Alright, Vudu and Pale, when can you play?
Title: Re: HULA HOOPS Tournament. Round one and two have begun!
Post by: vudu on April 10, 2008, 03:58:14 PM
I'm available tonight probably between 8 and 10 CST and Saturday morning.

EasyCure and I were already planning on rumbling, so this works out well.

Wait a minute, items on low?  What kind of crap is this?

Caliban we are both Pacific time aren't we? Let me know of a time, I cannot do saturday. So either tomorrow or this afternoon.

Well, if you prefer them on normal, we can switch things around.  I made one indulgence for myself in the rules, and that was that the items would be set to low rather than high.  Since players are allowed to play around with the requirements, I didn't think there'd be an issue.

I think Saturday evening is my only blackout time (not counting time spent at work).

I'm on Eastern time. I can't do it today because I've got to finish an assignment, but tomorrow will be perfect. Depending on how my day goes at school tomorrow I will be available from 5pm until 2am or 3am on Saturday, which in Pacific time means that I'm available from 2pm to midnight I think.

Any one opposed to letting Smash_Brother in?

No?

Ok, as long as he wants in, he's in, and he plays the two players with byes.  Now to talk to him.

I should just PM them, then?

I can play right now, but you'll have to give me a moment, my Wii is malfunctioning.

Edit:  No, wait, I think my roomie is literally downstairs with a different Wii-Remote, just messing with me.

Yup, he thought I wouldn't realize it.

PRO-TIP: In heavy lag, use a slow character, it makes a world of difference!

I can't quite set up a specific time yet but I'll be available at some point.

Anyone who's playing me try AIMing me at PaleZer0 (the 0 is the number zero)

Order doesn't really matter of the first two rounds due to double elimination, correct?

I don't mean to sound like a sore loser, because I mean no ill to Armak for winning fair and square, but there's just no way to say this next bit without sounding like a whiny baby.  I am apparently absolutely incapable of adjusting to lag, and I am about ready to just stop trying.  I hope you win, Ceric, because then I'll be out of this mess before I embarrass myself any further.

I lost against DAaaMan64, 2-0. Some wierd connection issue happened during our second match, so unfortunately we had to redo a second match.

Yeah there was a misunderstanding. I didn't join the tournament. What I posted was: "I'd love to join, but my FC is broken".

So basically I can't play.

I'd recommend using Ike. He seems to suffer the least from lag of any character.

Pale, I tried without luck to add Dasmos. It says "The Friend Code you entered is Incorrect" or something to that order.

Also, S_B took down both my Pikachu in round 1 and my Kirby in round 2.

HELLO CONSOLATION BRACKET, HERE I COME.

Post by: decoyman on April 12, 2008, 03:25:12 PM
Hey, I got beat down pretty soundly (at least in the second match), but it would've been cool to just do 3:00 min time matches instead, so we could have recorded them and then seen each other playing. It could've been like a shortened version of the playoffs or something. With stock, though, there's no guarantee that the match will be short enough.

Just my two cents.

Thatguy's lying.  I totally kicked his ass.  At least I would have if he didn't get three goddamn smash balls in the first match.  WTF.
Title: Re: HULA HOOPS Tournament. Round one and two have begun!
Post by: that Baby guy on April 12, 2008, 03:41:25 PM
Regardless, I beat you the next match, the one after that, and one or two after that.

You just suck at getting smash balls, plain and simple.  It's not like the IC's FS really does anything, anyways.

I beat EasyCure in a melee stage extravaganza.

Big blue is lame.

Also, S_B took down both my Pikachu in round 1 and my Kirby in round 2.

That first match was insanely close.

The Kid Icarus level is about the worst Bowser level, and nearly tied is the 75m stage. If folks here have seen the 300, remember the scene of the war elephants slipping on bodies and falling off the cliff and that's basically Bowser on those stages.

I'm probably going to regret saying that now, as everyone will pick those stages when facing me, heh.

Tourney rules state that levels are to be randomly selected.

