Title: Vudu: Bound to enjoy Earth Bound (?)
Post by: EasyCure on May 08, 2008, 05:40:24 PM
At 9:45 this morning, a small package was sent to a certain forum member living in IL. That member will be receiving an SNES game hailed as a cult classic by the most cult-like fanboys of all. Along with the treasure that is Earth Bound are a few prizes, for what you might ask? Well I have no freakin' clue!

To think that at this very moment my precious game is sitting in some truck waiting to be delivered. Will it get lost among the other parcels? Will the handlers obey the "Fragile" message on the package? Will dogs think I'm mailing a bomb and cause government interception???

All very valid questions, but there is one more important question to ask...

Will Vudu like it!?!??!?!

That my friends is why I've started this thread. Via the power of the internets we can track, LIVE! (almost), not only the progress of my package but the progress of the beloved Vudu as he PSI Flashes his way through hordes of Happy-Happyiest, Struttin' Shrooms, Crooked Cops, and New Age Retro Hippies.
We can get updates on how far he's gotten, how many time's he's had his head handed to him, how many time's he's stuck and how leveled up he is when he delivers the final smackdown... as long as he tells us.

Share your thoughts and wait in anticipation to when the game arrives in his hands and we get his impressions as someone who has NEVER before played the wonder that is EARTH BOUND!

We're counting on you, Jimmy boy!

This is a lot of pressure.  Lucky for me, I'm just planning on selling the thing on eBay the moment it arrives.

(Edit: Oh what the hell, NWR didn't tell me that someone had already posted!  And it was vudu!  And it made my post look silly!  Damn you vudu!)

To prepare for my new treasure, I hooked up my SNES tonight, popped in Chrono Trigger, and kicked Lavos' ass.

Nice to know I still have it.  ;)

UPDATE!!!

Ever since the day after I shipped EB out to Vudu i've been dying to play the game and I'm sad I can't. I've been playing as Ness in Brawl, listening to the soundtrack, etc etc.

:( I miss my EB

Yeah.  What was up with all the Anti-Flag stickers?

I also got a rad Ninja Gaiden Stylus (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=22397.0) and a non-functioning copy of EarthBound.  (Hopefully some rubbing alcohol will fix that last one!)

lol i was cleaning out a dresser drawer full of crap and i had a ton of those (and no idea how i got them) so i sent you a few. I thought i had some awesome zelda pins/lapels that i "bought" a few of, and even though i did have zelda themed pins none of them were the same and i couldnt decide which one to part with... not that i use them anyway. As i said they were just sitting in a dresser drawer.

I was gonna send some stuff to UB after he sent some of us those eye patches, but i never got around to it. Be glad you're the one who got some of the crap i wanted to get rid of!
Title: EasyCure doesn't take care of this things
Post by: vudu on May 13, 2008, 10:05:32 PM
A little rubbing alcohol fixes everything!  Man, those connectors were dirty.

I just started the game.  Here's a running list of things I noted while playing.

1.   I love sixteen bit graphics.
2.   There doesn't seem to be a run button.
3.   I found a broken bat!
4.   I wonder what would have happened if I had left the house without talking to my mom.  Could I have played the game in my PJs?
5.   The L button seems to be a context sensitive Talk To/Check button.  That'll come in handy.
6.   Stupid cord.  I miss my Wavebird.
7.   I found a Bread Roll sitting in a wrapped package in the middle of the forest.  I bet this will be tasty.
8.   Items seem to be stored in presents.  Guess there's little point in checking every single background object hoping to find a hidden item.
9.   I really with there was a run button.
10. There's no pause button.
11. I told the police officer I'm friends with Pokey.  His brother seemed to know me, so I guess we're chums.
12. Now I told him we're not friends.  Guess it doesn't really matter what I choose.
13. I assume this is the same Pokey who's a boss in SSE.  Spoiler alert.  No wait ... that's Porky.  Oh well.
14. Took me a few minutes to figure out I need to go home because I can't get past the road block
15. Back in my PJs!  I guess maybe I could have played the first part in my jam-jams.
16. Why am I the only one in my family who knows how to answer the door?
17. Ah!  So that's how I save.  I was beginning to wonder about that.

That seems like a good place to stop for now.  I'll pick up some more tomorrow.

Post by: vudu on May 13, 2008, 10:13:04 PM
Okay, I lied.  I started to play some more.  I just had to see what was outside!

My first battle was against the stray dog.  I felt a bit bad about hitting a dog with a baseball bat.  I also beat up a spiteful crow.  But he left me a cookie when I was through, so I guess it's okay.

