Title: ?(^Spoilers^)
Post by: The King of red Lions on April 03, 2003, 02:56:11 PM
This is one of my minor complaints about the music. It actually makes sailing less enjoyable because you have to listen to a rearranged, out of order, and very... very drawn out take on the original overworld theme. The anger engulfes me when I leave an island and the beat starts. They should have kept the "normal" overworld theme. It would have made the game as a whole a lot better.
Of Course, this flaw is made up for by the outstanding use of music from past Zelda games in what seems like every situation.
Am I the only one that noticed the "midnight of the last day" music from MM in the warp from the first 2 temples after beating the boss? When you do the Ballad of Gales, do you notice the same notes as the OoT warp songs? When Tetra transforms into Zelda, can you hear the beat from Lttp. But of course, the Reincarnated song that takes the cake is the score from Hyrule Castle, which is carried on from game one, all the way to Wind Waker.
Any comments on what seems like the best soundtrack for any game ever made?(at least I think so).

I did notice "midnight of the last day" from MM for every "beam me up, Scotty" warp platform in every hole Link drops in, including fairy fountains.
The Ballad of Gales sounds only familiar to parts of Requiem of Light (whatever it's called, the Temple of Time warp song). Otherwise I can't find its similarities to the other warp songs.
When Tetra becomes the new Zelda, do you mean the Zelda's Lullabye/theme? I almost got teary-eyed when I heard that.
Which moment in Hyrule Castle are you talking about? I'm still in the process of getting Triumph Sporks, and I don't remember the theme from the earlier treks in the sealed castle.
I really adore the music from the moment you meet with the Zora/Earth Sage.
I'm also glad I just ordered the Jap. Zelda:WW 2-disc soundtrack last night for $46 including tax and shipping. God, that's like another game right there.
Rock on with the game music!

*sigh*
I can hardly believe someone is badmouthing the overworld music just because it isn't the exact same as the original overworld music. It is basically a different piece altogether. It only vaguely resembles the original near the beginning. The chord structure is different, and especially the style and feel of it is different. I don't know about you, but I think the sailing music from Wind Waker perfectly fits the setting.
It's not like they completely removed it from the game. That tune is still in the story intro, it also shows up right before you go back down to Hyrule. I think with the new sea setting for the overworld, a new theme was in order. Why don't you try expanding the original overworld theme, and giving it more of an ocean feel? It would take some work to do. I'm imagining that in my head right now.. the same style as the current theme, only except the chords changed to the original progression, the original tune, with the long rests in between phrases.. It would sound nice, I suppose, but the new theme really works better, in my opinion. Also, if it was the original theme, Kondo would have a harder time blending all the various themes together for the ending credits. I think that was an excellent touch.
In the Ballad of Gales, the cadence is the same as the end from Minuet of Forest.

Personally, I LOVE the remixed version of the overworld theme. Check out the Wind Waker trailer on the bonus disc, or the one at the very beginning of Wind Waker if you let the title screen sit for a while... (after it loops through once, it plays a trailer thingy) Those trailers are the best way to hear the new mix of it IMO, and it's breathtaking. I remember the first time I heard the new mix, I almost wept in joy.
I don't expect things to remain the same each game. I DO expect that proper tribute is paid to the old games though, and it's done this remarkably well.

Meanwhile on a different topic, someone else is complaining that Wind Waker used too much of the same songs, and should have used more new songs.
People are never satisfied. They always find trivial bs to complain about.
Anyway, I don't think the old overworld theme was all that great. Certainly not enough to get angry about it. CHILL. It's just music.

Havn't any of you noticed that in OoT, all the warp songs ended the same?

Just music?
Anyway, I like the overworld theme myself... I like just about all the music, cept some of it is too minimalist, and with midi that's hard to pull off.

I love the WW overworld theme because it's a totally new piece of music and yet it sounds so "Zelda-ish" because it uses some of the note arrangements of both the overworld theme in the original games and Oot. (And it just sounds like "sailing"!) I mean, Oot's theme did the same thing; it took some stuff from previous Zelda music and mixed it together into what I thought-- and still think-- is the best piece of music from a video game in all of history! :-)
But let's not start arguing about it too much...

I don't know if you guys noticed, but Outset Island's theme eventually goes into a version of the Kokiri Forest theme from OoT. Also, where you get the Master Sword has a darker remix of the Hyrule Castle theme from LttP, and there's a point in the game where they start playing the original Zelda title theme (that's the title screen music to LoZ, not the overworld theme). They don't go all the way, though. In Majora's Mask, the bas player for the Zora band was playnig the Underworld theme from LoZ when you met him in the Great Bay.

it should be noted that with CD's they can make much sharper sounds, and thus it should only be expected to see some change.

No. They do not all end the same. Most of them end with a harp arpeggio, but what leads up to that arpeggio varies. The Requiem of Spirit doesn't do the arpeggio at all. The Minuet of Forest is the one that ends in the same way as the Ballad of Gales, except for the difference of tonality; Ballad of Gales (if I remember correctly) is in C and ends in C, whereas the Minuet of Forest is in D and ends in E.

Hah... there are three remixes of Kokiri forest in Wind Waker. One on Outset, one on the outside of Forest Haven, and one on the inside of Forest Haven.