Hey, and don't blame the stage, give me some credit - I was doing well that first round.:P I had you down to one stock, with three stock left myself, and then the inability to recover began. I actually missile-headbutteded myself FURTHER from the stage one time as I tried to get back, and then of course didn't make it back at all. I bet you got some laughs out of that - your "Doh!" taunt is very fitting:) For me, it was more "GAH, NO PIKA, WHY?!"

For the next match, though Pikachu's my main, I decided to choose Kirby because the 'chu's recovery had been so hit-or-miss in the previous match... but when you can't land a blow, it doesn't matter how many times you get back to the stage, I suppose.

Nice matches, btw, your Bowser is really strong.

I hope everything goes well, Ceric.  Not the way I wanted to survive the opening rounds, really.  I still hope to get to play you eventually.

I'd recommend using Ike. He seems to suffer the least from lag of any character.

It's a shame I'm terrible with Ike offline, then.  If it didn't take three years to get a random match, I'd be able to practice more and maybe get over my problem.  Since I think I sounded even worse in that whiny post now than I thought I did when I wrote it, let me just say that Armak played very well and probably would have won regardless.  I just get frustrated when I don't feel like I played my best, win or lose.  You can ask my local Smash buddy, who gets exasperated with me getting angry when I'm beating him by 10 KOs.  It just irks me because I know I can beat him by 15.  ;)

Faster characters are harder to play as in laggy fights. Their moves come out fast but the hit "window", if you will, is much shorter. The larger characters attacks might be slow but because their animations are longer they are easier to land in a lag filled match where your timing is skewed.

I have a friend who plays Ike and beats me online, but when we play locally I usually beat him. Ike is ideal in a laggy match because his attacks are long lasting, hard hitting and have huge range.

Weren't you paying attention?  Ceric just had a baby, forcing him to drop out of the tourney.  We're back to an odd number.
Title: Re: HULA HOOPS Tournament. Round one and two have begun!
Post by: that Baby guy on April 13, 2008, 11:53:35 AM
Actually, Shecky, you could jump in and fill the byes, but you'd need to play the matches pretty quickly.  I don't have a problem with it, but since it's farther into the start of the tournament, if someone else has an issue with a delay, though I doubt they would, I guess you couldn't be in.

So, if you want to play, you should message the two players with byes and see when you can match them.

Hey, and don't blame the stage, give me some credit - I was doing well that first round.:P

I'm not questioning your Pika skills, but the level killed YOU a couple times as well, if I'm not mistaken.

So yeah, that whole match would've gone differently if not for the level.

It's a shame: when I first saw that stage in videos, I thought it looked really neat, but in practice, it's just a horrible, horrible stage.

I still can't believe I survived that. There was one point when I got the smash ball and was thinking, "Crap, I'm probably going to get myself killed with this." like I have in the past. When I was Up+B-ing through the platform while changing back to Bowser, I was stunned I lived.

You're one of the more evil 'chus I've dealt with, that's for sure.

Quote
I bet you got some laughs out of that - your "Doh!" taunt is very fitting:)

It was more like "phew!", actually.

But the "Doh" taunt is pretty much the most appropriate for any situation. It applies so often when someone dies because the game does something stupid.

Title: Re: HULA HOOPS Tournament. Round one and two have begun!
Post by: Smash_Brother on April 13, 2008, 04:21:22 PM
I'm generally not a fan of any stage where you spend more time fighting the level than you do the other players.

That includes 75m, Mario Bros., Big Blue, the Kid Icarus level because everything you do destroys the level from beneath you, Jungle Falls, etc.

For people who are going to chastise me for disliking these, remember that every additional random element which must be tracked from Wii to Wii further lags the game. I've played with a group of four players without lag, then the next round went to 75m and started lagging like crazy.

I'm not at all averse to the Warioware level because it only occasionally has you do minigames.

I agree with a possible lag issue if your talking about internet lag.  I do love those other types of levels too the because of how much more interesting it can make fights. It also helps you measure a players greed.

I agree with you, SB.  A stage is no good, IMO, if you can't fight someone the entire time, and instead have to avoid things going on all the time.  However, some people are nuts over making sure that everything is completely left alone with what Sakurai made, so I left the rules alone.