What the heck does a magical butterfly do?  It made me relax, but I don't know what that means.

So far the battle system seems pretty much like a straight forward RPG.  I imagine it will get more interesting once I get some party members who actually fight instead of play dead and cry.  At least King is there to help me out.

Wow.  Who would have thought a Bee from the future would be a prophet?  Strange, indeed.

Note to self:  Visit the creepy guy by the Meteorite when I'm alone.

I just beat one of those things from Smoke39's avatar.  Also, I really like the battle music.

BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!  NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I feel bad.  Would he have lived if I didn't talk to the mom?  I'm going to tell myself it didn't matter.

lol awesome. i love these impressions!

glad you fixed my game by the way.

by the way, you can play the game using only your left hand

hit select to bring up one of the menus, then hit L to open up the more important menus. any time you hit select or start and bring up your menus, thats like.. pausing the game you know..

as for a run button.. i dont think thats really necissary for an RPG but oh wel.. you'll get something later thatll help you out (if you're willing to spend the money. its not too pricey though)

oh and magic butterflies replinish some PP.

Sounds like you're enjoying it. You've made me so happy!

Everything I own, seriously I am a major pack rat, I don't throw anything away ever.

But the most valuable thing that would be worth a temporary trade for a SNES game would have to be my Dreamcast, yeah that's it I can't live without my DC.

i wouldnt allow it on the fact that i wouldnt want to pay to ship the DC back to you. Oh and i wouldnt get any use out of it.

If you can think of something else, another game perhaps, I might think about it...

Well if I was serious I would offer you My ONLY copy of Children of the Atom hard cover which is still in it's box it came in, that book is really hard to come by and not very cheap. It was also a Christmas present and  ask anyone that knows me, I have a hard time letting go of just random stuff, but Presents I keep forever no matter what.

But Alas, I am putting my SNES on Ebay sometime this week, when I actually get around to finding all the stuff that goes with it, so a SNES game is not worth much to me at the moment. So I will wait for the inevitable VC release.

Then again, I would trade you my DC straight up no questions asked for just about any Wii or DS game right about now, I really need to buy a new game for either system cuz I haven't been able to do that in soooooooooooooo long. I managed to buy Lost Winds but that hurt me to do.

I would never sell it if that is what makes you worried. I don't like to get rid of anything. right now I am desperate for money though.

OK I have a Zelda Collectors Disc if my prized Children of the Atom isn't good enough.

But I would have to know before I sell my SNES. Or this could be a good excuse to talk me out of selling my SNES, what do you say?

dude, thats all i read lol.

i'd let you borrow EB but Vudu has to finish it first. I dont know how long that'll be since i never told him to rush th ru it (its such an amazing game you wou ldnt want to) so if you need to sell your SNES cuz you need money, do it (even though it breaks my heart to hear such a thing). You can always borrow Harvest Moon 64 though.

Name one Nintendo-published VC game that was rated by the ESRB more than a month ago and after the Wii's launch. Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Mega Man (2), TMNT 2 and Vectorman are third party games.

Donkey Kong Country 3, Kirby's Dream Land 3, PilotWings.

Donkey Kong Country 3 was released the week of Christmas. The other two both rated by the ESRB, as is Pro Wrestling, and since I don't believe that it was recent and I don't remember them being rated pre-launch, so I'll assume you're right. So there is precedent for waiting a long time, but I'm pretty sure many more games were released shortly after they were rated.

But this is Nintendo we're talking about, and they seem to either hate the Mother franchise or LOVE spitting in the faces of Mother fans.

Hey, even if it did come out next week on VC, Vudu could just send me back my game and download it himself if his play time with it was positive. Then once i got my copy back, i'd seal it plastic and download the VC release myself. :)

Thanks, Smoke39.  :)  As sarcastic as your answer was, it's actually helpful.

I wasn't sure if I could beat Frank at this stage in the game.  For all I knew he had 1,000 HP and it was a futile battle right now.
Title: Re: Vudu: Bound to enjoy Earth Bound (?)
Post by: vudu on May 16, 2008, 12:00:16 AM
I've decided I don't really like the battle system very much (at least at this point in the game).  It's nothing more than physical attack every turn unless your health is low and then you should heal before going back to attacking.  I really hope it gets more interesting when I learn some more abilities and get new teammates.

Also, it's infuriating that enemies get to attack me after I make my move but before my attack takes place.  It means I have to heal even when I have plenty of health because if the attack connects then I won't be able to heal in time before the enemy gets a second hit in to kill me.  I need to plan two moves ahead which is annoying.  (Especially when neither attack connects, which means I wasted a turn and some PP.)

