Title: Nintendo Has No Plans to Cut Price of Wii or DS this Year
Post by: Nick DiMola on April 26, 2008, 07:35:53 AM
Due to strong demand and sales, Iwata reports that there are no plans for price cuts this fiscal year.

Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata reported in an interview with Reuters that Nintendo currently has no plans to decrease the price of either the Wii or the DS this year.

The already computed earnings projections for the year were not calculated with any price cuts in mind, according to Iwata.  Strong sales of both consoles along with strong consumer demand leads Nintendo to believe that price cuts for either system are unnecessary.

Analysts are predicting that Nintendo’s posted earnings projections for the year are actually on the conservative side and earnings will surpass the numbers projected by Nintendo.

and in other news water is wet.  there still having trouble keeping the wii in stock so they would be crazy to have a price cut.  i do think there will be one soon after x-mas or soon after Microsoft has another price cut.  at the very least some sort of bundle like a different game besides wii sports or an added game or controller or something.

Cutting the price in the US would be stupid anyway because of the Dollar.

If this wasn't totally obvious, Iwata is here to break it down for you.

For once, early adopters of a console are vindicated.

I could see a new bundle or a new color.  But I don't see a price drop even if its half as popular next year even for not this Christmas season but the next.  DS on the otherhand I can see.

There'll be new colors before a price drop. The Wii is just selling too well. Until the 360 price goes in to Wii range, I don't think there'll be a need for even that.

yes it was totally obvious.  when demand is higher than supply... you don't cut prices.  thats basic economics.

Considering how well the Wii is doing I wouldn't expect a price cut until summer 2010 at the earliest.

When did PS2 get it's first price cut?

I'd switch things around and offer Wii fit with the Wii for a discount package, and then I'd lower the DS's price, too, but I still feel like they need to be preemptive about this.

When you look at it, though, I'm absolutely astounded by the DS and the DS Lite.  It started November 2004, and has only had one price drop, down $30 from $150.  The PSP still is more expensive, but it's had several price and packaging changes, to compare.  I can't believe that we're nearing four years of the DS with no price drop in sight.  Honestly, I expected a drop back when we heard about the price fixing.  To me, this means that the profits on the DS have got to be outstanding, considering Nintendo sells hardware for profit.  We know the cost of manufacturing has lowered, so who knows how much Nintendo makes from each individual DS.

after the x-mas when the xbox and gamecube came out.  i remember working at game stop (still funcoland then) that x-mas and we were selling 2-3 ps2's every half hour or so.  that was from November till early February.  then around April it dropped 50 bucks.  the x-box did as well a day or two later.

IOW, you think a pricedrop in Europe is likely? (the 360 Arcade is 200E here, compared to 250E for the Wii)