Results were all technically due at 3:00 PM EST, but I'll extend the deadline to 9:00 PM EST because I didn't make that clear earlier.

No problem... just looking to get a few matches in really.

As for the levels, I actually like the Kid Icarus level quite a bit.  I've learned to leverage a few of it's unique traits. :)

Let's do this:  Let's let Shecky in, but give him a penalty or something, since we've mostly gone through two rounds.  Should we let him in but give him a "loss?"  Is there any less significant of a penalty, or is that fair?

This is all for fun.  I don't think anyone here is that serious about if you come in late.  (I know I'm not.)

I think thatguy should start to schedule the losers into a separate tournament so we can determine who the worst Brawl player is at NWR.

Anyways, I hope you saw that you're in this, Shecky.  You've got three matches to make up for the lost ground.

I let him in, he's playing three rounds, actually, in the period that most everyone else is playing one.  He's playing the bye'd players from the first two rounds.  Let's just hope he wins one of the first two matches, so everything isn't thrown off.

SB tears everyone a new one.  Occasionally, I'll get in a good game, but 9 times out of 10 he beats me to a pulp (and I get the feeling he goes easy on me).

Can you imagine how funny it would be if someone with the handle Smash_Brother sucked at the game?

After I got a rhythm of how he played, I had an easier time, so I expect things to go a little differently if we match up again.

Actually, I should probably play him some more, it was pretty fun.

Nice matches, DAaaMan. I took this round, and learned a valuable lesson - don't underestimate Olimar's Forward-B (the one where he shoots Pikmin at you, which then stick to you and beat away at you until you knock them off.)

I think the term is harassment, dude. :P

Let me make one thing very, very clear: the one and ONLY reason I am good at SSB in any way shape or form is because I had, for 5-7 years, a group of solid players I would often play with every single day.

That's how I got where I am: by getting my balls handed to me if I didn't constantly improve. Someone figures out a strategy in the group. You lose for a while, then you figure out how to see it coming and counter it, and I did this for around 7 years.

But the funny part is that, since my group has dissolved and moved on in the world, I routinely get beaten by a Canadian friend who still has a group just like this who he plays with regularly (he knows how jealous I am of it).

Now that my group is gone, I count myself lucky for having had one at all because without it, I never would've had all that practice otherwise.

Quote
Can you imagine how funny it would be if someone with the handle Smash_Brother sucked at the game?

That was an irony I hoped I could at least avoid. You might remember posts from earlier when I mentioned that I wasn't sure how I'd measure up to others, mainly because I had no idea where I really stood.

You have two situations I believe happen in offline SSB circles:

Situation 1: One friend dominates all other friends. As a result, s/he never improves and does poorly against situation #2 players.

Situation 2: A group of friends are all competitive, all about the same skill level. When four of them sit down to a game, it could go any which way. They keep developing new strategies and then developing counter-strategies based upon each other's playstyle. Still, all players will only grow as far as they're challenged to grow, meaning the players' overall skill levels influence how far they can take their collective game.

I was fortunate enough to have a situation 2, but I couldn't be sure how far I'd actually come.

To give a basic example of strategies and counter strategies, I'll bring up a classic one between me and my friend Darrel, back with SSB64, and Samus vs. Link...

As Link, I'd always use my Dair on him, but this was eventually stopped when he learned to shield and up+B as a counter. Then, one day, I figured out that pressing Z just as Link hit the ground would cause him to bring up his shield immediately, meaning I could shield his up+B and whallop him with a smash attack afterwards.

It sounds trivial (just learning parts of the game, really) but this is the start of progression when it came to improving our overall game.

It's a pretty safe bet that everyone here who plays SSBB has tons and TONS of untapped potential which will be unlocked as they play more online SSBB, but that only comes from facing challenging opponents who force you to get better. It's actually a neat feeling when I'm playing someone online and I notice that they've figured out one of my strategies and are countering it accordingly (primarily when it's someone I know from online).

