Title: Chrono Trigger Headed to Nintendo DS
Post by: Crimm on July 02, 2008, 02:58:25 AM
The most recent issue of Jump Magazine and a Square Enix countdown page confirm the long-rumored project.

SquareEnix launched a new website today in Japan that confirms news from the most recent issue of Jump Magazine: the SNES classic Chrono Trigger is being ported to the DS.  The new site features a clock similar to the iconic RPG's logo as well as the ticking sound heard in the introduction sequence of the SNES game.

The game is scheduled for a Winter 2008 Japanese release.  It is unclear if this will be a straight port of the 1995 release, the 1999 PlayStation re-release, or if the title will be given a graphical overhaul much like Square Enix has done for classic Final Fantasy games on the DS.

I'm just fine with a Chrono Trigger port, though I'd expect some new content ala the Final Fantasy Advance titles. However, I really hope this doesn't have the 3D graphic style from the new DS FFs. That's great for RPGs that really weren't that interesting graphically, but Chrono Trigger's art is still gorgeous and couldn't be captured in that engine as it stands. Luckily, I don't think that's the case, as Matrix Software has been busy doing FF IV. Would love to see them do either VI or VII next though.

I was utterly disappointed when Chrono Trigger Resurrection was canceled (which actually did translate the art into 3D well), but it seems like Square Enix had a reason. Huzzah.

Sometimes I get so upset at Square Enix that I swear I won't ever buy anything with their name on it and then they come along with some thing I love and then I just hope they don't wreck it.
I agree with Smakian though, I think it will be a straight port with some new stuff added to it. I love Chrono Trigger a lot. My friend lent me the cartridge and I played it until he forced me to give it back.
Want!

This is good to hear. Hopefully they'll give it an accurate translation this time.

I had this on PS. I'm not interested in buying yet another overpriced Square remake. Hurry up with Fire Emblem DS, would you Nintendo?

I never played through the original, so I'm very much looking forward to this.

Will this game appeal to someone who isn't an RPG fan?

Hard to say.  I'm not the biggest RPG fan, but this is by far one of my favorite games.  However, if you can't stand other sixteen-bit RPGS (FF IV, FF VI, DQ IV, etc.) this probably won't do much to change your mind.  It's not that it's really different from those other games, it's just that it's better in every way.  But if it's the fundamental gameplay that you don't like, ... well, then you just suck.

Isn't this the sign of the Apocalypse?

Chrono Trigger is FINALLY being ported, and Too Human is almost out.

That leaves none other than DUKE NUKEM TO MAKE HIS RETURN.

Shouldn't there be a fourth horseman to usher in this Apocalypse?
Could the potential of a new Kid Icarus game be the fourth horseman?

So it's just a port/remake?

F**k you Square Enix.

Prey was already released so I say we count that as it was in development hell as long as DNF.

Touche.
Damn, the (video game) world is really going to end soon. You might say...the world ends with you.

I haven't played much SNES but I thought I always heard people say that Chrono Cross was the better one?  How many are in the series?

There's two (technically three if you the text adventure game, Radical Dreamers) and Chrono Trigger is widely hailed as one of the greatest RPGs EVAR while Chrono Cross is kind of a red-headed stepchild because its not a direct sequel and has a different battle system and about 800 million different characters (A wide exageration, I think there were 40something though). Although I thought Chrono Cross was quite good but its still not on par with the original.

Coming from someone who loathes the FF games (even the SNES ones), I enjoyed the SNES version greatly - but this was years ago. I hope they put more effort into it than a straight port, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

PS: I remember the ending being awesome, Kashogi. Couldn't tell you details though, because they escape me.

There were good things about Chrono Cross, but whenever an RPG has a large cast of recruitable (and largely disposable) characters, you tend to lose something in the character development department.  Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, is remembered for it's characters and story.  As I mentioned, I haven't played CT all the way through; the version I had was the horribly emulated one on the Final Fantasy Chronicles.  I'm looking forward to the chance to pop it in on my DS.

Some CT fans were upset because, in Cross, some of the characters from Trigger made cameos as apparations of themselves as children, perhaps implying that they may have come to a bad end.  Also, to some, Chrono Cross itself had an ambiguous, and, perhaps, unsatisfying ending.

There is one thing I will say about Cross; the music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27-DsLJ76aA) was phenomenal.  I no longer have the game, since I lost interest and sold it a few years ago, but I still have the OST.
