Title: The World Ends With You
Post by: KDR_11k on April 20, 2008, 02:07:32 PM
I've mulled it over during the weekend and will now probably buy it on Monday, anyone else pick that up yet?

i think i need to read up a little more on it before making a decision on purchasing. It looks good and stylish but i dont know if i can get into it or not, i'm not usually the rpg type.

Day 1 been looking at this game forever (since it was announced for Japan). The team behind this game is a very competent team and I have enjoyed past games of theirs. If anyone is on the fence about deciding what this game is about and perhaps want to see it in action, let me find the site. . . .
http://www.theworldendswithyou.com/
I just like the art style, its like Kingdom Hearts meets Jet Set Radio.

I actually tried checking out some videos on the site and it wouldnt load right for me, maybe i'll just buy it for the hell of it just to experience something new. I don't think i've heard anything negative about it anyway, so if i end up not enjoy it it'll be for my own reasons, and nothing to do with the game itself.

Got it today and played about an hour or so, definitely awesome~! One of the few action Rpgs out there where the battle system gameplay actually MAKES YOU WANT to play the game. Angsty main character Neku can get annoying though. . .

I went to pick it up at Gamestop and they sold out yesterday. They only had 3 copies.

Sounds like typical Gamestop shenanigans to me. Honestly, I haven't seen much interest in the media we've put up either, so this could end up being a missed gem by most of the public. If you can't find it locally by the end of the day, you should just order it online.

I plan to. The game sounds like fun, especially since it is coming from the developers of Kingdom Hearts AND it is such a unique game. It will be too bad if it bombs.

If I were to buy a new DS game, this would be it. I just can't justify buying a $40 DS game. ALL of Square-Enix's DS games are $40. It's like they think we're made of money.

This game is pretty damn rare, I've been searching for a few days for it (after spotting it last saturday) and it was nowhere to be found, I finally found three copies today (after searching eight stores), two of which were in a GameStop (hate those, they remove the wrap and put the pricetags on the box itself). I got the one that wasn't in a Gamestop. Same store I saw the XBox 360s in on launch day BTW. No idea if the game sold so quickly or if stores simply didn't want it (which would be strange, I've seen more copies of a third rate C&C knockoff than this). I wonder if it got advertised?
The game was priced at the normal 40 EUR (which isn't a given, some cost 42 and others go up to 50).
Icecold: Yeah, action RPG but with zoomed battles. The combat system is pretty unconventional. Your main character is pretty much a spellcaster using the touchscreen while you have a secondary character that fights with the dpad (combos and all).

Still enjoying the game the main character is becoming less emo but the whole item inventory and sub menu systems are so damn confusing, toss in the clothing, food, and fashion brand stuff to make me a very confused customer @___@. . .

I have a "no buying a game while working on a review" policy. The fact of the matter is I wont be able to focus on what I'm trying to review if I know there's a better game to play.
Right now I'm about ready to launch my DS into the sun, so I'm willing to guess The World Ends With Outrageous Clothes is better than what I'm playing.
Now that I've read this thread I've become worried that I wont be able to find it when I finish. I don't even know how much is left in the game I'm on. All I know is I need to grind and the game PREVENTS you from grinding.

Red/Blue/Green mushroom tins (collected them after i ate the candy)

Small scale replica of Hylian Shield and Mastersword (came with the soundtrack)
Hylian sheild and Master sword that i've yet to mount on my wall
Unopened copy of Zelda: A Link To The Past (re-release i believe, but still a collectible to me)
posable MegaMan X figure
Chain-Chomp Soccer ball
Stuffed Mario and Yoshi figures
NES contoller shaped belt buckle
Golden Triforce Belt buckle
Oh and various nintendo themed pins that i COULD put on my NES backback that i dont use.... man i wasted so much money out of my AWESOME Zelda wallet on this stuff :(

i was only able to play until that wolf boss thing since i was really only trying to check the game out. I still want to finish with Phantom Hourglass before starting this one, so i might even start my WEWY save file over again just so i dont forget what the hell is going on.
So far though the game is alright. Hasn't captured me yet, but i'm hoping it will. The dual combat system was a little confusing at first but its easy to adapt to when you realize you dont have to input EVERYTHING you see on the top screen (rather you just pick a combo and complete it). As for the bottom screen battles... I didn't really like how i'd try to run and instead i'd use my Fire Psyche move instead. I guess that comes from playing Zelda so much recently where you tap and drag anywhere on screen to move your character. I'm sure once i give the game the proper time i'll adjust.

