Title: Korg DS-10
Post by: TheFleece on May 04, 2008, 02:42:17 AM
I've been watching this for months and I'm surprised no one's made any mention of it. AQ has developed a Korg-10 synthesizer for the DS and it's really cool and easily blows the other music or sound applications like Jam Sessions and Electroplankton away as a stand alone app.
It was announced to be released in Japan but was recently announced for a worldwide release. I'm pretty sure I will have to do a bit of hunting once an US version is out, but in the meantime I'm pretty interested about it because yes I jack my DS into amps and effect pedals and I make games and other things sound cool  8)

THAT...SAMPLE MUSIC...IS SO...HOT.

Any video though?

And... How could I output this into something I can actually save on my computer? Would that involve a little technomancy or something?

I was planning on running the DS through a digital 4 track so that I wouldn't have to put anything foreign into my system. I'm sure that people have hacked the DS so that you can save sound and whatever, but I'm not into it so much since I only have one.
There are lots of videos on YouTube- search for Korg DS-10

It's easy, double sided headphone cord into the mic input, record. BAM!

I love when the producer said.  "They are VERY drunk...at that time!"  Classic.

In all seriousness though, this is a remarkable application for the DS.  Anyone w/ just basic musical and software skills can bring a lot out of it, as well as just having fun.  I can only hope they make a version in English.

I read in Wired today that a world release is set for July http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/06/music-creation.html I really can't wait. I hope it doesn't take too long to get here, how much text could the app really have, right? I mean, they wouldn't make us wait past Christmas right? Right?

Good video that's pretty much how I picture the set up I'd like. I'm definitely considering getting a second DS so I can work with the other sound programs with the Korg.

I am so intrigued by this that I will buy it and, like most things of this sort in my collection of junk, never use it to its full potential due to the effort involved.

I actually am waiting for this to come out so I can begin an extensive sound project. If I treated this as something to mess around with I'd sort of just be wasting its potential. Sound, not necessarily music.

Im going to take it to an open mic and use it to make a beat so I can sing Hold On by Wilson Phillips over it.

That's awesome.  Allow me to suggest the use of vocal effects, if possible (maybe a vocoder, like that Cher song in which she sounds like a robot).

It's easy to hook up effect pedals to the DS, you can affect the entire system with just a few knobs and switches.

I have yet to listen to it, but Diplodicus has made and released a whole album made with Korg
http://mp3death.us/diplodocus.html
At this year's Extra- Hyper Game Music Event Nobuyoshi Sano and some others are going to perform using Korg
http://www.siliconera.com/2008/09/06/tokyo-hosts-extra-hyper-game-music-event-in-october/

Today on my birthday quest for a silver DS, I stopped by my non corporate game shop for one, but they didn't have it and so I got to talking with them and got them to order two copies for me, I was told that there is no language in the game so playing a Japanese copy would be fine. I haven't heard anything about a US release so ordering from them seemed like the good thing to do. It's nice to see the press that the game is getting though, it could be the best reason to own a DS if at all.

Downloading that DS-10 mix now.

The Korg DS-10 has been refused by Best Buy and Game Stop- it seems that Amazon is most people's best bet. There is still no official release date.

It's $40 and doesn't have Square Enix's brand recognition. I'd be weary of its ability to sell too. I honestly think $35 is too much for DS games.
Title: Re: Korg DS-10
Post by: TheFleece on October 14, 2008, 11:56:32 PM
I'm more concerned about the availability of the title, price be damned. Also this might be the very first DS title ever worth $40. It's definitely more complex than any Square Enix DS title.

I have this annoying feeling that because I live in Canada I'm going to be sh!t out of luck in buying this game.

I've only been able to find it on American sites.  Best Buy's American site doesn't ship to Canada and Amazon.com is very particular about what games can be shipped internationally.

Hey it goes both ways buddy, a few years back i wanted to get this awesome mp3 player and best buy was one of the few places that carried it, but for some stupid reason american best buy sonly carried it in blue and grey colors, yet Canadian Best Buys had the awesome red one i wanted but i was **** out of luck!

If by free shipping you mean $30 then yes.  ;)  The free shipping is only for America and if I lived in America then I wouldn't have a problem in the first place.

Though maybe I can get one of my friends to get it for my birthday.  He buys everything on eBay, even things that are readily available in local stores.  Last year when he asked what to get me for my birthday I suggested a classic controller.  He got me one on eBay from JAPAN when he could have just gone to the mall where it would have cost at least half what he paid.  D'oh!

So if I play it up like this a routine DS game he'll probably get it through eBay and pay out of his ass for it without once looking in a store. :)

Damn public education!!

Interesting review.  He kept going back and forth between its "Great" but "utterly pointless".  Personally, I already have a Korg Digital 12 track recorder as well as software for my Mac.  But, due to the fact I'm frequently away from these devices and bored, I think its a great tool.