I personally don't buy into the "LULZ I PWNED JOO!" mentality of most internet games, hence why I'll never taunt at the end of a match (I don't have a mocking taunt, ironically). It's just a chance to learn and get better at the game. Why? Maybe for tournaments some day or just for the hell of it. Or maybe you have a RL friend you want to trounce.

No matter what the reason, I'm happy to be a sparring partner for folks who want to improve their game and I don't look down on people I win against. God knows I'm still learning characters as well and I've learned a thing or two from a number of NWR folks already.

I used to play Event 51 obsessively, which is the reason why I ONLY play as a high-risk opportunist (who dares, lolz).

The slippery shieldy low-risk high-priority strike tactics don't get you very far when one's aim is to win without losing stock in the event.

Then Brawl came out, ruined the game, and such opportunist tactics only lead to certain death.

And i'll soon give up on Brawl when Mario Wheeling comes out.

Sorry that you're out of the tourney... but it was either you or me. Regardless of who won, it was gonna suck for one of us.

Totally down with squaring off again... If enough more people get fed up with online, maybe lag will drop to negligible levels. At least we can always hope.

I have a question for Thatguy, and all of you in the tournement really:

How would you feel if i gave up my spot to Vudu?

I know this isn't a serious tourney but i just want to make sure all of you think its fair before i just hand it to him. He and i discussed it after our last round matches and he's ok with it as long as everyone else is.

I don't think i'll have time to get my tourney rounds in for this week. I can only play for like an hour tonight after work and even that will be cutting into my schedule, and i have no idea when Pale is able to play. I'd rather Vudu take my spot since our matches were pretty much down to the wire, so i'm sure he'll go as far as i would of gone if i was participating.

I'll try to be part of the next tournament though, whether thats for Brawl or Mario Kart. I'll still be on weekends to play any one of you randomly though, so don't take me off your friend rosters!!!

Wouldn't #3 (& #4) be one of the people who lost to the guys who made it to the final round?  This is really just a way to find out who the worst Smash player is on NWR.  (And, considering I was the only person who lost both round 1 & 2, I suppose that's me!)

Not true. He could be practicing right now, developing a new strategy against Bowser players (which is why I'd pull out my second main...as soon as I figure one out).

Honestly, my weakness is being rattled by a player pulling something on me I'm not familiar with under pressure. That's why Thatguy nearly won our 2nd match: his Ice Climber biorhythm kicked in and he was figuring out how to handle my Bowser. Had the items not gone severely in my favor, it'd have gone the other way, as I was down a stock for most of the match.

I think half the advantage of Bowser as a main is that so few people play him seriously that hardly anyone has experience fighting a Bowser player. Once they DO have that experience, Bowser becomes a bit easier to deal with, it seems.

The lag on all of his moves generally means there are only ever so many tricks he can pull out, and while they're powerful tricks, they're limited by quantity and that makes him predictable.

No, since it's a double elimination tournament, the 3rd and fourth placers may not wind up being the last ones left.  For instance, if someone early on lost to the top two, whereas your third and fourth may have lost to the some mediocre player and the 2nd placer, are we sure 3rd is really the best one?

For those curious, in the Fox vs. Fox match, I was up two lives to one, when EasyCure nabbed a Smash ball.  He instantly killed me.  He then sat around for about half the life of the Landmaster while he waited for me to respawn.  I finally was forced back onto the playing field, and desperately tried to avoid him until his Final Smash ended.  I was standing on top of his Landmaster and he was about to shoot me off (and most likely kill me) when time ran out.  This took place in mid-air at the very bottom of the screen, with no ground below us, so EasyCure died about a half a second before I did, thus securing me a win.

It seemed funnier at the time; I guess you had to be there.

I recorded it just for the fact that Manaphy FINALLY showed up.

He should have hovered you off the top while you were still invincible.

i forgot about that :(

and Vudu, it really is one of those "only funny in the moment situations" as are most Smash stories i think. I remember once when me and my friend Joe were playing SSB64 on the original Mushroom Kingdom leve, the one with the pipes you could go in/out of. At one point in the game it just felt like it was impossible for us to die. We'd counter each other constantly and the few hids we did land would end up throwing us into a wall or something and keep us from dying.