Yeah, it's definitely hard to dodge. You basically have to press on Neku and then drag, but like you said, that input overlaps with a lot of pin inputs. I finally beat it last night, and afterwards you can skip to any chapter to collect pins and extra reports related to the story. The plot is really good by the way, and it keeps you guessing to the very end.

Are you getting high ranks in battles? Your pin experience is based on performance, so if you're always getting Es, it's gonna be slow going. You'd have to be spending a lot of time between sessions to make up for it too.

Depends on the battle, the rank varies greatly though the result always seems to be around 3-7 PP. Off-time gives you one PP per 10 minutes I think, that adds up quickly. I play the game on the commute so it's only on for an hour or two a day. Plenty of time to get PP. To match the 144 PP on the first day I'd have to fight 20-30 battles, that's a lot and I don't fight nearly as much per day. I'd have expected something like 5-10 PP per day, when I turned the DS on for the first time after getting the shutdown sticker all my equipped pins shot up to max level.

I was getting between 30 - 150 PP out of each battle. Try raising your difficulty setting or lowering your experience level.

I was considering checking out WEWY before, but your review sold me to it. I've been itching for a good DS game, and this looks right up my alley.
One question, do you write the reviews while someone else narrates or do you write the review and narrate it?

I think gametrailers.com hires professional or highly skilled narrators to read the review scripts.

Brandon, who reads most of the scripts, is actually one of the guys who started the site back in the day. If you listen to episode 5 of Invisible Walls, you can get the full story. The other guy (Rob) is one of our video editors who's also an actor.

I bought the soundtrack off of Itunes now since I bought Parallels for my MacBook and Parallels(the company) sent me a 15 dollar Itunes giftcard as a thank you for purchasing their software, so I spent 9.99 of it on the soundtrack and even though I do no like hip hop normally, this has a nifty blend of hip hop and rock types of music.

So far I don't think I'd take the soundtrack even if it was free.
What I'd definitely hold against the game is that you don't unlock the ability to replay a failed battle immediately until after the fifth day. Going through a looooong cutscene again because you lost against a boss is FAIL.

Really? I didn't die until the Joshua chapter. In matter of fact up until the 2nd major boss I have had no issues but now the game has become extremely hard, perhaps I should grind a few level to pick it up.
I really love this story though, the little plot twists here and there really make you rethink some characters.

I died right away during my first few battles IIRC. Of course I have no trouble when I use my full power ("There's something you should know. I'm not left-handed either!") but most of the time I fight at lv1 for maximum drops.

I've been trying to review this for the last week now and I'm having a tough time. I still don't feel like I'm "getting" the battle system. I can't help but feel like I'm brute forcing the enemies and missing some layer of finesse.

So scratch indeed...
I think you are pretty much meant to brute force on the top screen, your defenses are limited so suppression fire seems like the only option.

I'm totally digging this game. Stupid question though, how do I get Shiki to do jumping combos? I know the instructions said to press up to jump, but when she does that she only throws her teddy bear thing at the ground hitting nothing. What am I doing wrong? The old spam left or right strat seems to be working, but I'd like a bit more variety.

GODDAMN ONE-TIME EVENTS
Here's the deal. I'm on day 3. I'm right before the bat boss. I just got the Ramen and Cough Drops memes and spent 20 minutes wandering around trying to figure out what to do with them. In frustration, I looked it up online and found out I was supposed to use them on the tech, who's already entered the concert hall. So am I screwed with no way of doing this? Did I miss anything important?
Title: Re: The World Ends With You
Post by: bosshogx on May 24, 2008, 10:16:22 AM
I'm a little bit further than you, but did the exact same thing. Apparently:
Once you beat the game, you can go back and replay any chapter to get things you may have missed.
Honestly though, I wouldn't let it bother you. It reminds me of the old SNES days when I'd see a treasure chest in a corner when I was at the exit of a dungeon. Being young and greedy, I'd backtrack all the way to the chest to get it's contents. Inevitably, it would be a sword or piece of armor that was 1 or 2 points better than what I was currently using. By the time I'd get to the next town, the items would be surpassed by the newer equipment.

