Title: Could the Nunchuku functionality have been merged into the Wiimote?
Post by: Chozo Ghost on July 09, 2008, 11:07:27 PM
As I was playing on my Wii awhile back I was wondering if there was really a need to make the Nunchuk thing as a separate component, because couldn't Nintendo have just added an analog stick and another two buttons onto the Wii-mote and accomplished the exact same thing?
I think it would be possible to swing a remote and move an analog stick on that independently, just so long as it was positioned in a convenient spot. The only thing you would miss out on with this is the limited motion input that the Nunchuk provides, but the way I see it for something like a boxing game or whatever else you'd need two things, you should have just been able to link two Wiimoted together, and that would also be great for a drumming game or something too.

That is a interesting idea, but I think that it wouldn't feel as good as using Nunchuk& Wiimote. Where would you put the analog stick? Would you replace the dpad with it? How about c and z?Where would the missiles go? In a game like Metroid Prime 3 I think that the controls would be messed up.

You do realize that there is a accelerometer in the nunchuk right.

This would wreck my favorite control scheme in Heatseeker so I am opposed to this idea.

I personally thinkt he form factor of the wii remote may have to change to accomodate an analog stick... sometimes I imagine what it would be like to control a game with two nunchuks that had good sensors in them and pointer capability.

I like the Wii Remote and nunchuck combo though I'd rather have an analog stick where the D-Pad is on the Wii Remote. I hate the Wii Remote D-Pad. It's too stiff and uncomfortable (double entendre).

Remote held horizontally wouldn't work as well for its intended purpose with an analog instead of a D-pad.

Like what? To play NES VC games? Solution: buy a classic controller.
I wouldn't mind so much if the D-pad didn't suck so bad. Over 20 years of D-Pad evolution and that was the best Nintendo could some up with. Lame-o.

I've always wanted Nintendo or someone to invent an analog d-pad that any game could switch between digital and analog depending on what it needed. Is this an impossible thing?

I'm curious if the analog nub, as seen in the PSP, might be somehow applicable for this use?

Let's hope not seeing as the analog nub is terrible.

Didn't the Master System or some other system have Dpads that you could screw little joysticks into? Why not something like that but with 21st century technology?

LOL that doesn't work. The joystick would still only register 8 ways then.

I know that, what I mean is do something like that plus analog hardware that's locked in place until you flip a switch to change to analog mode. Or they could make a D-pad cap you can snap on top of an analog stick and push down the analog stick and lock it in place. Or have a disk with one side being a D-Pad and the other being an analog stick that you could flip over depending on which one you want to use.

1. Boxing. 2. Analog sticks are huge, not just the visible part, there's a large deal of stuff inside too. 3. The force needed to operate an analog stick is quite large, needs good ergonomics to remain in your hand. 4. It's just not comfortable to operate controls on the same thing you swing around and it's better to keep the analog available while using the 'mote than to keep the dpad. 5. Analog sticks protude out from the controller, the dpad is flat. When you grab the wiimote you could end up with the stick poking your hand. 6. Weight. You'd want to keep the weight somewhat balanced between both hands.

KDR is right the dpad is just 4 button contacts and on the surface you see something that resembles a +. A analog stick has a whole shaft assembly in it, the best way to see it is with a regular six axis or a controller with a transparent plastic body.

The Classic Controller really isn't that much thicker than a Wii Remote and the analog sticks don't have to stick out that far. I find that I have to readjust my hand to firmly press the D-Pad. Sure, I'd probably have to do the same thing with an analog stick, but if you gave me a choice between D-pad and analog stick, I'd pick the latter.