So for the first few minutes of this we were just annoyed and things got really quiet as we both wanted to KO eachother. Then things started getting hilarious when we'd get smashed around like a pinball. I think it ended when he smashed me into a pipe, pounced off the side of one of the platforms, hit a bob-omb, flew back up into a pipe with a pirhanna plant sticking out of it, i think he threw a second bob-omb at me, which caused me to fly straight up and die at like 500% (ok it was more like 300%). the framerate started dropping with all the back and forth so we were able to see every little thing poor Link hit on his way to death. It was hilarious then, still is when WE talk about it, but everyone else doesnt get it cuz you just had to be there.

Same goes for this one time i was playing one of the Last Event matches in Melee (cant remember which one) when again the framerate started to drop and a CPU Pikachu came out of nowhere with that mid-air attack that does multiple hits, i think its his down-A where he spins and headbutts you(?), and the game slowed down to a snails pace, to the point where i thought everything froze... until BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! everyone but pikachu goes flying in every direction at, no lie, 999%. I was blown away and started laughing my ass off but no one was around to see it, so when i tell my friends they just looked at me like i was on crack

My random choice that round was the Mario Bros. stage.  I was so happy when Temple loaded up instead.  :)

I feel a lot better about my performance this time around.  I guess I should try developing a "main" of my own if I want to stand a chance.  I just get bored playing the same character all the time.  Maybe if it was Jigglypuff....

Pale was forced to drop out of the tourney because he was too busy not doing his taxes.  I win by default.

And since I have a bye in round 4, this means that the only player to lose both of his opening rounds will make it into (almost) the final round.  How weird is that?

But never fear--SB will most likely destroy me.

It would be different because in a time match a viable strategy is to avoid the other player if you're winning and time is running out.

Ah, yeah, that's true. Ok, so, a stock match with time limits would be a good compromise, then. I vote for that:)

Thats what i meant to say. Also, i wouldnt really want a time limit to declare the winner so what if we do something like this:

Players A and B do a 4 stock/3min match.
If time runs out and neither player's stock has ran out, play a second match at whatever stocks were left and another 3 mins time.

Or is that too complicated?

Yeah i didnt think that would. I just wouldnt want to watch a replay of one person dodging for 3 mins to avoid a KO.

if you want replays, just make stock 2 instead of 4 and make it best of 5 instead of 3 ... those matches should be under 3 mins.

Decoy and I  had our matches.  A couple of Pikachus!  I would have loved to send those replays out to you guys... let me see if I can paraphrase:

"PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKA"

Something like that :)

Matches were great test of wits actually and overall very close.  I've never really had to go up against another fast character in these matches, let alone another Pikachu - so it was really fun duking it out.

Result: 2-1 (Shecky)

Shecky's normal pikachu took out my green-headband pikachu for the win tonight, 2-1.

Fun matches though! Even when I was dying horribly, I was chuckling about it. :P Like when you were hanging on the ledge, and I threw a capsule at you, but it broke open before it got to you and a lightning bolt came out and landed right on your head, just as I was racing over. I think I got small, then you plowed me right off the stage. That was pretty awesome, even if I was on the wrong side of the exchange. XD

And as long as there's a Pikachu in the tourney still, I can rest easy. Good games!

Edit: Beat me to it! As you said, it was a great match of wits. And yes - two Pikachus can really start gnawing at the eardrums, can't they?

Edit Tew: After we finished, was that you who joined up with us, thatguy? If so, those were some fun matches. We've all got to play against each other more often. I particularly enjoyed the epic story of Nana and Popo, told through taunts. (though you should maybe practice on the order so you don't have to try like 8 times :P )

Yeah that was hilarious, as was the time on the battle ship where we essentially looked like synchronized Pikachus.  To the point where our moves would cancel or hit simultaneously - we even timed the side-B special right so that we crossed mid-level.

I believe "Damn it!  Quit thinking like me!" is what I said during that segment of the match ;)

That was me, and I know the order.  I just like to do their down taunt, then up taunt, then back and forth over and over and over again.  It's what I do.

