm not sure if a game like this can really use motions. It'd be neat if you could use the pointer to draw on buildings, and maybe earn points based on how complex the picture is, or something.

If flicking the Remote at different velocities actually mean throwing blob around with different speeds and varying physics, it might work.
