Hey look, two core games and one non-game.

I would hardly call "Captain Rainbow" a hardcore game. I wouldn't call it a game at all but something dreamed up when somebody ate the blue mushroom......

Well it's too bad nobody asked you what you thought a "hardcore game" was or else you might have contributed to the thread and not derailed it into more Definition Warz. Thanks a lot.

I'm sure a game that is focused around a someone helping a bunch of obscure Nintendo characters can be classified as a casual game...

Here's my thoughts on Captain Rainbow. (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=25559.25)
I was going post them here but I really felt they belonged in the games thread. Valkyrie Profile may be cool.

Captain Rainbow is almost certainly not going to be released here so it's existence is rather meaningless to us. So pointing at that and saying "there's a core game, stop complaining" is kind of silly. It's kind of like Nintendo pointing at Animal Crossing as if one game that's sort of an enhanced port of a DS game that's a port of a Gamecube game that's a port of an N64 game in the first place makes it all okay.
How does Captain Rainbow even play? It's hard to get excited about something from just a weird trailer.

Who the hell's "us?" Speak for yourself. And Skip's last two games were localized, so I imagine it'd be a pretty good chance of this coming over.

No, the meeting is 2/3's core and 1/3 Wii Music, which totally flies in the face of the narrative that Nintendo is becoming more non-gamer than before.
And Animal Crossing was a core game on the GC. And then suddenly it's not one. And like you said, the game didn't change, so therefore we must conclude that certain people did. And such a malleable label is useless.

Pointing at a casual game and saying that Nintendo is abandoning the hardcore is even WORSE...

I bet Captain Rainbow is the brother of Captain N from the old cartoon show!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_N
Or maybe its really Captain N himself... or something. It makes sense, because Captain Rainbow's real name is Nick, and Nick starts with an N, so there you have it: Captain N(ick) has grown up and evolved into Captain Rainbow!

Sure. it's the future. You are on a martian colony and you get word of something horrible happening to earth. The earth is destroyed by a sudden super solar flare and the mars colony is the only place where humans exist. Mars colony is set up to survive on its own, but every once in a while get new supplies from earth. Now your alone. The game plays in a style mix of harvest moon, and space station silicon valley where you have to make things work the best they could.

And then everything begins to fall apart, because a group of rogue Martian scientists have been working on a super top secret wormhole device. Unfortunately, said device accidentally opens up a gateway to Hell and cyborg demons begin to invade our universe! Luckily, one lone space marine stands in the way... You are this marine, armed only with a chainsaw (for clear cutting on Mars!) and a BFG.

Which is a damn shame, because this looks to cater greatly to the Nintendo fanbase, more so that Brawl even.
Looking at the trailers, it looks like Skips aims to revive these characters people once loved or respected and even re-invent them.
One of the greatest things about Chibi-Robo was the interaction of characters. Helping them out and learning their stories made for some complex and engaging storytelling. Captain Rainbow looks to follow the same concept as Chibi, but with Nintendo characters. It would just enhance Nintendo fandom even further.
Seeing the Little Mac trailer sold me on the idea. It makes sense that he is fat in the game. What happens to a world champion when he retires or can't get a gig? They get fat. Nintendo has been neglecting him for years (save for the trophy in Brawl), so its only logical that he is portrayed as a fat guy in need of training.
People are right in that both Chibi Robo games were localized, but the first game came at the end of the GC's life and the DS sequel was a Wal-mart only game. Nintendo clearly knows that Skips' games are for a niche crowd, and can't bother to fully release them.
With Captain Rainbow drenched in so much fruitiness, obscure Nintendo references and Japanese humor that automatically makes it a no-no in the US.
Which is, once again, a sad thing because this looks to be something special that does better service to Nintendo history than real Nintendo games.

You know when I bought the game, I sure did have a hard time finding a Wal-Mart in the United States, boy I'll tell ya. And by the way, they even have this "internet" thing and Wal-Mart has a "website." I only heard a rumor on GameFaqs, but I hear you can order this game "online." It's an abstract concept, I know.
(Isn't it amazing how people want to do so many things in internet games yet the second it has to be utilized for something mundane like buying stuff, it's like it may not even exist?)