I'm to day 3 and so far the game is tons of fun and has a simple yet still compelling story.
I have a question though, in regards to the battle difficulty could i technically beat the whole game on easy? Or does playing on easy all the time make the game harder as you near the end since you don't get the good drops?
Title: Re: The World Ends With You
Post by: Pale on May 29, 2008, 09:28:04 AM
You can beat the whole game on easy pretty much. There is a cool feature you get very soon, that lets you replay a battle when you die without having to go back to your last save point.
When you replay you can also go ahead and pick "Replay on easy" as an option. This allows you to set your difficulty to normal or hard, but still have easy to fall back on if it means losing a ton of progress.
The difficulty settings affect your ability to collect everything in the game more than they affect actually beating the game.
Title: Re: The World Ends With You
Post by: KDR_11k on May 29, 2008, 02:36:32 PM
I haven't tried easy, I play on higher difficulties and at lower levels to get the most loot. I think if you always play at full level the game is fairly easy even at medium difficulty. I know for one big boss (the one that gives you the "replay battle" feature IIRC) I failrd at low levels so I just moved the slider to maximum. Felt kinda like "Now face my TRUE power!", I whipped the boss so badly I could probably have left the slider a good bit lower.
Title: Re: The World Ends With You
Post by: vudu on May 29, 2008, 02:54:42 PM
I'm on day four, and I play on nothing but normal with my level set to 1. So far I kick ass.
I have a question about the money pins. Is there any point in not cashing these out immediately? I've seen a few items in shops that you need to trade the low value ones (1, 10, etc.) instead of paying money, but that's it. Also, the menu descriptions say that these pins can evolve, but they look like they're maxed out. Am I missing something?
Anyone see the Zero Punctuation review (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/67-The-World-Ends-With-You)? I've been avoiding it because I'm sure there are spoilers related to the story that I don't want to hear.

I play the same way, medium difficulty on level one. The only problem with that is when you stumble into a boss fight or fighting any of the medium to large noise in week 3. Beat sucks as a partner.
I'm quite a bit further along then you are and I can say this about money pins: Don't get rid of all of the lower value ones. Some quest items require the 1, 5, 10, and 50 pins for trading later on in the game. The problem is that the enemies you face won't drop those values anymore. Do yourself a favor and stock up on them, it couldn't hurt, right?
I have have leveled up a 10 yen pin into a 100 yen pin at which point it became mastered. I still haven't figured out how to get a regular 10 yen pin though. Some items require them right now and I can't get em. Oh well....
Oh yeah one last thing, load up on bravery foods. Bravery requirements for items balloons later on in the game.
The stupid part about the ZP review is at the end he implies you have balls if you play FPSes. LOL DOUCHE BAG.
Wait, they don't?! ;)
I seriously love his reviews as he is right on the money nine times out of ten.

My progress in the game was halted by getting several good books in rapid succession and getting Brothers in Arms DS for cheap so I haven't played TWEWY in a long time...

I beat the game a few weeks back and started unlocking the secret reports before getting bored of it. Went to gamefaqs and read the story. Pretty cool back story. Now I'll go Youtube the extra ending.

Compared to who comes next, Joshua is a dream. Actually, Joshua gets halfway decent on the 6th day or so.

I'm starting to warm up to Joshua. I'm on day 3, and really getting the hang of his fusion.
On an unrelated note, I have a question about pins. Is there any reason for me to stock pile the regular attack pins? I have like 50 each of the Murasame and Sexy Beam pins. (I used to have close to 100 each, but I had to start dumping them because I filled the stoke pile limit of 200.) Like, am I ever going to walk into a stock and there's going to be a quest item and the merchant wants a whole ****-ton of these attack pins in exchange for it?

