Title: GameCube Service Disc - Everything you never knew!
Post by: UncleBob on May 11, 2008, 12:18:58 AM
Did you know that the Game Cube can detect the difference between a standard controller and a WaveBird?  Did you know Memory cards could have been made in units of 123 and 507 (i.e.: 1MB and 4MB)?

That's fascinating... especially the speculation that revision one hit in 1998!

It’s impossible to tell exactly when Nintendo experimented with this idea and how far they got with it, but it is definitely an interesting look at what research Nintendo was conducting with depth perception. Especially after the failure of the Virtual Boy. Because of the inclusion of Quake images, this idea might have originated at some point during N64 era. Since no further information can be gathered, it is hard to understand exactly what was being accomplished. Maybe it has something to do with the unknown EXI devices? Who knows!

that was the most interesting part in my eyes. those stereoscopic images were interesting on my eyes too!

UncleBob: I assume the service disc won't work in the Wii, right?
"the" Donny K: It won't work now.
"the" Donny K: However.
"the" Donny K: On the intial firmware it worked perfectly :)
UncleBob: Interesting.
"the" Donny K: and it reported the CPU speed as that of the GC's, because it is run in the emulation layer

This is interesting, but I can't say I really understand a lot of it.

So the GC was in development as early as 1998? That's very interesting to know... That was only 2 years after the release of the N64. Did Nintendo see the N64 as a failure? Would that be why the GC was put into development so early?

It also makes you wonder what Nintendo has in the pirpeline right now, hardware wise. They typically don't announce new hardware until just a few months before release, so for all we know they could have a VR headset being prepared for the Wii... that would be interesting.

No, companies usually start development on the next console as soon as possible. When they choose to release their next console would be more of a gauge on how successful they felt it was.

this is true.  i remember reading an article by some one at sony and they were talking about the successor to the ps2 a few weeks after it came out.  not that it was in any more than a speculative stage.  usually hardware is finalized a few months before a system comes out.  so the first few years of development are more of a "what do you want out of your system" kind of development not a lets give it 20 megs of ram kind of development.

i cant remember what magazine i read that in but i do remember getting asked at least 10 times a day "when does the ps3 come out.  man that sucked.