Don't worry, it does. The move variety really helps make the battle system more interesting down the road.

Combat pretty much sucks in all non-action RPGs as far as I'm concerned. :/
Title: Re: Vudu: Bound to enjoy Earth Bound (?)
Post by: vudu on May 16, 2008, 01:36:43 PM
It's rarely great, but I wouldn't say it sucks.

The problem with EB right now is max PP is very small (~25) and I haven't found anything besides going home or spending the night in the local hotel for $35 that replenishes it.  (The butterflies are too sporadic to count on.)  This makes it so out of the 3 Psi powers I've learned thus far (Life-Up, Hypnosis and Rockin) all are being ignored except for one that replenishes life.

When I got to the cave past the locked shack I ran into a group of 4 slugs.  I could kill one in a single attack, but since they each got to attack me for each one I killed, it means I was injured 10 times during the fight.  The second time I ran into a group of four I thought to myself oh-ho!  I'll use my awesome new Rockin Alpha to wipe you suckers out.  I did, and it worked, but it blew through almost half of my Psi Energy (10 PP).  I would have been much better off killing them individually, then healing for a cost of 5 PP.

So basically you're whining about your level starting out low early in the game. :b
Title: Re: Vudu: Bound to enjoy Earth Bound (?)
Post by: vudu on May 16, 2008, 03:56:22 PM
No; I'm concerned that this will be a problem as the game continues.  As I grow in level, I'll get new powers that will take even more PP and I'll run into enemies that have more health, thus making the Psi attacks I have now useless.  I don't care if I have 25 PP or 2,500 PP, if a basic Psi attack consumes 40% of my PP, I'm never going to be able to use it.

lol Don't worry, everyone got their ass handed to them a few times at the start of this game. It really is tough cuz all those damn gang members are too fast so you'll get hit plenty before your damn turn. I think its actually good experience though cuz even when you have all your PSI abilities, some enemies are brutal so you'll have to play it smart. You can't go wasting all your PP on your strongest attacks cuz you'll need to heal or sheild. Also you cant always waste your PP on the strongest sheilds or healing, cuz you'll never get around to inflicting any damage!

Trust us though, it gets better. Beating your first real big boss is such an accomplishment... unless you level up fighting weaklings until you're nearly invincible to all lesser enemies. That makes you a jerk though

Yes thats the first Major boss (there's a few minibosses like Frank) and he's tough the first time. I think most players guides want you to be at like level 10 or something when facing him but i think thats too high. If you level up TOO much you'll screw your next partner over when it comes to Exp Pts. (if you're not careful anywho).

I remember getting leveled up like crazy and by the time i got to the 2nd Major boss, all the standard dungeon enemies would run away with me and my partner got no where near the Exp. they should have.

As for those colored screens Vudu, they do help in the beginning of the game if you're havnig trouble fighting. Get a jump on the enemy whenever you can, oh and make sure to check the nearest ATMs for your latest money report! use your allowance for stocking up on healing items (to save PP). Want to be cheap? Fight those Spiteful Crows back on the mountain; they usually drop Cookies.

Level 10?!?  I think I was at level 6.

I could be wrong, i think thats the "playing it safe' level. I'm sure you can beat him with waht you've got now. You can try to stock up on items outside, re-enter the cave, avoid as many enemies as you can and then give that boss your all

avoid as many enemies as you can

That's approximately 0.  :)  My inability to run and the lack of obstacles makes it impossible to avoid enemy encounters.  I'll beat him eventually, don't worry.  ;)

I remember getting leveled up like crazy and by the time i got to the 2nd Major boss, all the standard dungeon enemies would run away with me and my partner got no where near the Exp. they should have.

Pffff, that's why you chase those jerks down and give them the beat-down...So satisfying! :reggie:

My solution to hard bosses is usually level grinding. :b  I think it's partly because I tend to be way overly conservative with items.  Like in first person shooters I'll save my ammo for my best guns until I come across an ammo pickup that I don't have room for.  "Oh look I get to use the rocket launcher now! *blows someon up to make room then picks up the spare rocket* 8D"

Also, green-flash insta-winning in EB is awesome.  Because combat in RPGs sucks. ;b

Yeah, I'm in Twoson now.  Which brings me to my next question.  As I walk around, I hear a beep every 30 seconds or so.  I can't figure out why.  Any ideas?

