Title: I PWN JOO ALL...
Post by: Smash_Brother on March 18, 2008, 01:31:39 PM
...with my lag, apparently. :(
I know most folks here are out in the western/southern parts of the US, but is it even possible to play a match with me? I think I've just gotten used to the lag at this point and have learned to input commands far enough in advance that they'll happen when I need them to happen.
I've made absolute certain that my outgoing traffic is COMPLETELY unblocked, and I was able to play Strikers online just fine back when I had it.
It's playable for me when I'm playing 1v1s, but as soon as a 3rd person joins it immediately becomes a slideshow. Is this basically the story for everyone or is my connection the catalyst here?

I think it might be you. My games with you last night were boarding on unplayable. I think Bob was also in our game, but I haven't had any problems with him in the past (plus, he only lives a hundred miles from me). My game will Bill was really bad, too, and he's in SC.
When I (Illinois) was playing Evan (Oregon), Ceric (Tennessee) and Traag (Florida) the games played relatively smoothly.

I was trying to play with you last night S_B and the match was unplayable. Me and my fiancee were both in the match, so that might've been why the game lagged out. We aren't that far apart either which really makes no sense. I had nothing going on in my network, so the whole thing makes no sense.

Brawl is horrible online. I'll just go back to BWii.
I'd say BWii is an excellent example for online play because the game animates somewhat independently of the online transfer info, meaning it doesn't DELAY FRAMES. I know it's a very different kind of game, running only at 30fps, but it's great to feel YOU and YOUR squad move with the responsiveness of the offline game.
The real delay occurs in inflicted damage. I played with Deguello a few times, we're on opposite coasts, and it typically took up to a half-second to see enemy life meters deplete. I got to move fluidly, he seemed to move fluidly, and there's no ghosting or slowdown.

I never actually get delayed frames. I get slowdown where the whole game will just slow to a slideshow, but I never see players "teleporting" around the screen or delays in damage tallies.
The only thing I haven't tried, network wise, is to buy a new DSL modem, as the one I currently have is a Westell 6100, which is basically the bare-minimum for a DSL modem.
Then again, maybe it's just Brawl, since my GF and I can play in 32 person TF2 games with no issue and Strikers worked just fine as well.

I haven't seen the slowdown/slideshow effect yet. I just see the fight happen a second later than what's been input, but the framerate is still kept high.

I'm guessing this is just a side effect of being in NH.
It might not just be the fact that I'm so far away but that the network infrastructure in NH is likely severely worse than that of larger and more industrialized states.
I've been checking to see if Verizon will get off their asses and offer FIOS to my location but still no luck. I'm at the point where I'd probably be willing to pay for a fiber channel directly to my Wii if I thought it would help my connectivity.

It's not just you; I get the slideshow effect sometimes. But never as bad as when I play you.

Have we heard anything out of Nintendo about this?
I don't think I've seen any "official" statements from them saying that they acknowledge the problem and are working on fixing it. It seems like their stance on the subject might be "If we wait long enough, people will stop playing and the problem will solve itself."

Haven't I played againts you S_B? I remember thinking that I knew that you've been posting in the forums that you've been having lag problems with brawl, yet I was surprised on those lag free battles with you and someone else.

Really? I think you're the only one, and your connection shows red for me.
Also, I have a FLAWLESS connection to this guy in Maryland (for both of us, not just me). Figure THAT out...
My engineer roommate suggests that having the same PROVIDER could be key for lower latency matches.

UncleBob and a few others show up red to me, but I've had lag free matches with them. I don't know if they were getting the same lag free response though. Pale is the only one on my list that has a green status, but then again I think it's because we're quite close compared to the rest of most of you. I agree with your engineer roommate although it is a situation that really shouldn't be.

Do I show up as red to you?
I'm asking the guy from MD what provider he has. If he has Verizon, we may be onto something here.