Was the sarcasm really necessary to get your point across?
(Considering that this is the internet and a Nintendo fanboy forum, I say yes).
I understand that Wal-marts are in abundance in the US and that you can buy the game online, but it was still a limited release game when compared to Nintendo's other games, especially Chibi Robo.

I don't think I ever said it wasn't a core game. It's just, you know, one I bought years ago and don't need to buy again. Perhaps I should argue instead that Nintendo is giving us a glorified port and saying "here you go, core gamers!"
This "two thirds of these are core games" stuff is iffy anyway because it's across two different systems. There are only two Wii games and that would be split one/one. You can't really lump the two together because someone very likely will only own one of them. When planning out their release schedule Nintendo logically should consider them seperate. I imagine they do since it's not uncommon for major portable and console first party games to be released around the same time. Anyway a show of only two Wii games is not as good of a sample as the E3 presentation which covered a lot more ground.
Plus just look at Captain Rainbow. It's a B-title. So is Animal Crossing. So is Warioland Shake. Pretty much every year Nintendo has some big A-title around Christmas. Last year they had Super Mario Galaxy. What the hell do they have this year? It looks like Wii Music is their big Christmas title. So core gamers don't get one or what?

(Just for those playing at home, Ian just said the only real attempt at a 2-D title this generation is a B-title, possibly without even playing it. this is why 2-D is dying on consoles, gentlemen)
If people can point at a few non-games at E3 and totally declare Nintendo be a non-gamer company, isn't that the same logic as pointing at a few core games and saying ZOMG NINTENDO IS TEH CORE? Also Nintendo is releasing Fatal Frame IV in just a week over there. CORE GAME ZOMG HOW POSSIBLE?

Funny how Ian regularly expresses fondness for 2-D games, while here he immediately passes judgement by setting a ceiling for Wario Waggle's potential.

Christmas is exactly 5 months away. A lot of things can be announced before then. If you've been a Nintendo fan for as long as I'm guessing you have, you should know they are constantly working on games and they don't usually announce them until maybe a month or two before they are released, so there's still plenty of time for them to reveal some major surprises.

The games are there for those who want to play them. What's a B-title? Is Wario Land not good enough? Well, Christ, what is for some people? Wario won't sell consoles, but I don't think Nintendo needs system sellers. They'll do just fine releasing good, fun titles.
Also, I don't know if you've played No More Heroes, but if you didn't, then you need to shut the hell up. You want a hardcore game? There it is.... sitting on store shelves, not selling as much as a game that great should. It's niche, but it's a core game. It boggles my mind how many people have passed that game up and still think they have the right to complain about what's on the Wii.

Have you even been paying attention to Wario Land Shake? When it was first shown, it looked a lot like Wario Land 4 which was a good sign, and then the video's came out that showed the game would contain a lot of great platforming elements. And now according to people who've just imported it, they say it IS a top notch platformer and easily comparable to the older titles. Plus they say that each level contains different missions and that some of the missions can be quite challenging.
So from all the impressions so far, Wario Land Shake is a traditional, core gaming A list title.
Also, I don't know if you've played No More Heroes, but if you didn't, then you need to shut the hell up. You want a hardcore game? Now that I can agree with. No More Heroes is the very definition of a hardcore traditional game that's also very good. Plus it can be found at stores for only $30 now, so anyone that owns a Wii and calls themselves a hardcore gamer has no excuse not to own it.

Ian would probably classify that game as "casual" because it features minigames where you collect coconuts and mow lawns.

So what makes a game a big A-title? Big sales? Because Animal Crossing will outsell everything. High quality? Because Wario Land looks AMAZING. Neither of those? Does it need Mario or Link? Gosh Ian, they can't just flood the market with the same Mario franchise. I know you'd love Mario Basketball or a Tingle FPS to surprise us out of nowhere this holiday, but it's not happening.