If you were carrying an egg, it may have hatched and become a chick or chicken.  If it's a chick, you can use it to cure homesickness.  If it's a chicken, I don't think it does anything, but you can sell it for a pretty decent price.

(Edit to clarify: When you have one of those in your inventory, it makes a noise every once in a while.)

Wow, I was wondering where that chicken came from!  I completely forgot about the egg I bought.

But, no, I don't think that's it.  I send the Chicken off to my sister, and I'm still getting the beeping.

A broken machine, some invention I received from the Orange inventor, a telephone receiver I got from the Apple inventor, and some random weapons/equipment.

I think i've done that, The Chicken will beep no matter what so you might as wel get that back and sell it. I actually never knew the chick cured homesickness, i've only been home sick a handfull of times in the years i've been playing it lol. It's a good source of income especially if you load up on eggs for free in that one town... i dont wanna spoil it if you havent gotten there

wow. EB fans learn something new everyday!!!

It always felt like Ness would get homesick EVERY time i'd be in a major battle and it SUCKED that i'd miss a turn. After awhile i'd star calling mom before every save just to avoid it
Title: Re: Vudu: Bound to enjoy Earth Bound (?)

I actually never knew the chick cured homesickness

LIES.  I was homesick today and all the chick did was make me "happy".  I had to call my mom to get rid of the homesickness.  (Prior to getting homesick, I kept getting the message "Ness craves a steak", but I couldn't figure out how to get rid of that.)

I had to resort to outside help for the first time last night.  I was in twoson and I couldn't figure out how to proceed.  I couldn't get past the tunnel with the ghosts because I didn't have anything that played music and I had completely forgotten that the barricade blocking my way to Happy Happy Village was shaped like a pencil.

Also, I've decided I completely hate the battle system.  My reasons for this are thrice.

1)  I hate that enemies get to attack after I choose my attack but before it connects.  It makes it impossible to fight without being wasteful of PP and items.

2)  I hate that my attacks "miss" so frequently.  I understand the need for some randomness, but it shouldn't happen so damn often.  It's retarded.  Earlier today I was fighting a sprout that I can kill in two hits and it kept sprouting siblings.  I got to Sprout E before I finally killed them.

3)  Enemies that steal my PP suck balls.  Those goddamn sprouts I mentioned in my previous point stole all my PP over the course of the battle.

Alright, I'm confused.  I just got the Franklin Badge from Paulina, and after I left the cabin Pokey and some cultist ambushed me.  I don't remember Pokey ever turning "evil".  In fact, I don't remember seeing him at all after helping find his little brother at the beginning of the game.  Last I heard he was up in his room without any dessert.  Did I miss something, or is my memory just bad?

its something that was lost in translation. His little speech when you rescue her is supposed to have more emphasis on him becoming a powerful figure within the cult (and not just getting more powerful than the last time he saw you). Besides if you can't figure out he's evil when he's hanging out with freaking cultist who kidnap a girl, somethings wrong with you!

Oh and your complaint about enemies attacking before you relates to your speed. Once you get stronger you'll encounter some foes who are slower than you and your attacks will come out first so it balances out. Sure you'll still have some faster but the enemies get more diversed as you go on.

This.

Also, I've always liked RPGs that require you to think "one step ahead" in the course of a battle.

i've only played a small handfull of RPGs and (maybe sadly) MegaMan X: Command Mission was the only one that i really needed to think a few steps ahead. I didnt get it at first but i caught on and it was pretty fun. I think it just made it easier knowing what the order would be though since it was displayed for you at the bottom of the screen.. again, i'm not big on RPGs so i dont know if alot of them are like that or not.

I like Breath of Fire II for SNES, it has the auto battle feature good for when you are level grinding.

I don't remember much cuz it's been like 15 years since I played it but I think Phantasy Star IV was like that, or maybe I am thinking of a different game, was it Sega CD or Genesis? Damn now I wish I hadn't sold my Genesis/Sega CD recently.

On Pokey, if you talk to some of the people in Twoson and happy-happy village then they'll tell you that some fat kid and a guy with a mask nabbed Paula. The guy with the mask in happy-happy village and tells you a bit more about it.

On the level difference once you get Paula, I never had a problem with it. I just leveled her a little close to the cave mouth then once she's gained a few levels, and against the mole you can use PSI shield to help her out.