Not really. During the 2nd week, the enemies drop regular pins much more frequently than the money pins. Much later on in the game, one of the stores was selling a Jupiter of the Monkey attack pin that I hadn't seen before (I forget the name). Anyways, they wanted like 10 of one of the earlier JofM pins as a quest trade. Problem is, you had to have them all evolved, which I wasn't going to take the time and do. It's up to you, but at that point, I was past the "gotta catch 'em all" collection aspect of the pins.
I looked into the manual, I know who comes next. Seems they give you worse and worse partners to increase the difficulty...
Maybe it's just me, but it seems you have to pay more attention to your partners the longer the game goes on in order to keep them alive and maximize your fusions. Shiki was the best. 3 cards and great mobility/attacking options. Although, I did play the game by rapid spamming left or right on the d-pad while occasionally looking up to see which side the enemy was on. Screw all those branching attack trees.

Agreed. I couldn't divert my attention between the screens like that. Spamming left or right was always the best strategy for me. As for pins, I don't see a point in collecting ALL of the pins. I just used the ones I liked and stuck to them. But, if you needed to evolve pins in a jiffy, toying with the DS's clock works best.

Meh, two 4-chain battles in a row and you've got a lot of PPs.

Bump.
So I seemed to have stopped earning PP after battles. What gives? I'm on day 3 of Beat, and haven't earned a single spec of PP the whole week. At first I thought it was a story element that would be explained, but ... nothing. Is there anything I can do, or are my pins doomed to stay at the same level for the rest of the game?

Have they maxed out their level? Pins can do that, ya know.

I bet you have an article of clothing equipped that stops you from gaining PP. Double check your "diggs" or "threads" or whatever the hip kids say now-a-days.

Okay, maybe I am an idiot.
This was the problem. Neku was wearing a dress (don't ask) stopped us from getting battle PP. What a worthless article of clothing. I really wish there was a way of "unlearn" an item's ability, because I really liked this dress but I can't wear it anymore.
I'd like to believe that I didn't know the dress' ability when I first put it on and then learned it after entering a shop, but chances are I just wasn't paying enough attention when equipping myself on the start of day 1.
That's my biggest complaint with the game--the menu system is overly complicated. I don't like that info on the pins and items are spread out over 3 or 4 pages. It makes it difficult to look at a large number of possibilities and determine which is the best in a given situation.
I wish there was on option to auto-equip the best items depending on a set of basic criteria (e.g. defensive, offensive, increased HP, well-rounded, better items to go my partner, etc.). It would make up for the terrible menus.

i played it the day i got it, then put it down to finish other games. then i ignored my DS for months due to backed up wii games i wanted to complete. i played it once more and realized i didnt save so i had to to the intro over again, got really into the fighting system (its.. interesting...)
then i didnt play for months. i tried it again a few weeks ago and i go and started trying to defeat some "noise" to break the curse of that statue thing and died after a few battles. havent played since.

I hear ya with those menus. I hated having to go "phone"->"pin" to get to my pin list. It would have been nice to have a configurable hot key or two (the shoulder buttons maybe?) that would jump you right to where you wanted to go. Oh well, maybe in the sequel...if there is one.

I did the same thing with Battalion Wars 2. Of course, that was around the whole holiday season, but still no excuse to leave it hanging like that. I definitely think you should pick it back up and give it another chance. The combat system is the best and the story isn't half bad. Neku actually becomes a likeable character as the game progresses and there are plenty of triple double crosses down the road. Some are obvious, others not so much.
The pin system reminds me a lot of the "catch em all" aspect of Pokemon for both good and bad. Much like Pokemon, I was having a blast getting the pins and leveling up, but after a while I didn't care as much and just wanted to finish the game. That's probably just me though.

oh i loved the game when i did play it, i think my problem is i just can't find the time to play it. Last summer i was unemployed and had a ton of time so i went on a Pheonix Write binge and played those games plus a few others almost nonstop (while i wasnt looking for work of course) but since this fall i've neglected my DS because of work. The few chances i get to relax and play a game, i'm usually sitting at my computer and go back and forth from it to wii. The ds i usually play when i really have nothing to do and i know i can be lazy in bed or on the couch (or toilet)

I just want to say how lame it is that your level maxes out at 100. I hit 100 on Day 5 of Beat.
I've pretty much played the whole game at level 1 (on hard), so I guess it doesn't matter too much anyway. I only had to bump it up to around level 20 for a couple of particularly nasty boss fights.
