Title: What if...Spielberg directed Return of the Jedi? (you can play too!)
Post by: Nile Boogie on May 07, 2008, 09:51:44 PM
...and Nile starts another thread on starwars but not really.

Anyway, I was watching Empire of Dreams, the StarWars documentary and they said the George Lucas wanted Spielberg to direct ROTJ but he couldn't due to something, who knows. Would it have been a better movie? Worst?  I don't know but it got me to thinking. What if I could make any director make any movie? Who would I choose to make what movie. The film  didn't have to be bad or a flop just a different take on things. I'll start with the one that jumped right in my head.

Attack of the Clones
Directed by Joss Whedon

I was thinking Micheal Bay but the action in AotC wasn't bad to me , it was the other stuff that needed to be tweaked.

Now it's your turn.

Star Trek: Nemesis directed by Nicholas Meyer.
Stuart Baird ruined what was a lot better of a script than the final movie turned out to be, so I'd give the job to the man who directed Wrath of Khan, universally considered the best of the 10 Trek films.

Every time Nicholas Meyer has touched Star Trek it has turned to gold.  I must say I was disappointed that Paramount didn't approach him to breath some new life into the franchise, and instead opted to go with flavor of the moment J.J. Abrams.

(Not a dig against J.J., I really liked both Mission Impossible III and Cloverfield, it just seems he is the "it" director/producer right now and I am bitter that Meyer hasn't returned to the franchise.  And no I don't watch Lost or Alias and never have.)

Not to derail this, but I think Star Trek is in good hands with J.J. I think he is much more than a flavor of the month director. Though I can definitely see why you'd want to stick with a proven director of the franchise.

No, the original Trilogy are perfect leave them alone. Attack of the clones is the only one that really needed some help but in the end it did what it was supposed to do, make us hate Anakin.

As a kid Return of the Jedi was always my favourite of the Star Wars films.  Even now as an adult it's probably my favourite to watch.  Hell it's just the most action packed.  Though if it came out when I was adult maybe the Ewoks would bother me.  Nostalgia might be why I tolerate them.  So while it would be interesting to see how Spielberg would have done it it isn't something I really wish happened.  Return of the Jedi is perfect the way it is (or "was" anyway).

As for other films, well I never felt they should have made a Terminator 3.  T2 really wrapped things up.  But anyway they did make it and I found it pretty damn entertaining, though I don't like what it added to the Terminator canon.  If I pretend it's fan fiction it works.  It would be cool to see what James Cameron would have done with a Terminator 3 if he chose to make one.  It feels weird when someone directs every film in a trilogy but one.

And on that note I would have liked to see George Miller direct Max Max Beyond Thunderdome.  When scouting locations for the film, Byron Kennedy, the producer of the first two Mad Max films was killed in a helicopter crash.  Since he had just lost a close friend, Miller lost interest in the project and agreed to only direct the action scenes.  Since I consider Thunderdome to be the weakest of the trilogy it would be nice to see how it would have turned out if Miller was fully into it.  It would have the added bonus of Kennedy not being killed.

A.I. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212720/) directed by Stanley Kubrick.

it'd be interesting to see AI directed by Kubrik since he is responsible for it, but Spielberg did direct it like a Kubrik movie. A lot of people didn't like that one, but I did.

This already happened.

RotJ directed by George Lucas: would have been exactly the same as the current RotJ. BTW, RotJ is terrible and Spielberg at his worst wouldn't have helped, but Spielberg at his best might've made it pretty cool.

Bullshit.

Well, Kubrick wanted Spielberg to direct and himself to produce; Kubrick's plot, themes, and designs were all used. The movie is pretty much exactly what Kubrick wanted. The fact that Kubrick wanted a sentimental Spielberg film is, I think, what pisses everyone off.

Leave the classic trilogy alone, the are perfection. Any complaints or nitpicks we have now are entirely the result of the failures/disappointments of the new trilogy which I still loved BTW, but not as much as the old ones.

I must be out of touch, I haven't seen any Kubrick movies other than the Shining, saw it when I was very little, scared the crap out of me wouldn't/couldn't watch it again. I might still try someday. I never seen A.I so I am not sure what all the fuss is about.

Spielberg is hit and miss, I like a lot of his newer stuff, but am the only person on earth who hated E.T. Weird part is as much as I hated the movie, I actually liked the video game. Yeah I know I ain't right.

When my parents took me to see E.T. at the theater, I was terrified of the horrible monster and they had to take me home.  I've never really cared for the movie since.

E.T. is the only movie that can make me cry on-cue EVERY SINGLE TIME I WATCH IT.

Bridge to Terrabithia pulls this off nicely.

I couldn't watch past the start when he's running through the bushes with his red thing glowing. I had nightmares. When I was little of course...