I played against S_B, good games.  First match was close, but SB managed to stay alive close to 200% and that proved the key.  Also, I always forget that Bowser's FS will cancel Pikachu's second quick dash... and thus SB got two quick kills on me the second match, giving him the 3-1 stock advantage.  So I conceded the second match.

Result: 2-0 SB

I thought it was funny when King Bulbin plowed us both off the screen.

And for once the Kid Icarus level didn't royally screw me over but seemed to screw you over (I think you had two recovery deaths where the ledge to catch just wasn't there).

I thought it was funny when King Bulbin plowed us both off the screen.

That was indeed comical :)

I also liked how I shrewdly avoided every single blast of your cracker launcher, only to get pegged squarely in the nose by the actual item when you tossed it afterwards. :D

I did indeed have two recovery SD on that level, and one recovery miracle (Headbutted underneath the platform and UP-B to the oposite side of the screen)

That whole match was not kind to me at all, but that's smash for you. ;)

That whole match was not kind to me at all, but that's smash for you. ;)

That level is just heinously designed, IMHO. If the edge pieces are destroyed, there's suddenly zero ledge catch, and they couldn't be arsed to ensure that the inner pieces allow you to catch on their edge if there's no piece adjacent to them.

It's little touches like that and the fact that a landmaster can fall through a tiny opening a fraction of its size that really show they spent too much time on the damn SSE and not enough time testing for bugs and imbalances, like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiW90quHDqg&feature=related

And here's an interesting glitch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7pnbF-LRAc&NR=1

Those were good matches, Armak, and I'm becoming savvy to your play style as a result (evidenced by my string of wins near the end of the night). I'd say your Diddy is the best I've seen to date.
Title: Re: HULA HOOPS Tournament. Round 5 has begun!
Post by: that Baby guy on April 25, 2008, 06:27:52 PM
No, no, no, S_B.  The Ice Climbers could always chain grab.  They're built to have exceptionally poor grabbing range to make this more difficult, and characters each have different timing based on size and weight.  Not to mention that even with a "glitch" like that, pros still consider the IC's to be "middle tier."  That type of throwing is part of what helps compensate with the fact that they weigh about an ounce and have about three inches of attack range most of the time.

Kind of like how Bowser can jump forever over ground with the right attack.  That's considered legal because he's not exactly the highest tier.

I still agree with you, though.  For how few characters were added, I really think balance should have been better.  So far, a good Olimar trumps everything any time.

Alright, I suppose we're at the final round!  Armak vs. Smash_Brother.

Now, I'd like to do something a little different.  As you've probably noticed, everyone wants to see the replays, yadda yadda yadda.

What we're going to do is cut to two stock matches.  Stages are still random, but there's a difference.  I've seen some complaints here about stages, and it's true, not all stages work for all characters.  You each may submit up to five stages you want off of the random list.  Be sure to turn them off before you fight!

Remember, you can negotiate additional rule changes if you would like to.

Additionally, since we're switching to two-stockers, we're going to go with the best of nine, or the first to five wins.  If the match is within the time constraints, save it and you can share to those leeches like Decoyman.

so much hate. I leave for 2 days to write my exams and everybody turns on me haha. I'll have to think about which stages I don't want in, I think anything that scrolls should be tossed, and the melee stages really are cramped...

It's ok I can end it for you in five ;) I'm all about final destination, but I think it might ruin the anti-tourny*** nature of the tournament, I mean, why don't we turn off items while we're at it? It's just for fun so it doesn't really matter to me. Whatever people decide is what I'll do, but I'm taking my bananas with me because watching people trip is just funny.

Sadly, no.

We nearly finished it last saturday, but we stopped because Armak was definitely lagging, and I say that because I know how he plays as Diddy and he really wasn't playing on par with his usual performance.

I've been immensely busy and I haven't seen him online since (he has computer problems anyway).

I could upload the four matches we played if folks want, but I think those who've been "banana raped" will agree that this wasn't the same level of Diddy play you saw before.
