Title: Donkey Kong: Chimp or Chump?
Post by: EasyCure on February 27, 2008, 10:17:46 AM
The Star Fox thread, as well as the great DK tunes on the Brawl soundtrack, had me thinking:
Is there a way to revive the Donky Kong series to its former glory?
The original arcade game was a huge hit and pretty much made Nintendo back in the day, but the sequels didnt make as big of an impact. Flash forward to Donkey Kong Country and DK is back on top with the likes of Mario (ok maybe not THAT big). The 'Country' series still gets praised today for what it achieved in its day, and even though the graphics are a debate to some when compared to today, the gameplay is always mentioned as solid. Whether single player or Co-op, the game is just damn fun.
Then what happens after the SNES? Donkey Kong 64 comes out, and although good in the graphics dept. the gameplay was lacking. Everyone cited it as "another Rare collect-a-thon." You might of had some fun with the game, I know I did, but there's no denying that the collecting was tedious. As for the GC, we never got a proper Donkey Kong game. Jungle Beat was close but the use of the Bongo's turned some people off, and/or just made it inaccessable for some who didnt want to get an accessory to play the game (properly).
With all the spin-offs and "gimmicky" games DK has under his necktie, and with all his "whoring out" within the Mario Spin-offs (See: Mario Party series, Sports series), it makes one think that Nintendo doesn't really respect the character/IP as much as they should. But what else can they do with the big ape? If we were to see another DK game on wii, a proper DK game, what could be done to the series make it feel new and grander, something to make us Nintendo fans (and video game fans in general) take notice?
Or is it a lost cause..?

I thought DK Jungle Beat was an awesome game, one worthy of the DK name. Its main problem was that you needed the bongos to play, but even that added to the depth as I discovered when I saw S_B play it (he became obsessed with getting combos).
As for the franchise, I think Nintendo Tokyo should make a sequel to Jungle Beat. Since you already have the Wii and Nun-chuck they can go out there with innovation. Update the graphics, maybe add a little more to the story and levels, have some of the classic characters return (Diddy, Dixie and Cranky) and you would have a grand DK game.

correct me if im wrong but isnt jungle beat a side scrolling platformer? i'm not knocking it but to go from donkey kong country to donkey kong 64 and then to Jungle beat seems rather.. i dunno. i dont want to sound like im putting the game down or bashing it, cuz i've never played it. i wasnt interested in the quirky controls and most of the reviews stated the game was short (although it had good replay value). I'll be honest, i want to check it out now if i can find it since i do have a pair of bongos ($3!! SWEET) i got for donkey konga.
I just feel that Nintendo should try to make a huge game with DK and co. I wouldnt mind a traditional side-scroller with some crazy unique wii controls, but i dont know how they could make an "epic" side-scroller. I also dont want another donkey kong 64, a game that didnt feel like donkey kong, even if shooting a Coconut shotgun would be sweet with the wiimote lol.
I'm looking to you guys for an idea that could be the next great DK game, cuz im stumped

You simply can't go making threads like this if you haven't played Jungle Beat. It's essential.

Jungle Beat was phenomenal. It brought honor back to DK's necktie, unlike the franchise destruction brought upon by DK64.

It was a great game. Three people can't be wrong. Buy it used and love it like it was new.

Pro are you saying Rush is brilliant? or are you saying that the individual is brilliant? Cause if it is the latter, I agree. Community is very good, but very often sheepish and destructive.

Jungle Beat was okay. I got it for $15 brand new with the bongos so I guess I shouldn't complain. I played through the first few levels then got bored.

Somebody take thousands of points from this guy or at once! Or better yet, slap him with the ban stick!
Jungle Beat is the only must-buy game on the GameCube. No other game comes close as far as I'm concerned.

Donkey Kong made for some nice puzzle jump&runs on the handhelds.

I just started playing the Donkey Kong Countries on the VC because I never owned a Super Nintendo and I love them, and I really like DK: King of Swing and DK: Jungle Climber on the handhelds. My sister got Donkey Konga so the bongos are around here somewhere, I should see if I can find a used copy of Jungle Beat.
As for a new game, I don't know where to go with that. The DKC games, while great, didn't really have much in the way of a unique style that you could transfer into 3D, and I think that's why we're seeing these gimmick games with him. I think the easiest way to go would be to take a cue from Mario and either make something in the vein of Galaxy (more of the same, but when it's this same, I'm fine with that) or make something more like Mario 64 or Sunshine, kind of like DK64 with more of an emphasis on platforming and a hell of a lot less collecting, which could be good, especially for those people who weren't as big fans of the direction Nintendo took with Galaxy.

Ugh, gimmick? You're definitely talking about Jungle Beat aren't you? I am also 3000% positive you haven't played it.

I was referring to the bongo controls, and the nearly-exclusive use of the shoulder buttons in King of Swing and Jungle Climber. Those are gimmicks. I really enjoyed the shoulder button gimmick, and once I buy Jungle Beat like I said I intended to do, based on the love the game has here, I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it.

I'm sure there are several people defending Jungle Beat in this thread, but I haven't read any of the posts yet.
I just wanted to say that Jungle Beat is far and away better than any DK Country game, and is easily the best Donkey Kong game ever. It was the most pure fun game last generation.

the problem with a lot of these games is that they have survived several generations in several different formats. i hope i don't get struck by lightning by saying this but there may come a day when Mario gets old. but i think thats what has really happened to DK. any Nintendo team that has a really good idea on how to spruce up or evolve any of the big franchises is going to put that idea towards Mario, Luigi, Pokemon, etc, cause those are the big franchises.
DK may have to be relegated to 3rd tier status or just a secondary character in another game. i have no problem with DK i play with him in a lot of games. but i just don't see much interest from joe average.

Donkey Kong really just needs another adventure game. We have all the characters, it's ready to go, and we just need to make it. It hasn't StarFoxed us yet.

I'm actually surprised more people dont feel like mario's old or are sick of him considering how many spin offs there have been over the years compared to his main adventure titles. Nintendo knows how to work their little mascot though; sure they'll milk every penny out of it with all the spin-off titles but when it comes time for a real mario game, they make sure to get it right.
As for donkey kong, with all the praise Jungle Beat is getting, I really think i should give it a shot. Even if i love it though, it won't change the fact that I'll still feel like DK hasn't an adventure fitting of a new generation. DK64 under-delivered (in my opinion) in bringing DK into 3D, and the next DK adventure is a side-scroller that uses bongos. I'm not putting it down for that, but i know its what turned me off initially. I just wonder if DK is a type of game that'll work on a huge 3d scale, or if its better left 2d/side scrolling. With all these positive views of Jungle Beat, it makes me think it just might be better off not going into another 3D world.

We need a Donkey Kong Country 4. It needs to be in a 2D plane, that might move three dimensionally, but never gives you control of the 3rd dimension. This would be similar to Kirby 64 and Klonoa 2. I liked the DK 64 collect-a-thon because it felt essentially like another Banjo-Kazooie game, however, I definitely wouldn't want another incarnation in the same vein. Jungle Beat was a great game, but I would love to see some of those concepts rolled into a more traditional DK platformer. I can see a DKC/DKJB mash up of ideas making for an amazingly awesome game.