On some play-thru's i like to kill Ness off and battle using only Paula. If i'm feeling risky i'll try to take on the enemies in that cave to level up quicker, but usually i'll save myself the headache (and the money from stocking up on health items) and fight some of the weaker enemies in Onett and the area between Onett and Twoson

I thought about doing that, but figured what's the point?  There's no harm in Ness being at a high level, so I'm not going to hurt myself just so they have the same experience.  Also, I hate power leveling.

well whatever you do, don't let Paula die and then go and fight some regular enemies as just Ness... If you start leveling up more while she's "dead" you'll be screwed when you revive her for a boss or something and she dies immidiately cuz she's now MUCH more weaker than you. Any EB fan can tell you how much it sucks to have to constantly revive her in battles via items or PSI.

Life forced me to sideline gaming for the past couple of weeks, but now I'm back to Earth Bound!

I made it to Threed tonight.  Hints from Paulina tell me that I'm going to pick up a third party member in this town.  I'm greatly anticipating adding to my party in the hopes that it will make combat more enjoyable.  I'm still having a hard time keeping Paulina alive.  She's currently level 18 and only has HP of around 70.  She's weak, and since I have to constantly use Ness to keep the girl alive, it's dragging on fights longer than necessary.

Don't be stingy with Paula's psi, she can attack multiple units and do much more damage with psi than her regular attack.

After she joined my party we wandered around the caves to the right of the village for a good hour.  Right now she's at level 18 and Ness is at 25.  I'm not really sure if this is an appropriate level for this point in the game (as I said, I'm just entering Threed).  I haven't been avoiding any battles, but the only "grinding" I've done so far was the aforementioned hour in the caves.

Since all of my recent posts in this thread about been nit-pick bitching, I figure I better say some nice stuff about the game so I don't hurt EasyCure's feelings.  :)

Warning:  Threed spoilers within!

I was completely surprised when Ness and Paula were captured and I took control over Jeff.  I had no idea I would control any other character besides Ness during the course of the game, so it was a pleasant surprise.  Only problem now is I'm back to having a single party member, which make the fights slightly less interesting.

Right now I'm ::groan:: power-leveling right by Stonehenge by killing the cavemen repeatedly.  (At 600+ exp. per enemy, it's going pretty quickly.)  As I mentioned before, I really don't like power leveling, but I need to increase Jeff's level before I rescue Ness and Paula.  He was at level 13 when I got to Dr. Andronaut's lab (Ness is 26 and Paula is 18), so I figured that would hurt me down the line.  Jeff's up to level 19 right now; I'm probably going to level him up a couple more and then press on.

I'm toying with the idea of killing Ness after I get him and Paula back in my party and returning to the cavemen to bring them up to Ness' level.

I'm kind of worried about what the heck I'm going to do once I get Poo.
Title: Re: Vudu: Bound to enjoy Earth Bound (?)

don't worry about poo. After you get him he'll level up like crazy and catch up to the rest of your party in no time (might even surpass them depending on how you play)

TRAGEDY

My save file has been lost.  When I turned on my SNES today the file was gone.  The battery most likely died on the cartridge.  This makes me extremely sad.   :'( :( >:(

It seems like I'll just have to wait until the game comes to VC.  I had made it all the way to Fourside, and put probably 15 hours into the game, and I'm not exactly looking forward to repeating that again.

So I've decided there's no way in Hell I'm going back to play the first fifteen hours of Earthbound again once it comes out on VC.  Therefore, I need some kind soul to send me his or her game save for the VC version once they get to the point I was at when my save was lost.  I'm detailing this now, because when Earthbound finally makes it to the VC in 2010 I'll probably have forgotten these details.

SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY.

I'm in Fourside.  I beat the five moles at the dig site and obtained the diamond needed to pay-off the debt of the Runaway Five.  Paula was kidnapped at the department store.  I beat the alien on the top floor, but I have not gotten back Paula yet.

Other pieces of info:  My level for Ness was in the low thirties.  I had around $45K in my bank account.  I had all the best equipment available to me at that point, as well as a whole crap-ton of special gadgets for Jeff, none of which I find useful in the least.

I think there is still one lingering question:

DID YOU ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTED??
Title: Re: Vudu: Bound to enjoy Earth Bound (?)
Post by: vudu on June 29, 2008, 12:46:06 PM
Definitely.  The sense of humor was great throughout.  I really enjoyed wandering around the various locations and trying to figure out what to do next.  (I only had to resort to using an FAQ once.)  The only part I didn't enjoy was the battle system early on (and the part with just Jeff) because it didn't really get interesting until I had three people in my party.  (In fairness, this is pretty much the case for all RPGs, but Earthbound seemed to take much longer to get that third party member to join.)

That's why I want to keep playing, but I'm not excited about redoing the early part of the game.  I'd much rather pick up where I left off.
