I am surprised that with Nintendo's tendency of turning every single franchise into a portable game they have yet to make a SSB type game on the GBA or DS.
I'm sure the main complaint is that they can't get the engine to run properly in handheld form. The creators of Jump superstars did a good job of creating a SSB like fighting game. In fact, I would love to see its character assist engine used on a SSB game. The manga panel system looked complicated, but unique and deep. Think of it as Brawl's sticker power ups, but with a permanent effect on the characters.

I still want a "Super Sprite Bros." - Mix Shadow Battle from the GCN Four Swords Adventures with Smash Bros. A 2D, sprite based game where you just kick the crap out of the other players.

It was only recently that Mario Party made an appearance on a handheld for the first time. There probably will be a smash bros. on a Nintendo handheld eventually. Personally, I think the reason they haven't is because the DS doesn't have an analog stick. They could put it on the DS anyway in a watered down form, or maybe what they'll do is save the idea for their next handheld system, which actually couldn't be more than 2 years away.
Mark my words; there will be a DS successor within 2 years time, and Smash Bros. may even be a launch title for it.

Mario Party 1 was released in 1999 for the N64. The series first appeared in handheld form in 2003. 4 Years?
Smash Bros. '64 was released the same year as Mario Party 1.

It was looking good, but NOA decided they wouldn't have enough copies published, so it's been delayed indefinitely. Clearly you haven't been paying attention.