I plan on using it to mess around with as well as add it to other projects I currently have on the Mac.

We'll have to start a new thread to share our masterpieces!

The gist of his review, to me, was that "if you're into this kind of stuff, you'll love it, but if you aren't you'll find this utterly useless".  Which is pretty much what I'd expect.  KORG DS-10 reminds me of when people review something like Ikaruga - for what it is, it's amazing, but it's so niche that you can't give it more than an 8/10 no matter how good it is.

I just got a mac so I'm hoping to run the Korg DS through whatever programs I have available as well so a thread to share is a given. I can't wait to get my hands on it!
Regardless of how niche it is- I know for a fact that many kids are interested in making music and if they had any idea that this sort of title was coming out they would want it, but since they don't know it may as well become "niche". It's a shame too because I think a lot of people would enjoy Korg DS if they knew it existed to begin with. I don't think it will move Pokemon units, but it's better than seeing those terrible DS crapware titles on the shelves.

is PC richards confirmed to carry this? I happened to be at a Best Buy and decided to check just in case, no luck. The J&R Music was close but i forgot about it till now. I can look on the site i guess but.. i'm pretty lazy... ;) hint hint

EDIT: Fixed my post, i mistakenly thought it was PC Richards which would carry it but its not. The closest J&R Music store would require a nice lil trip down into Manhattan. I won't mind though, I've been there once and its a freaking mega-store that was just plain awesome.

I'm going to use a simple line-in chord and plug it into the audio-in jack. It should let me hear and record fine that way.

Is it me or is the interface at times a little unresponsive? I calibrated my touch screen like 3 to 5 times and it got a little better. This piece of software is fantastic but it's definitely not newbie friendly. Once you get a hang of it past the learning curve then you can make some awesome beats. Since Industrial music is one of my favorite music genres maybe I can try to recreate some songs or make songs with a similar beat.

I don't have a issue with the controls, but I do notice that the effects take about a second to adjust and level out. I took it out last night and did my second DS performance. It was received well and I hope the video came out nice enough to show off. The minute I started playing around I felt the urge to use two stylus on the keyboards and drum pads, anyone else?

Lindy are you experiencing some of the unresponsive issues I'm having?

Doing what, exactly?

My problems is that some of the buttons in general are a little unresponsive it can be some of the menu buttons, some of the mixer sliders or those grids that you fill in the white little squares.

Would someone who has experience with Acid Foundry, Garageband, and Soundtrack be able to get the hang of this pretty fast?

I just got this in the mail and I'll play around with it a little later today, do you guys know whats the name of the audio cable that required to hook up the DS to a macbook via the DS headphone jack to the macbook's headphone or speaker jack?

1/8 inch to 1/8 inch TRS cable.  Run it into the line-in, which has the little pictogram of the two arrows pointing together with a circle in the middle.  You can get these at most electronics stores, or a music store such as Guitar Center.  You could also use a TS cable, although you won't be able to record in stereo.

Most likely.  I use Garageband all the time, so I'll let you know.  Hopefully, it'll arrive today.

For anyone on the fence about purchasing, here's a quick demo of what I can up with during my first five minutes:

Personally, I've got quite a bit of experience w/ Korg products so it was super easy to pick up w/o reading the manual.  However, for any noobs out there, it certainly isn't somthing you can't pick up with just 15-30 mins of reading, especially if you know Garage Band, or Reason.

Overall, I'm thoroughly enjoying it.  My only gripes are I wish I could increase the length of the beats, and a few different bass drums and snares would have been nice as well (although you can greatly alter their sounds).

Here is a video of my first Korg performance. I had it for about three days and came up with the music without reading the manual. I expect more and better performances in the future.

I do have some problems with changing the knobs but I'm getting better with it. It seemed intimidating when I bought it to flip through all the screens and see all the stuff you can play around with.

Ooo yeah, I got this for Christmas!  I've only gotten a chance to fool around a bit and man is this thing intimidating.  But I'm going to take some time to go through the manual and learn all the in's and out's.  As a guitar player I've never written anything on a synthesizer before and I'm up for the challenge.

Hell it's fun just to tinker with the thing.

Last night I messed around and really started to get a good idea of how this all works.  So I've got two songs now in the works.  Though I appear to want to use this in a very different way then it's designed.  Korg DS-10 wants me to make techno and I'm trying to do something else. ;)

I have had this game for awhile now and I have noticed the difference between my first few songs and the ones I can make now and it surprises me how much stuff they packed into this game. You can make some really super complex stuff.

I heard someone that this sold 110,000 units, but I can't seem to find my source again.

Korg DS Plus has just been announced for Japan! It's got twice of what Korg DS 10 has. I expect this to get the same distribution as the first Korg DS, but I'm still busy with all the features of that one and I don't think I could justify buying it so soon.
Here's a video of the title being announced in all it's awesomeness... to a fake audience
